The Nationals have added Chris Marrero, Adam Carr and Cole Kimball to their 40-man roster, protecting all three players from being plucked away in next month's Rule 5 draft. They have also lost pitcher Juan Jaime to the Diamondbacks on a waiver claim.
No other players were removed from the 40-man roster, which now has no open slots. If the Nats acquire any new players this offseason, they'll need to clear 40-man space for the additions.
Among the players who are now unprotected from the Rule 5 draft are pitchers
Brad Peacock and Brad Meyers. (UPDATE: I mistakenly had Peacock as one of the eligible Rule 5 players. Turns out he won't be eligible until next year because although he was drafted in 2006, he didn't actually sign until 2007.)

If they added 3 and took off just Jaime, don't they have 42 on a 40 man roster?
They were at 38 and removed Jaime. I think they got to 38 by removing Adam Dunn and Adam Kennedy.

Leaving Brad Meyers unprotected is really rolling the dice. The guy's a talent.
Keeping Wil N and Maxwell on the 40 man makes no sense at all......Rizzo has to be smarter than this right?
JayB, my thoughts exactly. Why take the chance with Brad Meyers?
They will have to make additional moves as they sign Free Agents so more moves will happen in the coming weeks on the 40 man.
In my opinion they had a better chance of putting Jaime in a trade than Wil Nieves or Justin Maxwell so I don't get the strategy of removing Jaime before Nieves and Maxwell.
I don't get leaving Peacock off. A power pitcher who throws 95mph in relief and who was doing great in the AFL is now not worthy of being protected? I'm sure he'll be picked up by another club.
You have to protect a player who is MLB ready like Jesus Flores was when the Nats got him from the Mets in Rule 5.
Here is the main parts of the criteria if a player is chosen in the Rule 5 draft, a player must be kept on the selecting team's 25-man Major League roster for the entire season after the draft. The player may not be optioned or designated to the Minors.
Rizzo must think Peacock is not MLB ready for another team's active 25 man roster.
Another year of Justin Maxwell? Another year of Ross F. Detwiler? Unbelievable. Somebody, please come and take these guys away.
Guys like Nieves and Maxwell will likely get waived when FAs are signed or trades are made, JayB. By saying that you would prefer that they be waived now in order to make room to protect more guys from the Rule 5 draft, what you're really saying is that you don't want to see any FAs signed or players obtained via trade. Because if they needed to move anyone they put on the 40-man roster now off the 40-man roster after that draft takes place, the only way they can do it is by waiving them - which likely means that the players would immediately be lost, because another team could then claim them without the requirement to keep them on their 25-man roster all season as would be necessary if they were claimed in the Rule 5 draft. Rizzo knows what he's doing, JayB. He's not the idiot - you are.
Well, thank goodness we protected Wil Nieves. His job in Syracuse is safe for sure now.
OK, so I mistakenly had Brad Peacock as one of the guys who needed to be protected from the Rule 5 this year. Turns out he won't need to be protected until next year because although he was drafted in 2006, he didn't actually sign until 2007.
As for all of you wondering why players like Wil Nieves and Justin Maxwell weren't dropped from the 40-man today, there was no real need to do that unless the Nats wanted to add another minor leaguer and protect him from the Rule 5. They can certainly remove Nieves, Maxwell or anyone else off the 40-man later this offseason, and they will have to remove several players eventually if they sign any free agents.
Didn't know Kimball and Carr were both rule 5 eligible, but great adds to the 40-man and I think both could be in the Nats bullpen next season or in 2012. You have to protect Marrero with the future uncertain at 1B. They could still add Meyers and others because they have more time, right?
Re: Brad Meyers
For those who are curious about why the Nats left Brad Meyers on the 40-Man Roster. He's been out with a foot problem/injury that's been bothering him for the better part of the last year and a half. That's the likely reason Meyers was left unprotected.
Great. I was starting to loss sleep over the prospects of losing Wil ".205" Nieves and Justin "O-for-4 with four strikeouts" Maxwell to the likes of Phillies, Braves, Giants et al.
Good. Now I can go to sleep in peace.
Rizzo, please pull off this Upton trade. A six-for-one special. Clear out some of these stiffs. Please.
I don't think six stiffs for Upton is going to get you very far.
•The Athletics, Indians, Royals and Tigers are the four clubs on Upton's no-trade list, tweets FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal. Upton can be dealt to any of the other 25 teams without his approval.
The scouting reports I saw on Brad Meyers said "limited upside" and backend of rotation at best. Don't think he throws very hard, so given injury history, will anyone commit a 25-man MLB roster spot for him in long relief for the whole season? If he threw bullets, then someone is probably going to take the chance, but this is not the case. Also, if he was healthy now, he would definitely be playing winter ball to get ready for 2011. The fact he isn't says something.
Anon @ 8:48, we know you are Mike Rizzo responding so don't try to justify it now! LOL
Damn, foiled again ...
Is there a widget that can post "No onr is going to trade Upton or anyone like him for a 300- loss team's castoffs. 'Justin Upton for any X-number of bags of balls' is never gonna happen, so quit asking."?

Is there a widget to post in response to sec3mysofa that says: "So, why did the Diamondbacks jump all over Tommy John's Juan Jaime? And how is that Bryce Harper and Steven Strasburg (when healthy) are the top two prospects in baseball if that is true? Why is that GM's around the league constantly inquire about Jordan Zimmermann?"
They aren't there yet farm system wise. But this ain't your daddies Jim Bowden directed Natinals anymore either.

Scottsdale lineup for AFL: Lombardozzi 6, Culberson 4, Belt 3, Norris 2, Krauss 7, Pacheco DH, Harper 9, Gillaspie 5, Blackmon 8; SP: Solis
Also is there a widget that could ask sec3mysofa the baseball genius bar why there are FIVE NATS PROSPECTS (out of a possible NINE) starting in the AFL playoff game? If they are only worth a "bag of balls"? Pray enlighten us?
Oops make that FOUR out of a possible NINE. My apologies, my bad.
