Purke optioned to Hagerstown

The Nationals optioned pitcher Matt Purke to low-Class A Hagerstown following today's game in Viera, a move that gives the left-hander a chance to continue his rehab from shoulder surgery in minor-league camp.

Purke, the organization's third-round pick in 2011, had surgery in August to clean up his shoulder and remove a couple of inflamed bursa sacs. He's currently restricted to two bullpen sessions per week, each thrown at 50 percent velocity, but he expects to ramp up his workload soon.

The Nationals plan for Purke -- who received a four-year, $4.15 million, big-league contract after he was drafted out of TCU -- to remain in Viera at extended spring training and then join the roster at Hagerstown in May or June. He'll be limited to 100 innings this season.

Purke's demotion today leaves 49 players in big-league camp, with 27 days still remaining until the Nationals' season opener against the Marlins.

Will they wait until after the WBC to cut things down? Jason Marquis pitching on tv right now. Former nats all over the place today.

Guess they're bringing him back as easy as possible. Should be less stress at Hagerstown. Once he's completely healthy, then maybe he'll get back on the fast track.

Sonny,

With Purke it's all about staying healthy. You are right that he should dominate at this level and should be up to AA in short order.

Texeira out of the WBC- think they call Adam? Think he would bring Drake?

I look forward to spring training 2015, when the Nats start their quest for a threepeat and young Matt Purke is in a spirited battle with even younger Lucas Giolito for the No. 5 spot in the best rotation in baseball, and maybe in MLB history.

I still think that in the picture Purke is a dead ringer for Ferris's pal Cameron.

222, wouldn't that be awesome if our pitching rotation was named the best in MLB history. Hope the Lerners pay Rizzo enough to keep him happy in Washington.

I really do hope Purke works out. Beyond developing into a good pitcher that can help the Nats, he has kind of a uniqueness and style than could prove to be endearing to fans (kind of like Morse and his "take me on" song, his "cobra" warm up routine and helmet slap) with his shades and the way he sprints to the dugout after the completion of an inning.

here is the link you requested, FS. I would love to be able to do this for the 2012 Nats but I don't know where to get all the dats.

Wow! 28 hits for the Dominican Republic team against the Phillies! I'm with you, NatsLady in that any bad outing for Cole is good!

This Dan Haren, he's funny guy.

“In spring training, if you do good, you feel great. If you do bad, you’re just working on stuff,” Haren said. “I was just working on things in the third inning, you know.”

Well, we got about a quarter inch of wet snow on the ground already here in Reston.

Does not look much from my DC window. but I am not complaining since I have a day off. More time for Nats reading and baseball stuff.

We have a couple of inches in my neighborhood, and it's snowing now.

Totally sloppy, slushy stuff in Prince William - piling up, though. Lots of WBC and spring training games to watch. Stay warm, stay safe. Let's chat about the Nats - we never run out of stuff to talk about.

I'd totally watch them, if I didn't have work to do. That's how it goes when you have a home-based office. ;-)
