Updates on Storen, Rendon, Goodwin

His right arm in a sling following the first surgery of his life, Drew Storen sat in the dugout at Nationals Park this morning and expressed relief that yesterday's procedure to remove a small bone chip from his elbow was relatively minor.

"When I woke up and they said that it was quick, it was easy, it was what we expected ... obviously that's a big relief," Storen said. "Now I have a good plan of attack. I know what the problem was; I had it fixed."

The arthroscopic surgery performed by team doctor Wiemi Douoguih removed one small bone chip from Storen's throwing elbow. The right-hander's ulnar collateral ligament was found to be entirely intact, and there were no other areas of concern.

Doctors didn't give Storen an exact timetable for his return, but he's proceeding as though he'll miss at least two months. No matter when he takes the mound again, the 24-year-old expects to be 100 percent.

"That's my goal," he said. "When I come back, I want to be me. ... I want to be like I was last year."

Though an enhanced MRI last month revealed the likelihood of the bone chip, Storen stood by his and the Nationals' decision to attempt to return following a brief period of rest. His hope was to manage the pain all season and then have it taken care of during the offseason.

"I thought we did the right thing in our approach," he said. "I didn't feel the pain when I came back initially. I think it was the right thing to do, just trying to throw through it. I didn't think it was going to be anything that severe. But I definitely did the right thing in not trying to throw another bullpen or something like that after I felt it. I shut it down right away, and that was the best decision I made."

Some other injury updates...

-- Center fielder Rick Ankiel is scheduled to finish his rehab assignment at Class AAA Syracuse tonight. Ankiel will then return to D.C. and work out at Nationals Park tomorrow and come off the DL once he becomes eligible before Saturday's game.

-- A follow-up exam on top draft pick Anthony Rendon revealed a partial fracture of his left ankle. The Nationals actually believe that's a slightly better outcome than the original diagnosis of a bad sprain, because a fracture can heal faster and cleaner. The 2011 first-round pick is scheduled to see a foot specialist tomorrow. There's no timetable for his return, but GM Mike Rizzo said he is expected to play this season.

-- Fellow 2011 draft pick Brian Goodwin has a strained hamstring, but the injury is not considered serious.

Rendon's injury is a bit disconcerting ... Nick "the stick" Johnson redux? Hopefully he gets in with the other Nats and does the gym rat thing to compensate.

Tendon damage and fracture to the right ankle and now the left-ankle? How do you address something like that, as Rizzo says? My off the cuff guess would be in the weight room to build bone and muscle mass down there ...

Maybe AR winds up at 1B, after all... Brace up those ankles, and sacrifice a little speed and agility, to get that beautiful bat into the lineup...?

I think it's a relief that the Dr. has actually seen inside Drew's elbow and knows for sure that he has no ulnar ligament damage. That must be a very nice thing for Drew to know.

Drew, if we are in first place when you are ready to come back.....take another month off! You can be good and ready for the playoffs!!!! (I know folks...consider other pitchers, etc., etc...take it easy) GO NATIONALS!!

Uh-huh. That's the way it always starts. Three weeks later, they're talking DL...

"Not considered serious" is becoming famous last words.

Bubble wrap can be sent to Mr Rendon! I have plenty! It will be good to see the Arm back. Shark has looked a little lost at the plate.

Is it weird that no one knows what is wrong with Morse and why its taking so long? It's good to know Storen was in the dugout today. I was imagining him at home, watching on TV. It made me unhappy.

Is it likely that the Nats KNOW what is wrong with Morse and they just aren't saying? Or is it possible that they DON'T know? I hope it's the former situation.

As someone who witnessed Rendon's injury in Lynchburg on Saturday night, I'm curious: Did he slip and fall because he had injured his ankle? Or did he injure his ankle because he slipped and fell? I realize it doesn't matter -- the result is the same -- but I am curious. He did seem to take a wide turn at third, but no wider than I've seen others take. At the time, it just looked like he had lost his balance.

In happier news from that game, I can belatedly report that Potomac Nationals right fielder Randolph Obuder made two spectacular diving catches to rob hits. I was sitting behind a group of boisterous and rowdy Lynchburg fans -- the type who jangled their keys whenever Potomac Nationals outfielder Kevin Keyes came to bat -- but even they acknowledged Obuder's fielding and gave him a loud and what seemed genuine round of applause as he jogged back to the dugout after his second diving catch.

Good to see esteemed Virginia political reporter Dwayne Yancey in the house. In 1988 he wrote an acclaimed book on the rise of Doug Wilder.

Drew -- thanks for the kind words. Yes, that's me. In baseball parlance, I've moved up to the front office; I'm an editor now. On the side, I write plays, including some about baseball. You can click on the link for details. I've been a regular here for some time, as a reader, but haven't posted because I haven't had anything original to contribute until I witnessed Rendon's unfortunate injury. My "hometown" team is the Salem Red Sox, also in the Carolina League, so I get to see the Potomac Nationals several times each summer. I don't claim to be a baseball expert but if folks want my impressions, I can share them. Their first visit here is May 8-10 but those are weekdays and might conflict with my son's baseball schedule; otherwise, i'll be late June before I see them again.

Get well drew! I'm happy to see Ankiel return. Sounds like he is stroking the ball. I assume moving Brett carroll is the move they will make?
