Rendon suffers apparent leg injury

US Presswire file photo
Top draft pick Anthony Rendon injured himself running the bases tonight.
CHICAGO -- Anthony Rendon, the Nationals' top pick in last summer's draft, suffered an apparent left leg injury tonight while rounding third base during high-Class A Potomac's game at Lynchburg.

Rendon had doubled in the top of the fourth inning and was trying to score on Justin Bloxom's subsequent base hit to center field when he slipped coming around third base and fell to the ground, according to eyewitnesses.

The 21-year-old third baseman lay motionless for several minutes before he was helped off the field, his left leg kept off the ground the entire time with no weight being put on it.

The severity of the injury is not yet known. Nationals officials did not return messages late Saturday night.

Rendon, the sixth overall pick in the country, saw his amateur career sidetracked multiple times by injuries. He fractured his right ankle while playing in 2010 for Team USA in international competition, and he was unable to play in the field for most of last season due to a right shoulder strain.

I was there....it looked pretty bad. As he never attempted to even get back to third after going down. He just laid motionless for several minutes. The double was a rocket off the CF wall.

Hope young Rendon is OK. He has been hitting lights out in Potomac, and has terrific potential as a future Nat. Nice kid, too, by all accounts.

Mark, posts like the ones above by Anonymous 11:37 are a blight to the great blog that you provide for us. The troll is just a vexation to the spirit for the rest of us. A curse on his hemorrhoids, I say!

Oh, dear. Good luck to the kid and hope it's not too bad.

And I'm not fond of ad hominem posts either.

Joe Seamhead said...

I'm sure hoping that young Mr. Rendon is not as seriously hurt that it sounds like he could be from the scary reports we've heard so far.

I had to look up "ad hominem" Natsfan1a. Nothing like a shot of vocabulary expansion with my morning coffee!

I hope the kid is okay.

He sure seems to get injured easily. I hope he's okay and it's just a high sprain.

Thanks to natsfan1a I just learned about "logical fallacy" - now back to baseball. Hope Rendon is only out for a brief time.

You're welcome, sjm. Returning the favor as I learn things from your posts, too. Next up, hyperlinks. :-)

I'll admit to being concerned about young Mr. Rendon (particularly given his history), but I've had difficulty projecting him into our lineup, in the next couple of years anyway. I'm saying a prayer for his health, and development, and leaving him out of my mental plans, until such time as he is called up, then it'll be SUCH a sweet bonus!!!

sjm308 said...

If what NatsJack and others say is right (and I believe they have good instincts), this kid is our next superstar after Harper. Have to hope his health does not become an issue.

If its an ACL, get it operated on quickly and be ready to go for next spring.

Amanda is reporting it's the left Ankle, but no other details provided.

sjm308 said...

I think all his other leg injuries were to the other leg/ankle.

A story, regarding negative folks.

About ten years ago, I was a limo driver, working out of west central New Jersey. Almost all the work was sedan rides to and from the NYC airports. Executives returning from Europe occasionally arrived at JFK, which was often 90+ minnits from home, the last leg of a long and exhausting travel day.

One time, I picked up a grumpy fellow, whom I obviously wouldn't be chatting with, during the long drive. After I pulled away from a toll booth, having briefly exchanged pleasantries with the collector, my fare volunteered that, toll collectors were a cranky bunch, and that effort expended toward being nice to them, was wasted. I politely disagreed, and the car fell silent, once again.

A short time later, we passed an exit with a line of vehicles at least 1/2 mile long. As if to prove his point, he excitedly pointed at a car, butting it's way into the front of the line. "See...people are just impatient and self-interested!". My reply was that he and I saw different outcomes, in the scenario: where he saw, in the hurried driver, evidence of his fellow man's disregard for one another, I saw 30-40+ drivers waiting their turn, forming a microcosm of a polite society.... "We've got y'all handily out-numbered!", I cheerfully chided him. He admitted that I made a point he hadn't considered, but the rest of the ride was as quiet as ever, though I got a nice tip...

It's much the same with our little community, here. Though we can all get a little out of sorts when The Boys are losing (especially if "the usual suspects" are letting us down), it's a very small minority who accept defeat in the third inning, or harp, relentlessly on their pet goats. The rest of us remain grateful for the continuing improvement, and the high character of Our Heroes, following the lead of 1A, and so many others, who CHOOSE to enjoy the experience.

At least, presumably, when we win it all, there'll be a week or so of unanimous Good Will, before the clouds of doom begin to gather for the next season ;-)

Remember, posiposters; There's lots more of us.... Let's just enjoy the ride!

I feel really bad for this kid. By most accounts, he is a humble kid who works hard and has tremendous ability. Even if this one isn't serious, it has to weigh on his mind.

Hopefully he is able to get back on the field and have a long, healthy career.

It is quite obvious that Rendon has a Nick Johnson body, which is exactly why so many teams passed him up in the draft.

Happy Easter, Passover and whatever else anybody is celebrating. Thanks UnkyD, great story. Here's a bit of sunshine from Sunshine: Long-range weather forecast for Thursday's opener: sunny, breezy, high low 60s. I'll take it. Going with my best friend (a Phillies Phan, no less) on Thursday and Wanda the-mother-in-law on Saturday. She's 83 and can outwalk most of us from the Navy Yard subway. I can barely keep up with her, and I'm fit.

In the immortal words of MichelleS: "WOO-HOO!!"

Let's go for 3-0, Boys!

For anyone there last night, did this look like it could have been caused by the field? I know in years past the Nats have complained about the poor condition of the field and the potential for potholes and poorly maintained grounds to cause injuries. I heard they had made improvements, so I hope that the field isn't the cause...

Great story and love the sentiment you express UnKyd. Our Easter Sermon has been delivered.

I am speaking a bit as an outsider here, in that I haven't played baseball since grade school--play basketball every day at 59--but don't know the deep seated ins and outs of stats or arm motions. Don't know how pitches move, and last summer when I stood behind the backstop in Orleans watching and hearing the ball smack leather, couldn't really tell the difference between the pitches, yet the 27 year old announcers at the table next to me were calling each one.

But I really do learn a lot from this blog and enjoy it immensely. For which I am very grateful. Personally I love to watch how people who know what they are doing build teams. That's what speaks to me, and so instead of WHIPs, which I do appreciate, I also love the intuition of team building team chemistry and which positions I feel Rizzo and Davey have locked into. For instance Rendon really does "feel" like the real thing--but he'll probably get hurt a lot like Griffey--or Grant Hill in basketball--that seems to be who he is. I hope for the best with his injury, as most all of us do, and feel for the despair he's probably feeling right now. I hope he makes it big.

But back to UnKyD's words--you don't need to be a baseball guru with facts and figures to know where a lot of the Anons are coming from--not all of them, b/c some are very cool and like Durbin's Dad had good reason to be Anon--but for the negative Anons, they're in a place best left in our dust. My experience with those who are quick to judge, and judge harshly, and relentlessly, usually speak from a feeling of inadequacy in themselves. And they project this venomously on others instead of taking care of their own stuff. And what can you ever tell any of this sort, when the light has to come on from inside them. So I don't even gloss over all Anons, b/c maybe we got one of the good ones saying something, but as soon as I start to experience that feeling of my heart and chest being strangled by vines, I move on to UnKyd, or NJ, or Nats Lady, or SJM--really most all the rest of you--and I left a ton of your handles out even on this page cause on this subject I know you all know what I'm saying. Great Blog Mark, and keep on keepin on. And thanks to all of you who are turning me on to all this baseball knowledge. GYFNG

Thanks, UnkyD, great story.

Sure hope Rendon will be healthy and injury free to fulfill his potential with us. He sure seems to be snake bitten, but I'm sure there must be some examples of players with a string of injuries that go on to have a productive carear. I will choose this to be the case for Rendon. Good luck kid.

Since it was a road game, I doubt the field conditions at the Pfitz were at all an issue.

It's a shame we have a mean-spirited rant and a looong, gooey post to detract from Mark's post about the injury to Anthony Rendon. Let's all hope it's not serious.
I for one wish nothing but the best for this fine young man.

Great post UnkyD!!! I am fairly new to this site and have always been a bit on the pessimistic side of things, so I agree that being positive and believing in the team/management makes the ride worth when they win. For me it is a process and something I am constantly working on as a fan. When you have spent thousands and thousands of dollars on your favorite teams over the years and realize that professional sports has become nothing but a business, you get to the point where you expect results like you would after buying a new car or a new TV. Other than the Redskins (and that was over 20 years ago now), I have not seen a championship from any of my teams-147 cumulative seasons, and for the most part have seen nothing but losing season after losing season or first round playoff exits after winning the President's Trophy. So paying $6.00 for a hot dog and $30.00 for parking makes it easy to get frustrated when Werth goes 0-4 with a hat trick and really looks like he could care less. I am sure he cares a lot, but I often get the feeling that the fans care more than some of the players. Gary Clark and Larry Bird were 2 of my favorite players ever and you never had to question whether they cared. Clark was on the radio venting his frustration about watching the Redskin players joking around 5 seconds after a loss with the visiting team and just couldn't believe it. He wouldn't eat or sleep, talk to his parents on the phone or be seen in public following a loss. That is the kind of passion that fans love!!! Anyways, whenever I go to the dark side on this blog, feel free to slap me on the wrist. Stakes have now been raised for the Nats and it is nice to watch meaningful baseball for the first time in Washington. Go Nats!!!

UNkyD & realdeal - best part of this Sunday (besides my 15 mile bike ride) was coming back and reading your posts - thanks to both.

when I was coaching I had the maintenance staff paint in huge 10 foot letters "PMA" up on our pool wall. It stood for Positive Mental Attitude and I preached daily about feeling good about yourself and your work ethic and achieving your goals. Garbage in = garbage out and those that did not believe in what they were doing routinely failed (this is another reason people don't understand Bryce Harper, he truly believes he will be great). I think that a big part of our neganon community, not all of them, but most just don't have a positive attitude and I am betting it goes way beyond the simple game of baseball.

That's it for me folks, on to a great family dinner and baseball in the other room.

Go Nats

Aw, heck, I'm sorry that I even acknowledged the neg-anon, and yes UnkyD has done us a good turn with his post. I couldn't sleep last night and at 3:23 a.m. I got up grumpy and let his post get the best of me. I get pretty defensive about the Nats. My bad.

Erik: I might not agree with you on lots of issues, but you have passion and also the courage to put a name on your posts. We will never know who "erik" is but at least we can respond. I won't slap your wrist but try this. Just enjoy the game, the way it is played, the strategy, the athleticism, and the fact its been played this way for over a century. When we win great but I guarantee that even in a loss you will see a minimum of three great plays that will make you wonder how the hell did they do that?

Thanks again to all

Go Nats!!

Did the "mean-spirited rant" get deleted? I don't see one.

The transition from Field of Dreams to Just a Business was always in our own perceptions. Does anyone seriously believe Charles Comiskey was in it for the giggles?

"Of course it's all in your head! Why should that mean it isn't real?"

Arlington BigFish said...

ehay: "He sure seems to get injured easily." I immediately thought of Nick Johnson, who has the added distinction of being a slow healer.

Then along comes Anon @ 10:22: "It is quite obvious that Rendon has a Nick Johnson body...."

Don't know about obvious, but something to look out for

But then..."... which is exactly why so many teams passed him up in the draft." Er, didn't we pick him @ #5? So many = 4?

Soul Possession, PFB Sofa said...

#6, IIRC. The baseball media did say he dropped to the Nats because of his shoulder injury, but then, for everybody who gets drafted Not-First, it is for some reason or other, and plenty of really good players get passed up multiple times by the whole league.
