Instant analysis: Nats 2, Reds 1

US Presswire photo
Jordan Zimmermann was great again, but again got no run support.
Game in a nutshell: Jordan Zimmermann pitched brilliantly (again) and got no run support (again). Stymied for 7 1/3 innings by Reds right-hander Bronson Arroyo, the Nationals finally got on the board when pinch-hitter Xavier Nady delivered a solo homer off reliever Bill Bray in the bottom of the eighth. The Nats bullpen then kept this one going long enough for Jayson Werth to deliver the game-winner: a bases-loaded single up the middle in the bottom of the 13th.

Hitting highlight: There weren't many to choose from, but the one that kept the Nats alive gets the prize. With his team trailing 1-0 in the eighth and unable to do anything at the plate, Davey Johnson countered Dusty Baker's decision to summon lefty Bray from the bullpen by sending up Nady to pinch-hit for pinch-hitter Chad Tracy. Brilliant move, because Nady delivered the game-tying home run into the left-field bullpen.

Pitching highlight: What else can be said about Zimmermann? He pitches great, even if he never gets any run support. The right-hander duplicated his pitching line from his first start of the season, allowing one earned run over seven innings. Zimmermann now has a 1.29 ERA for the season ... and zero wins.

Key stat: Nationals pinch-hitters totaled 14 RBI all of last season. Through only eight games this year, they already have four RBI.

Up next: The home-opening series continues tomorrow at 4:05 p.m. when Edwin Jackson goes up against the unfortunately named Homer Bailey.

Well Mark, you had plenty of time to get this draft ready :)
At this rate Zimmermann will finish the season with a 3.0 era, 24 starts and 2 wins...

That was totally Werth staying awake for, which I did, mostly. Good on you fans who were there and stayed 'til the end, like Jayson said.

Let's hope he gets to 33 starts ... that's 200 innings ... they know that and the number of quality starts to preserve the bullpen are what counts. Its Strasburg's goal as well ... albeit not this year. 24 starts is about what you can expect from Stras with the innings limit ... maybe a few less.

Craig Stammen - MVP?

JaneB said...

Craig's pitching is really great to see. But I am glad Jayson Werth is stepping back into himself.

Can you imagine what this team could be like the second half with Morse, Storen and Harper?

2-1

baseballswami said...

Even though our hitting is terrible - how about that goon squad?

MicheleS said...

Can't wait for Tomorrow! I will be in the park, Sec 131.

Carroll dfa - no surprise there.

I am not ashamed to say I left early. If it was a great pitcher shutting us out, I can understand. But Arroyo, come on. anyways that was not the main reason. it got a little too chilly for me to handle.

natsfan1a said...

I'll be there, too, but in my usual upper deckian spot. Can't wait either. If a bench guy scores a run, I'm going to try to start a Goon Squad chant. :-)

Confidential to Dave: Please stick around. We'd miss you otherwise.

natsfan1a said...

Thanks, MicheleS, for keeping us in mind re. the Carmen Miranda Memorial Home Run Sculpture premiere. :-)

Stammen for Cy Young! Goon squad for MVP.

Winning sure is fun!

Who needs hitting when we have this pitching staff.

Ankiel will help a little. He look good in Spring training.

Please remember these last two games when Craig Stammen finally gives up a run that you don't want to send him down.

1a.. I am not sure I want to see that thing go off, it only goes off is the Marlins hit a homer.

Dave,

We all know you're reading this so you may as well post, nobody actually thinks you "left." Did you get the attention you wanted? HA!

natsfan1a said...

I know. I only want to see it go off so I can mock it. Then I want the umps to reverse the call. Yeah, that'll work. :-)

baseballswami said...

Have the Marlins had the occasion to set it off yet? It looks like it belongs in vegas. And - I just realized that we have won our first 3 series. That is very cool.

Who goes to make room for Ankiel was a big topic of discussion in our section yesterday.... My guess is that it's probably Carroll who's the first of the goon squad to be let go. Why would Davey be starting Bernadina now, only to release him when Ankiel comes back? Same with Nagy. They'll survive until Morse is ready and forces another choice.

Carroll was DFA'd and Ankiel was reactivated for tomorrow's game. I could say, "called it!", but even a stopped clock is right twice a day!

The pitching is fabulous.

Managerial highlight: Davey moves above .500 as the Nats' skipper -- 40-43 followed by 6-2.

The Fox said...

baseballswami we have a 4 game series against the Reds.

Don't count your chickens the Baseball gods don't like that.

Ejax need to pitch deep into tomorrows game.

Cwj said...

Another awesome win (aren't they all? :-)
The offense continues to do enough to support the absolutely stellar pitching.
Through 8 games, the Nats pitching has been nothing short of amazing.

Good night :-)

For those dogging on the Nats hitting, just remember that the Reds only have ten hits and three runs scored in 22 innings in this series. And the hit total would be even lower without some generous homer scoring for Ryan yesterday.

And as for the idea that JZimm might only win 2 games this year, if he did, but the team were to go, say 21-12 in his starts, who really cares?

Will finally post now, just a tad superstitious and I didn't want to jinx the lads but what a bullpen!! and two great games!

Looked at the last set of posts and it got a little testy in here. I have changed my mind, I want the one pompous anon to stay an anon because I don't really even want to figure out who or what you are.I do know that you don't give a damn about our boys but are very concerned about being proved right in every prediction you make. So sorry that Jayson had to mess you up today and win the game for us. You are as much a fan of the nationals as the cartoon oriole bird. What you appear to be is a fan of yourself. Probably a fan club of one.

Go ahead, give me your best shot, get all bold or nasty but our lads are 6-2, I am happy and going to bed so I won't be able to read your idiotic posts.

Like natsfan1a I am hoping Dave returns as well. god forbid anyone argues with neganon on here.

This was real baseball ... finally with a team and a manager capable of holding their own against any other team in baseball. Its a small sample size but this team appears able to hold its own and it starts with the most important part: pitching, pitching, and more pitching.

It was a great game ... and Dusty tried everything to win it ... of course poor old ex-Nat farm hand Bill Bray might be the scape goat DFA ...

Didn't realize this was a four game series!

And you're a pompous old man who shouldn't type. You are another sanctimonious hypocrite ... but I am a bigger fan than you. I follow players all the way from the minors to the majors and have since 2005. And yeah it can make me a tad arrogant ... because I do know a lot more than you numb nuts. Its because I am a true fan and follow the game. Similar things have been said about manager Davey Johnson ... so I suppose I should feel complimented. At least I understand statistics and how they are used as he apparently does ...

And I don't want to know you either ... as far as I'm concerned you can take a leap into the murky depths of the Inner Harbor with the Oriole fans or the Anacostia ...

The mothers of cretins and idiots are always pregnant I see. How sad.

I thought Werth was nice to acknowledge the crowd, Zimmermann, and the bench in his post game comments. We have not seen enough of the celebratory Werth since he came on board. I hope to see a lot more of him this year and beyond.

Also enjoyed hearing Nady interviewed after the game - well spoken and engaging.

And while I'm handing out my "I Like Awards", I really like the way Stammen is pitching. He really does look dominate. (I wonder if now that Livo is gone, is Stammen the pitcher most likely to be called on to pinch hit in an emergency? I remember he has some skills.)

Swami- Same here. I figured 3 game series this early. But not only that, Houston will be visiting for 4 games as well next week.

Come on guys it's pretty silly to exchange insults on NI.
The Nats are 6-2!! :-)

I never start it ... but I was taught to finish it ... your proselytizing smacks of belligerence which I won't tolerate ... not from you or Dave. Dave started it with his constant very personal attacks on anonymous posters. And believe me not all were me. He had to pile on after Mark berated one poster. I think Mark can take care of himself. When Dave voiced his nasty personal affronts they were pointed at me not at the real poster.

I hate hypocrites who sanctimoniously pass judgement on others ... and I'm afraid my rapier is sharp and quick ... and now you are a target as well. I suggest you back off ...

So against a right-hander and with ANkiel in center will we see Bernadina in left tomorrow ... er today?

As SJM 308 pointed out I am often right ... I was right about Lannan and about Morse well before any beat writer or fan ... yep I actually am smart. No brag just fact. Sorry to disappoint you.

i noticed that werth's walkoff hit tonight was very similar to his hit at the end of the game yesterday. kinda poked a breaking ball dropping down on the front of the plate.

Just got home from the game and uploaded the walk-off video http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=KUAj2GGH-WY

Fun game and interesting moves by Dusty Baker. Davey Johnson was playing chess again.

I called into the post-game show on the Dave Jaegler/Mike Wallace discussion on Cosart replacing Willie Harris "the switch-hitter" so Cosart could bunt. I said to Mike Wallace, "When did Willie become a switch-hitter?"
