Game 21: Nats at Dodgers

Photo by Mark Zuckerman / NATS INSIDER
Stephen Strasburg and Bryce Harper are both in the lineup tonight at Dodger Stadium.
LOS ANGELES -- In the ideal world, Bryce Harper would have made his major-league debut in Washington, in front of a stadium packed with Nationals fans. But if the 19-year-old had to be unveiled on the road, this might be as good a scenario as you could have drawn up.

Iconic Dodger Stadium on a Saturday night, just a short drive from Harper's hometown of Las Vegas. Stephen Strasburg, a Southern California boy himself, on the mound. And a couple of first-place clubs going head-to-head in a truly meaningful ballgame. Not bad, not bad at all.

Harper, as promised, will bat seventh and play left field. At 19 years, 195 days, he's the youngest major leaguer since Mariners ace Felix Hernandez made his debut in 2005 at 19 years, 123 days. I don't imagine King Felix's unveiling was as big a deal at the time.

As you can see from the photo credit above, I'm coming at you live from Chavez Ravine. Plenty of updates to come before, during and after this historic game, so please check back often...

8:17 p.m. -- A few pregame scenes to share ... There is quite a large media horde here tonight for Harperpalooza. I'd estimate there were 40 reporters and photographers who surrounding Harper in the dugout for his pregame interview session. The kid said all the right things -- "It's always an exciting time to be able to come out here and play the game I love," "I'm just going to try to come out here and play the same game I've been playing every day" -- but did insist he's not nervous and that he slept well last night after arriving at 1 a.m. from Syracuse. ... Harper will have plenty of supporters in the stands tonight, with at least 29 friends and family members planning to attend. That group includes his father, mother and sister, but not his brother Bryan (a Nats farmhand who is currently playing at extended spring training in Viera). ... Harper, to the surprise of no one, put on one of his traditional jaw-dropping shows during batting practice, launching several balls well over the fence. The kid does know how to wow people in the cage.

8:25 p.m. -- Several members of Nats ownership are here tonight, including Mark Lerner, Ted Lerner, Annette Lerner and Alan Gottlieb, though all were planning to make this trip before they knew Harper would be called up. One key front office member who's not here, though, is Mike Rizzo. Why isn't the GM here to see his two No. 1 draft picks on the field together for the first time? He unfortunately had a prior engagement that he couldn't get out of ... the White House Correspondents Dinner. Seriously, he's a guest there. I imagine while everyone else in the room is laughing at all of the President's jokes, Rizzo will be busy checking his phone for updates from L.A.

8:28 p.m. -- One non-Harper update to share: Chad Tracy, who took a fastball off his wrist last night and appeared to be in serious pain at the time, might actually be available to pinch-hit tonight, according to Davey Johnson. X-rays came back negative, so it looks like Tracy really dodged a bullet there.

8:50 p.m. -- One more non-Harper news item: Chien-Ming Wang made his first rehab start tonight for Class A Potomac. His line: 4 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, 49 pitches (31 strikes).

9:11 p.m. -- And we're underway on a perfect night for baseball. Chad Billingsley starts off Ian Desmond -- who got to play catch with Maury Willis a few minutes ago, a thrill I'm sure for Ian -- with a fastball ... and Desmond pops it up for the first out of the night.

9:16 p.m. -- Jayson Werth delivered a two-out single to right-center, but that was it for the Nats in the top of the first. Stephen Strasburg takes the mound, and Bryce Harper (rocking the old-school stirrups) takes his position in left field to what sounds like some boos from the bleacher bums.

9:24 p.m. -- Not a bad bottom of the first for Strasburg. He threw three fastballs that registered 100 mph on the stadium gun (though the official MLB Pitch F/X reading for all was a mere 98). More impressively, he got Matt Kemp to ground into a 5-4-3 double play to end the inning. Great turn by Danny Espinosa to make it all possible. We go to the second, and Bryce Harper is due up third.

9:32 p.m. -- With two outs and nobody on in the top of the second, and with his parents (and Scott Boras) watching from the front row, Bryce Harper stepped to the plate for the first at-bat of his career, drawing some resounding boos from the crowd. He showed a good eye, taking a couple of fastballs from Chad Billingsley for balls, but then bounced a comebacker to the mound on a 2-1 changeup. So there you have it. Harper is officially 0-for-1 as a big leaguer. What a bust. Scoreless here as we go to the bottom of the second.

9:42 p.m. -- Well that was a rarity indeed: Strasburg plunked Juan Uribe, only the second batter he's ever hit among the 753 he's faced in his big-league career. No worries, because Strasburg came back with a nasty curveball to A.J. Ellis to end the second inning. Still scoreless. Strasburg has thrown 30 pitches (18 strikes).

9:50 p.m. -- Wow, what a play from old pal Jerry Hairston, making a diving catch of Desmond's soft liner to shallow right. Turned it into an inning-ending double play. That guy does it all, a real pro. Still 0-0 as we go to the bottom of the third.

9:59 p.m. -- Whoa, near disaster in the bottom of the third as Gwynn sends a pop-up into no-man's land, leading to a near three-way collision between Harper, Ankiel and Desmond. Luckily nobody made contact with anybody else, though the ball did fall in for a cheap single. Strasburg, though, came up big against Kemp once again, striking out the hottest hitter on the planet with a fastball on the outside corner. This game is living up to the billing so far, scoreless after three.

10:18 p.m. -- Sorry for the delay in updates there. I was catching up with an old friend: Chad Cordero. Yes, the Chief is here tonight, and he looks great. Has lost a ton of weight, and he would like to attempt a comeback next season. He'll also be in D.C. this summer and is scheduled to be at Nationals Park on July 20. Nothing official yet, but sounds like he'll throw out the ceremonial first pitch that night.

10:23 p.m. -- Meanwhile, Harper came up for his second at-bat, with at least two beach balls bouncing around the stands here at iconic Dodger Stadium. No wave, thank god. Harper smoked Billingsley's first-pitch changeup, but was way out in front of it and sent the ball into the first-base stands. He wound up lofting a little looper to shallow left field, caught by Gwynn. So the kid is 0-for-2. This game remains scoreless as Strasburg takes the mound for the bottom of the fifth.

10:32 p.m. -- Whether there was a 19-year-old in left field or not, this has been a whale of a ballgame so far. Strasburg and Billingsley are just dealing. Strasburg has six strikeouts through five, and he's made a couple of great plays on line-drive comebackers. This is probably the first time in a long time he's appeared in a game and not been the featured attraction. But right now, he deserves to be. 0-0 as we go to the sixth.

10:39 p.m. -- True fact: Strasburg has more hits tonight than Harper. Not only that, the pitcher roped his first career double, a line drive to right-center to lead off the sixth. Unfortunately, Strasburg's teammates couldn't drive him in. Desmond and Lombardozzi each grounded to first, then Werth grounded to third. This Nats lineup is lacking a bit in firepower. If only they had a top prospect at Class AAA waiting to be summoned to save the day. Oh well.

10:47 p.m. -- Two more strikeouts for Strasburg in the sixth, including another one of Kemp. He got the MVP hopeful swinging helplessly at a 99 mph high fastball. I'll tell you what, this is rivaling any of Strasburg's previous 21 starts in the big leagues. He's been in complete control tonight, and completely dominating the Dodgers through six scoreless innings.

10:50 p.m. -- Adam LaRoche to the rescue! Line-drive homer down the right-field line to lead off the seventh. His fourth of the season puts the Nats up 1-0. Seriously, where would these guys be without LaRoche so far this season?

10:56 p.m. -- There it is! Bryce Harper's first career hit is a double to the base of the center-field fence. He smoked that one, at the end of a really nice at-bat against Billingsley. Took a couple of close two-strike pitches to work the count full, then crushed that 3-2 pitch to center. Nicely done, kid.

11:15 p.m. -- Well, that was quite an interesting bottom of the seventh, wasn't it? Strasburg found himself in a jam with runners on first and second and one out when A.J. Ellis sent a base hit to left. And then Harper showed off his arm. I mean, he really showed it off. Perfect strike to the plate on the fly ... and Ramos dropped it. Or Hairston knocked it out of his glove. That's what Davey Johnson was arguing, to no avail. Whatever the case, what should've been Harper's first-ever Web Gem (and a really important one at that) instead allowed the Dodgers to tie this game, 1-1. Wow.

11:24 p.m. -- A dominant start by Strasburg ends in a no-decision. Tyler Clippard is on to pitch the eighth in a 1-1 game. Strasburg's final line: 7 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 9 K, 2 HBP.

11:39 p.m. -- Has this been a ballgame, or what? Man, what tension and what big-time performances by big-time players. That includes Clippard, who came up big to strike out Ethier with Kemp standing in scoring position. We go to the ninth of a fantastic, 1-1 ballgame.

11:58 p.m. -- Who wrote this script? Bryce Harper at the plate in the ninth inning of a tie game, the go-ahead runner on third. And a dubious decision by Don Mattingly to pull his only left-handed reliever one batter earlier so Espinosa would be turned around. Big mistake, because now Harper got a chance to bat against the right-handed Javy Guerra. And he delivered with a sac fly to left, scoring Rick Ankiel and giving Harper his first career RBI. Then Ramos drove in another run with a base hit to right, and just like that it's 3-1 Nats as Henry Rodriguez enters in the save situation.

12:11 a.m. -- Not so fast, everyone. Rodriguez is melting down in the ninth. A single, another single and a ground-rule double makes it 3-2 and puts the tying run on third, the winning run on second. Also, an idiot fan rushed the field. What a ballgame.

12:18 a.m. -- Oh, dear. One strike away from pitching out of the jam, Rodriguez uncorks a wild pitch that ties the game 3-3. Wow.

12:20 a.m. -- And now Rodriguez strikes out Gordon ... but on a wild pitch. The winning run is on third, and Tom Gorzelanny will enter to face Gwynn with the game hanging in the balance.

12:27 a.m. -- Everybody's heart still beating? Good, cause we're going to the 10th after Gwynn destroyed a 3-2 pitch from Gorzelanny ... but hit it right at LaRoche. What a baseball game, folks.

12:34 a.m. -- Nothing happening in the top of the 10th, as Jamey Wright retires the side. Gorzelanny coming back out for the bottom of the inning. Matt Kemp will lead off. Yikes.

12:37 a.m. -- And that's what you were afraid would happen. Kemp drills one into the center-field bleachers. Dodgers win, 4-3 in 10. An absolute crushing loss for the Nats.

Harper looks very comfortable tonight. Hard to believe he is only 19.

MicheleS said...

Ouch.. hate to see that.

Scott from Burke said...

Was it Hairston last year who said how happy he was to get traded out of DC?

NatsLady said...

Sorry, if the camera panned on Rizzo at the dinner, I missed it--will have to look at the rerun--ha, just kidding. Will look at the rerun of the game. Did Stras almost hit a homerun after Bryce's 2-bagger? Wow.

Scott from Burke said...

The Dodgers head trainer is a woman

waddu eye no said...

mark earlier, about uribe -

That was the 753rd batter Strasburg has faced in his career, and only the second one he's ever hit with a pitch.

Scott from Burke said...

I don't understand the trashing Dodgers fans..you go to a Nats game and it's like church...and you complain that they boo too loud? Isn't that how fans SHOULD act?

sm13 said...

If Danny had gloved that he might have had to throw through the umpire. That might have made things worse.

MicheleS said...

Wow that was a Nice breaking ball to get Uribe.

Scott don't care about the booing, having lived in LA, normally LA Fans don't show up until the 4th inning and leave as soon as teh 7th inning stretch is done. Good to see they are actually showing up and being loud.

Dave said...

If the prospect of all time, from the other team, made his much-hyped debut in your park, you might be inclined to boo. Just to be part of the experience.

My wife and I had a very nice night at Dodger Stadium year before last, the night Dunn hit three homers. I have no beef with the Dodger fans.

MicheleS said...

That was a nice throw, but sadly Ramos dropped.

Scott from Burke said...

He hit the ball away before he touched the plate

Anonymous said...

Ramos SUCKS. He is TERRIBLE.

JaneB said...

Awful awful awful.

Exposremains said...

wow Ramos still can't cacth the ball. I'd love to see more Flores

Dave said...

So did JHJ knock the ball out of the glove or not? Sure looks like it. But boy howdy, what an arm the kid has!

sm13 said...

What a throw. But, bang bang for Wilson. Tough play, tough drop.

Candide said...

Anyone still want to complain that Harper wasn't ready to get called up?

Scott from Burke said...

I went to opening day years ago...went to some tailgating before the game..didnt know anyone...they told me to help myself to food and drinks..a mariachi band was walking around..it was sublime..I LOVE LA

Steady Eddie said...

What Davey was justly complaining about is that Hairston slapped the ball away when it came out of Ramos' glove, and he hadn't touched the plate yet. Hairston should have been out for interference.

MicheleS said...

actually F&I it looks like Wilson had it and it popped out when he tagged JHJr. So he is NOT terrible.

mick said...

Bryce is the REAL DEAl... Ramos is a DOG, that is UNACCEPTABLE!

Another_Sam said...

He slapped the ball away???? [On that play at the plate.]

FP's 5:00 Shadow said...

Carp and FP completely missed the purpose of Johnson's arguement there.

Sunderland said...

Carp and FP missed that Harirston slapped the ball away.

JaneB said...

It did look like Hairston knocked the ball out of the way. Hairston was awful, not Ramos.

Dave said...

A couple of bad pieces of glove work doomed that inning--Espi's bobble, Ramos's dropped ball.

Knoxville Nat said...

If I have one negative about Ramos it is that he appears to have a problem holding on to balls when there is a play at the plate. Not sure if he gets nervous or what?

mick said...

you gotta catch and secure the damn ball that is 4-5 errors already from Ramos this season. it hurts because Harper made a hell of a throw!

Dave said...

I really believe Hairston was trying to get to the plate, looking at that replay again. I think it was legit. That one's on Ramos, in my opinion.

Steady Eddie said...

But Ramos still should have held onto it. He dropped throws all the time last year but seemed to have gotten straightened out and stopped doing that this year. Now this, in a such a great game being pitched by Stras.

Nats had better get another run or two.

Scott from Burke said...

Catcher has ball..drops it..and the ball is possibly slapped away oin what might have been a purposeful act..there is NO WAY Hairston should have been called out..Matitngly would have exploded..Ramos needs to make that play

Exposremains said...

never liked Hairston much when he played for us and certainly don't now. Thats a guy you want to boo

mick said...

that was ALL Eramos and Davey should be up in his grill, not the unpires

Don said...

Can someone please teach Ramos how to hold onto the ball during close plays at home. How many did he drop last year? And now another tonight. Sigh...

mick said...

Dodger fans suck, I can't believe they booed Harper. I am glad the Yankees humiliated them in 77 and 78. classless fans

MicheleS said...

SUNSHINE! I need the Bourbon and the Maalox. Looks like Clipp is coming in!

Sunderland said...

You want to boo Hairston, and think it's wrong for Dodger fans to boo Harper?

Dave said...

I think there's not a lot of logic at work here in this particular line of discourse, Sunderland.

rogieshan said...

Strasburg deserves a better fate tonight. Has any starter ever won the Cy Young with less than 200 innings pitched in a non-strike shortened season?

Cwj said...

Ramos doesn't "suck" at all. To say that is just silly.
He should have made that play, but he's human and makes mistakes.
Hairston looked to me like he was intentionally trying to interfere after the ball was dropped.

Scott from Burke said...

You lost me Mick..I'm a Dodgers fan..and what happened in 81? and 88? you know what sucks..when another team comes, like the Phillies..and there are more visiting fans than home fans..THAT SUCKS

Cwj said...

Anyway, some offense would be nice. I'm waiting for a home run because they are really struggling to get runners home.
Sorry to state the obvious :-)

Great outing by Strasburg. Aside from the HBPs, he made the Dodger lineup look pretty silly.
7 innings, 5 hits, 1 run, 9 Ks, and ZERO walks.
His record should be 4-0 or even 5-0 rather than 2-0.

Cwj said...

Umpire squeezing Clippard

Dave said...

So Kemp is fouling it off after strike four...

Sheer robbery.

mick said...

1st base umpire is a fat crap, I wish someone would punch his lights out. protecting Kemp was so obvious

mick said...

Scott, no argument Phillie fans are the worst period

Dave said...

So, yeah, Vin Scully is good. But those other two guys in the Dodgers radio booth, not so much. They can't even keep their own players straight. They called Harper "Brian" a while ago. They were just talking about Ethier's base-stealing stats, when Ethier was in the batter's box.

mick said...

HP and 1B umpires SUCK and ought to be fined. Bud Selig should be embarassed by this mickey mouse crew

sm13 said...

That's the real Tyler. Welcome back!

Scott from Burke said...

the umpiring has been fine...kemp fouled off two pitches with 2 strikes..some of those pitches were borderline..looked like one pitch was low and outside and called a strike..make him swing and miss

MicheleS said...

Phew.. Thanks Clipp! (sorry NatsLady, I doubted him), Plus Clipp got squeezed by the Ump.

MicheleS said...

Lord was Danny DUE! Come ON HARP!

Section 222 said...

It really didn't look to me like he was trying to swat the ball. He was scrambling to get back to home plate after getting hit in the face by Ramos's glove, which didn't have the ball in it at the time. In any event, he never touched the ball. Unfair to go after JHJr after that play. It was chaos out there.

Real shame Ramos couldn't hold on to the ball.

And now Harper can drive in the go ahead run!

Candide, I assume irony was dripping from your every word at 11:52?

Unless he goes into some deep and unexpected funk, the guy is up to stay. I think he's given a little extra charge to the hitters around him too -- that was a real professional AB by Espi, and nice make-up by Wilson.

And good to see Desi hanging tough, too.

Scott from Burke said...

Did you see the byplay between Clip and Harper? He may be a hero on the field but the Kid still has plenty to learn about how to act in the clubhouse.

Don't congratulate Clippared on being in line for the win, first of all, he hasn't won yet, second of all, he doesn't want to win, it should be Stras winning, 3rd of all, Clip just blew a save and lost a game day before yesterday and he hasn't forgotten it..... Clip was polite but shook him off.

Dave said...

Well, that was unpleasant. Wild pitch ties the game. 3-3, bottom of 9th, two outs, runner on second.

unbelievable!

m point is that after one batter you can tell HRod had nothing, put in Stammen

For those of you impressed by Henry Rodriguez and 101 mph, this is what you get. Just horrific. I have said it before, this guy is a thrower, not a pitcher.

THAT is the definition of a blown save, right there. A save could not be more blown than that.

Dave said...

So Rodriguez is gone, and in comes Stam..... uh, Gorzelanny.

Stammen was warming up in 8th, he should have been in after the 1st Dodger batter. this is also on Davey, HRod is a LOSER. Have any of you ever wondered why the Yankees dropped him so quick, HELLO

Yeah, no other closer has blown a save. Sheesh.

Last season HRod lost 2 games with wild pitches. So what did he do in the off season to correct it?? nothing, he sucks, the Yankees knew and the are probably wondering why a manager of Davey's caliber has not figured out what a ZERO he is

Free baseball in April. Shouldn't have been, but there you go.

What do we know from tonight? That Strasburg is still a masterful starter, and that Harper is sure enough ready for the big leagues.

Some guys just aren't comfortable wearing a top hat. Rodriguez was probably a little too pumped up pitching under the stars tonight.

Nats relievers have now stranded 18 of 20 inherited runners this season.
Good clutch pitching by Gorzelanny.

I'm drinking corona light, about 13 so far since you asked, lol

I want to see harper bat at least one more time

some people can be so annoying with their know-it-all attitude and negativity.

anyways, nats better win this game.

This one is on Davey. It was clear to anyone watching that OHenry didn't have ANY control tonight. He should have been pulled after the first few batters. When will they learn, when Henry is off he is way off and doesn't come back?

Sunshine_Bobby_Carpenter_Is_Too_Pessimistic_For_Me said...

I don't know about you folks, but there isn't enough Maalox in North America to solve this heartburn. What color-by-numbers book is Ramos using to catch? He's stabbing at pitches with his glove turned down. That one WP by MPG Rod actually ticked Ramos's glove. Shoulda been a PB.

I've got nothing left. I am totally limp. I'm like a strand of fettucine that's been left in boiling water too long.

Bob Carp, commenting on a Nats fan taking a photo in the stands: "That man should be out of film by now."

Uh, Bob, it's 2012. Kodak is bankrupt.

The spark was out of all 3 batters in the 10th. HRod's performance just took the wind out of them. Dodgers will win in 10th. What was McCatty and Davey thinking after HRod's firs few pitches and hell his first wild pitch??

KEMP

Such a shame. These guys played their hearts out. I don't know what to say.

Gorzo. Challenging Kemp. Not a good decision.

Well that was a disaster.
Good night

terrible loss on what should have been an exciting win for Nats. Its early enough I hope for Davey to see who can play under pressure who cannot. I have never been down on Clip and the other night i said my heart goes out to him, because I know he is a winner. HRod I know is a loser and is clueless out there. He had 3 freaking days off gang, don;t forget that. He threw 2 wild pitches. He sucks and needs to go to some other team stupid enough to take him

Gonat said...

For those who didn't like the negativity on here, don't listen to Ray Knight. He is slicing and dicing Henry.

rogieshan said...

To be fair to the manager, you have to give your closer a chance until he blows it. I think a few players got caught up in the Harpermania tonight.

Dave said...

Rough night for Ramos, too, except for that one hit. He definitely needs a rest until Tuesday. I presume Jesus is behind the plate tomorrow.

Scott from Burke said...

playoff preview?

mick said...

Davey coached very poorly tonight

mick said...

God Bless Ray Knight he is correct about Hrod, the sooner he goes,m the better off the Nats will be, 2 run lead, 3 days rest, 2 wild pitches, are you joking?????

D'Gourds said...

OMFG! Stammen has to be the closer! He's been lights out. Let's put this behind us and get back to solid baseball.

Sunshine_Bobby_Carpenter_Is_Too_Pessimistic_For_Me said...

@ Dave: You better believe Kid Flores will be catching tomorrow. I miss Pudge. I know Moose is a big bat and we need that, but I thought he had made more strides behind the plate. He really cost us the game. That bumbled tag on Hairston and that disastrous ninth. Oh Henry didn't help either.

night all. I am spent. It's all bourbon from here on out. Hold the Maalox, barkeep.

Gonat said...

SBCITPFM, what game were you watching? Ramos was set up on the left side and pitch after pitch is missing by over a foot across the plate at 98+

This is squarely on poor execution and poor pitching in the 9th and 10th.

Exposremains said...

you starting to see how much those injuries hurt. NO closer, 3rd and 4th hitter

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

The bullpen has blown 2 saves in 3 nights. when your hitting in genrals is as crappy as ours, we are going to be in close games, and now that is 4 vlown saves for the season in only 21 games. Our bullpen is not what he needs to be yet. Our starters are good enough we should never lose 3 in a row, but the others are just ot preforming (take away LaRoche who is). Most others are not.

Still in first place, but now I have a bitter taste not a good one.

Gio nees to pitch a complete game as I can no longer trust the bullpen.

Dave said...

Yep, Sunshine, I agree: Ramos's not holding on to that bullet throw from Harper at the plate was the turning point, in my opinion. Who knows what the game's like in the ninth inning if the Nats go into it 1-0.

Well, it's game #21, in late April. Much season to go.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

JRod sped the Dodgers bats up with way too many on fast balls. They couldn't get around on the fast ball. Why Ramos called anything but a fast ball was beyond me.

Why Henry didn't sjake him off even worse.

Anonymous said...

Rodriguez is the closer and will remain the closer. Those are the first runs he has given up in 10 outings and just his 1st BS. Storen has blown 7 saves in 55 chances and gave up 8 HR last year. They have to keep putting HROD out there. When he is bad it is ugly, but he had given up 1 hit in 26 AB entering tonight and throws 101 MPH. This was a valuable learning experience for him. He gave up a few hits which he is not used to so he tried to be too fine and got wild. He will learn from this.

Gonat said...

I listened to Charlie & Dave and they said Hairston swatted the ball out of Ramos mitt like ARod once did. They think that is why Davey argued. Not sure what FP and Carp said about it.

Scott from Burke said...

First of all Arod did it on the way to first base..when you go home it's LEGAL...2nd of all the whole thing is absurd..the play was fine..ramos messed up ..and the throw was wonderful..theres a major leaguer playing LF for the Nats..finally

baseballswami said...

Well now that everyone has their guts spilled all over the floor...is this really still April? Because this does not feel like the first month to me. Can we hold this together with starting pitching and duct tape until everyone returns from the dl? Three runs is usually enough:( did you see strassie with the expletive? My sentiments exactly.

Scott from Burke said...

Based on todays game Harper will be a big help..he looked so smooth..no strikeouts..did he swing and miss at all?

Gonat said...

Scott from Burke, discuss it with Dave and Charlie. You may be right, you may be wrong. They were adament that it was an automatic out which is why Davey argued. I really don't know.

Scott from Burke said...

that's too bad..i generally respect them...but they are 100% wrong on this one

Anonymous said...

I also agree with Sunshine...Ramos has to do a better job catching or blocking those balls. His reaction time seems awful slow. I realize those are WP, but he is a major league catcher and was just stabbing at the ball and backhanding balls in the dirt. He almost lost the game with Gorzo's pitch in the dirt that he tried to backhand. And that drop on Harper's throw simply cannot happen. That cost them the game.

Scott from Burke said...

aswful ganme behind the plate..to me the worst was dropping Harper's throw...his first game in the majors and he doesn't get that reward...too bad

Gonat said...

Scott - I guess Davey Johnson is wrong also:

"He smacked the ball," Johnson said. "He's out. ... He can do whatever you want with the catcher. But you cannot move the ball, or you're out."
