Game 2: Nats at Cubs

Photo by Mark Zuckerman / NATS INSIDER
It's a much warmer day at Wrigley Field, where the wind is now blowing out.
CHICAGO -- Wow, what a difference a couple of days makes. After a brutally cold and windy Opening Day, the conditions at Wrigley Field have taken a 180-degree turn. Temperatures will be up into the 60s by mid-afternoon, and the breeze has shifted and is now blowing out to left field.

That should mean a little more offense in Game 2 than there was in Game 1. That also puts some added pressure on Gio Gonzalez to keep the ball down in the zone and in the park. The Nats' new No. 2 starter makes his debut, looking to build off a strong spring training performance.

Right-hander Matt Garza is on the mound for the Cubs, and he'll see the exact same lineup Ryan Dempster saw on Opening Day. No changes for Davey Johnson, so that means Adam LaRoche (who, quite frankly, looked terrible striking out in his first three at-bats before drawing a key walk in the eighth inning) is once again hitting cleanup behind Ryan Zimmerman.

Plenty of updates to come all afternoon, so please check back often...

1:07 p.m. -- And we're underway with a strike from Matt Garza to Ian Desmond. The Nats are wearing their "Ohio State" uniforms (red jerseys, gray pants). Sorry, I'm just not a fan of this look.

1:13 p.m. -- Great play by shortstop Starlin Castro to make a diving stop of Danny Espinosa's hard grounder to the hole and then fire a strike to first base. But Espinosa just barely beat it out for an infield single. It didn't matter in the end, though, because Ryan Zimmerman grounded into a routine 6-4-3 double play to end the top of the first. Here comes Gio Gonzalez...

1:27 p.m. -- Well, I suppose that could've been a lot worse than it was. When you issue two walks, allow two stolen bases and uncork a wild pitch, you should feel pretty fortunate to give up only one run. Pretty ragged inning there for Gio. He did show off that brilliant curveball to strike out Reed Johnson, but then he was all over the place. Walked Joe Mather and Jeff Baker. Allowed a single to Starlin Castro. Then a wild pitch allowed Mather to score. Then he lost all track of Castro and let him steal second and third uncontested. It's 1-0 Cubs after one.

1:42 p.m. -- Much better stuff from Gonzalez in the second inning. He did allow a one-out single to Darwin Barney, but he struck out both Garza (trying to bunt) and Johnson (on another wicked curveball). Still 1-0 after two.

1:48 p.m. -- Gio is pretty good at making fun of his offensive skills. Or lack thereof. I'll tell you what, though: He just scorched a shot to deep center field that had extra bases written all over it until Marlon Byrd made a nice catch just in front of the warning track. Gio looked absolutely devastated.

2:13 p.m. -- Maybe LaRoche was ready to return after all. He just destroyed a 95 mph fastball from Garza and clanked it off the right-field foul pole, at least 30 feet up. The two-run bomb was LaRoche's first home run since April 24, 2011 and only his fourth ever in a Nationals uniform. It puts his team up 2-1 as we now go to the bottom of the fourth.

2:32 p.m. -- Well, that wasn't the kind of debut performance Gio Gonzalez wanted. He allowed five men to reach base in the bottom of the fourth, including a two-out, two-run triple by Reed Johnson, then an RBI single by Joe Mather. One more single by Starlin Castro, and Davey Johnson emerged from the dugout with the hook. Gio's final line: 3 2/3 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 3 BB, 6 K, 1 WP, 74 pitches, 46 strikes. The Nats trail 4-2 and they're going to have to ask a lot from their bullpen today.

2:45 p.m. -- A great opportunity for the Nats in the top of the fifth, but they can't finish it off. With runners on second and third and two outs, Ian Desmond scorched a line drive to deep left. Alfonso Soriano, though, made a lunging catch in front of the warning track to deny a sure, two-run double. So it remains 4-2 Cubs at the halfway point of this game.

2:59 p.m. -- You don't often see Ryan Zimmerman bark at an umpire. So you know he must have had a good case when he started yapping at Kerwin Danley after the latter rung him up on what appeared to be an outside fastball in the top of the sixth. Garza then got Werth on a check swing to end the inning. Werth's season totals, if you're wondering: 0-for-6, 3 Ks (and an RBI walk, of course). It's still 4-2 Cubs in the bottom of the sixth.

3:11 p.m. -- Nice job by Craig Stammen to keep this game within reach for the Nationals. The right-hander tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings in relief of Gonzalez and pitched his way out of a tight jam in the bottom of the sixth, striking out Joe Mather and getting Starlin Castro to ground out with two men in scoring position. So it remains 4-2 as we go to the seventh. The good news for the Nats: Garza is out of the game. First up out of the Chicago bullpen: Rafael Dolis.

3:20 p.m. -- Interesting, Steve Lombardozzi enters the game on a double switch and is playing ... left field. Guess that grand experiment hasn't been abandoned after all. Ryan Mattheus now pitching for the Nats, who are down two runs and down to their final six outs.

3:53 p.m. -- Well, we've seen this before, haven't we? Kerry Wood enters for the eighth inning trying to protect a lead. And the Nats take their frustration out on the Cubs bullpen. It started with Danny Espinosa, who fought his way through a fabulous at-bat, fouling off six pitches (including four with two strikes) before launching an opposite-field homer into the left-field bleachers. Then began the merry-go-round. Zimmerman singled. LaRoche singled. Carlos Marmol entered and walked Werth. Chad Tracy (the Opening Day hero) did it again with a two-run single to put the Nats ahead. Bernadina doubled in a run. Marmol walked Ramos and was yanked to a chorus of boos. Lombardozzi added another RBI single off Shawn Camp. Yes, it's now 7-4 Nats. Incredible.

4:10 p.m. -- Tyler Clippard navigates his way through the bottom of the eighth, so the Nats are now three outs away from another come-from-behind win. And, interestingly enough, Henry Rodriguez is warming in the bullpen to pitch the ninth with his team up 7-4. Looks like Davey Johnson is going with that "B" bullpen today after all. Though keep in mind, he could always have Brad Lidge available to bail out H-Rod if he gets into trouble.

4:18 p.m. -- Here comes Henry. Fasten your seatbelts, folks...

4:29 p.m. -- It's all over. Nats win 7-4. Ryan Mattheus gets the win. Henry Rodriguez gets the save. Chad Tracy gets the 2012 NL MVP award. The Nationals are 2-0.

I am nervous in the service, as my dad phrased it.

Mick said...

now that's an inning and I called it, lol

Dave said...

We stupidly tried to see if HD was back on (no) and missed Lombo's RBI. Lots of offense all of a sudden.

Mick said...

lol natsfan1a

Wally said...

Mick - I meant it the other way, meaning I am superstitious (and nervous Nellie too). The 'we should win' stuff violates all of my superstitious bones, and makes me even more nervous!

MicheleS said...

All of this with 2 outs.. NO QUIT in these guys!

TimDz said...

THAT was a FUN inning!

JaneB said...

I love to watch Clip march up the mound when he starts.

ehay2k said...

Umm -- MASN HD is out, even after rebooting my set top box - in the other room, so I wouldn't miss the game ;-)

But I think MASN is not showing the game. Instead of the Nats Cubds game, it appears to be an instructional video on how to play moneyball. Just guys taking pitches, then driving the baserunners in.

Hope the game comes back on because the Nats were down 4-2 and I think super closer marmol is coming in.

The Fox said...

Looks like Davey's got a good idea how to manage this team.

SayNoToClint said...

Allright 1a, I'm onboard. Low def until further notice.

natsfan1a said...

lol, ehay2k.

JaneB said...

I would go with Lidge too.

natsfan1a said...

Low-def it is, SayNo. ;-)

Mick said...

forgot about Henry...maybe with 3 run lead go with him?

Anonymous said...

Getting MASN HD just fine on mlb.com ... ;)

Wally said...

I guess Clip is in both of Davey's A and B bullpens?

Stammen was huge today, also. Funny, I thought both Tracy and Stammen would be prime candidates to go when Storen and Ankiel/Morse came back, but not so sure any more.

How do you give up Tracy, especially?

Mick said...

this HP ump is TERRIBLE!!!!

Section 222 said...

Definitely go with H-Rod. A 3-run save situation is the perfect spot for him.

Dave said...

Whoa. Clipp's making me nervous.

baseballswami said...

Dave - me, too.

Wally said...

Reed Johnson is bugging me.

natsfan1a said...

This Reed Johnson person is rather annoying. :-)

JaneB said...

I'd have been a wreck with anyone but Clipp. That sealed it..low def for me.

MicheleS said...

PHEW.. Clip got him swinging.

RickH said...

Clippard!!!

Wally said...

Hah, you owe me a coke, 1a!

natsfan1a said...

Atta way, Clip!

SayNoToClint said...

No reason to worry with Clip on the mound. It's only the second game it just took a little longer.

ehay2k said...

Nice battle. Glad Clip won it!

JaneB said...

Yikes! Henry! I want the spring training, PFB Henry today, please.

natsfan1a said...

lol, Wally, will have to get you at a future gathering.

Dave said...

Hot Rod for the close.

NatsJack in Florida said...

There's a reason people like me and Steve M dissapear during games after scrolling through the angst that occired until the 8th.

Yoi guys wear me out.

Bring on Henry!!!!

How about that bench!!!!

The Fox said...

Wally,

Clip is in Davey's A,B,and C bullpen.

Hopefully his arm won't fall off.

natsfan1a said...

uh huh, you're caaaalm as can be. ;-)

natsfan1a said...

LaRoche!

baseballswami said...

Adam LaRoche - just wow.I surely hope this is the guy we are going to see finally.

UnkyD said...

LaRoche SUCKS!!!! Off to quite the slow start.......hehe

And 3 RBI from our putrid bench.... How 'bout it , JayB?!

The Fox said...

If this is LaRoche's slow start whats he do when he warms up?

natsfan1a said...

One from column A, one from column B.

Werthless may be the worst free agent signing since Barry Zito.

Dave said...

When people want to rag Werth for not hitting, they should think of his game-tying RBI walk Thursday. Plenty of season left.

natsfan1a said...

Thursday, or yesterday? Wait, FP has me all confused now.

Jim Webster said...

I must recant my Laroche bashing from Wednesday. Looks like an entirely different guy today. Go Adam.

Smatt1001 said...

settle down MPHrod...

Joe Seamhead said...

Mick said...
maybe I am paranoid, but I am not a huge Lidge fan, why not have Tyler finish up the last 2

We do not want to burn him out the first week of the season. Also, Davey tries very hard to keep every one feeling like they are contributing.

Anonymous said...

HRod is going to make us crazy again - looks like bad Henry today. Hope McCatty has a short leash on him. Is Lidge warming up?

Erik said...

I really wish Ramos would stop backhanding those balls in the dirt.

Wally said...

Henry just hit 100. Followed by 99. Then the crazy slider.

natsfan1a said...

Yeah, Lidge is up. Two out now.

Wally said...

Way to go, boys. Great effort. Stammen was huge, picking up Gio.

Crazy slider to end the game by Henry.

The Fox said...

Jim Webster,

This is Adam's walk year (Nat's have an option). That is all the motivation he needs.

Also Davey really likes left handed good fielding 1st baseman, see Keith Hernandez and Rafael Palmeiro.

Nats WIN!!!!

natsfan1a said...

Powder River?

Smatt1001 said...

and MPHrod did! Nats win!!

Eugene in Oregon said...

Did folks see the batter flinch on that last pitch?

JaneB said...

Hen! Ry!

Just when I think I can't love these guys anymore...

Anonymous said...

@Anon 3:46...if you don't know these guys, you are not a true Nats fan..wake up and realize you have a competitive team in front of you...I'm sick and tired of all the negativity around here...its a long season, but Rizzo and Co. have put us in the best possible position to contend this year while not screwing up our future. They have done a great job and know what they are doing, the product on the field speaks for itself

natsfan1a said...

He gone. Game over.

Section 222 said...

If HRod has it figured out, he is going to be a weapon this year. Wow! High heat, and that last breaking ball was something to behold.

Smatt1001 said...

natsfan1a,

I think it was supposed to be "power" river...

natsfan1a said...

thanks, that makes more sense

Yeah, right, that was really bad Henry. A real Rizzo "fail" on the Willingham trade.

Erik said...

Storen better watch out...that was UNHITTABLE filth!!! Kimbrelesque if you will!!! Great win today and congrats to Stammen for saving the day and to Davey for managing his best game as a Nationals manager.

natsfan1a said...

see y'all later - gotta do some stuff

The Fox said...

Yes Eugene that was nice!

This is not your nervous 2011 Henry Rodriguez.

He had a great Spring and his command is much better. Might be able to take over the closer position if he gains enough confidence.

Section 222 said...

BTWCN GYFNG PFB!

Wally said...

Ok, now it is Kristina-time.

Anonymous said...

Sorry _ I panicked when he walked someone! Good Henry, Good Henry!!!

ehay2k said...

If that was Bad Henry, I'm OK if we never see Good Henry.

That was just flat out nasty stuff. Does anyone else think DJ is a much better manager for guys like HRod and Stammen? They just seem so much less afraid to fail. Riggleman didn't seem to tolerate "youthful mistakes", for lack of a better phrase.

FS said...

OMG 272 comments! How will I ever finish reading it all?

Great commentary markZ. Really helpful if you miss a game. Glad to see Nats on top.

baseballswami said...

13 K's??? Our bullpen was outstanding today!

The Fox said...

All you Anon's need to relax there are still 160 games to go. I don't think some of you are going to make it.

As for Gio he really didn't pitch that badly. He couldn't throw his fastball for strikes because the ump was not giving the low part of the plate to either team.

He pitched more like a AL pitcher he needs to be more aggressive. I bet he goes after the Reds on Thursday.

Cwj said...

Go Nats!!
I for one did not expect that comeback in the 8th.
The Cubs hitters looked helpless against Henry after the walk.

baseballswami said...

Seems like our pitchers do better when they pitch to contact and get ground ball outs. Even Stras did that on Thursday. Well, except for Henry, of course. We have certain hitters that need to slap it on the ground, too, instead of swinging for the fences. So, who is still o-fer? DeRosa and Werth?

Didn't see much of the game, but saw when Davey pulled Gio. Toughest decision--is the pitcher not making it, or is he just about to figure it out? Fortunately, we've got this GREAT bullpen, so Davey has choices...

Gio, we still love you. Next time.

Wow, that ALR dude sure sucks, really wished we had cut him after his poor showing on opening day.
