Game 17: Nats at Padres

US Presswire photo
The Nats open a six-game, West Coast trip tonight at Petco Park.
So much for Ryan Zimmerman having no doubts about his ability to return to play tonight. The star third baseman is not in the Nationals' lineup for their series opener against the Padres, apparently still bothered by the right shoulder inflammation that kept him from playing Saturday. Zim insisted the following day the injury was "nothing" and that he'd be good to go for the start of this West Coast trip. Obviously, that's not the case, which can't be considered good news for anyone. Stay tuned.

Steve Lombardozzi will instead start at third base tonight, with Mark DeRosa again taking Zimmerman's regular No. 3 spot in the lineup (though DeRosa will play right field, with Jayson Werth sliding over to center field because the Nationals are facing a left-hander in Clayton Richard).

Gio Gonzalez, makes his fourth start of the season, hoping to benefit from Petco Park's spacious gaps (not to mention a Padres lineup hitting a collective .214 so far this season.

I'm not on this road trip out west, so no live updates. Enjoy the game and the late-night conversation. (And for anyone still having trouble posting comments with the new log-in system, feel free to email me and I'll do my best to help navigate you through the process.)...

LaRoche looks at two inside and waves at the armpit-high cheese to leave runners on first and second.

The March of the Do-naughts continues.

JaneB said...

Ooof! More runners in scoring position, left on base. I want Gio to win this game! I wish Richard HAD thrown it away.

Holden Baroque said...

Welcome to the Other Side. Middle 6, no score.

sjm308 said...

Off for the night - I figure the way Gio is pitching and we are hitting they will still be playing when I wake up tomorrow

thank god for dvr

hope the Red hat with blue trim that Geico gave out a couple years ago will still be on my head tomorrow, with rain its been 6 days straight.

Go Nats!!

mick said...

I bet the Nats get no hit before we pitcth a no hitter

NatsLady said...

Who is this Veneble guy, catching everything and now bunting for a hit?

Scott from Burke said...

Mitch Williams on MLB explaind that because his right foot crossed his left leg duringt heh delivery he cant go to first...balk

mick said...

how long is Zim going to be out? never thought both Zim and Morse would be out

Holden Baroque said...

Mick--how much?

Scott from Burke said...

how long is Zim going to be out? that is the million $ question

Holden Baroque said...

Through 7 now. Maybe they should use a bigger ball, or something.

MicheleS said...

Gio, talk to Jordan.. he can explain how this works.

NatsLady said...

ATL tied it up in LA. Get some runs, Nats!!!!

JaneB said...

No fair playing the Maximum Ryan commercials right now.

Holden Baroque said...

From your kb to his ear, Michele--there is Gio talking to Jordan, who is smiling wryly. No, he really is.

whatsanattau said...

Sometimes, upon proving no injury with an MRI, the player comes back quickly. I'm predicting Friday.

Section 222 said...

Let me just say for the record: (1) I want the Nats to win this game really bad; (2) I could care less whether Gio gets the win; and (3) I doubt Gio cares either. All the boo-hooing about run support for individual starters is silly.

A DC Wonk said...

I gotta tell ya' -- Gio looks amazingly sharp. He retired 10 of 11, then the bunt hit, and Gio came back and struck out the #3 and #4 hitters to close out the inning.

sjm308 wrote: Wonk, not sure how long you have been on but its good to have you and "our" sunshine bobby" back.

Thanks, bud!

Holden Baroque said...

Nats catch a break there. Worse pitches than that ball four to Ramos have been called strikes tonight. But it's first and second, no outs, Lombo bunting.

JaneB said...

Gio does look great. I like seeing the dirty looks he gets from the guys he strikes out.

JaneB said...

Goon squad!

A DC Wonk said...

Lombo with a terrific bunt. Everyone in the ballpark knew he was bunting and still got the job done (and almost beat it out). He needs to give some other guys on our team some lessons.

And while I'm typing: Goon squad! Chad Tracy gets the single through the box to score two runs!

MicheleS said...

222. I think the good thing about our team is that all of the SP don't care about their numbers, but only care about wins..

In the mean time.. GOON SQUAD!

Holden Baroque said...

Chad Tracy! Two run pinch hit RBI single. Nats up 2-0.

NatsLady said...

Mr. Tracy!!!!!! Look at that Gio smile!!!

Gonat said...

Davey Johnson pulls a rabbit out of the cap again! Doesn't use JFlores and instead goes lefty/lefty with Chad Tracy. 2 run RBI single. Unreal.

waddu eye no said...

2-0
huge lead

nitey nite

whatsanattau said...

I think maybe Gio cared a little bit

A DC Wonk said...

NatsLady -- you're right -- Gio does have an awesome smile. And, not only that, but as you, and others have noted (and I finally noticed for the first time) -- he smiles a lot during the game. Especially when he's walking off the mount fter pitching a scoreless innng. (Which has been happening an awful lot this season!)

Holden Baroque said...

Shark in to run for Tracy, Luke Gregerson in to pitch for the Padres.

I'm guessing Davey will double-switch Nady and Bernadina, with Stammen coming in.

Gonat said...

Zim loves Gregerson

JaneB said...

There is a LOT to be said for joyfulness. And Gio seems to live in that space. I just love him.

Section 222 said...

So what's the bullpen lineup tonight? Mattheus/Clip/H-Rod? Or let Stammen pitch a few against the lineup they put up against the lefty Gio?

NatsLady said...

Gio smiles in the dugout, Gio smiles when he hits, Gio smiles when he comes off the mound. Gio doesn't smile when he's pitching. Great focus.

JaneB said...

I have to be up so early ! But I can't stop watching.

MicheleS said...

2222 as long as we don't see Lidge, I will be happy

Holden Baroque said...

There is a LOT to be said for joyfulness.

And of all the things that should go without saying, too. Go figure. But yes. Every time.

Desmond strikes out and Bernadina caught stealing (good throw).

2-0, Nats. Stammen coming in.

TimDz said...

I know it's just a few starts, but Gio in the National League could be special for the next few years...

A DC Wonk said...

FP points out: Gio -- finishes with a 20-scoreless inning streak. Yowza.

Holden Baroque said...

Tim, yes, just a few starts, but he hasn't allowed a run in what, two and a half games?? Yes, this is good.

Scott from Burke said...

flipped on leno for a second...painful

Holden Baroque said...

OK, it's 9:00 on the West Coast.

WTH is our MRI??

Nattydread said...

"A" bullpen.

Scott from Burke said...

gio a third of the way to Hershiser's record

A DC Wonk said...

Wow. After a walk, Stammen threw a good pitch, but Hudson reached out to stroke it for a single. Davey with the quick hook -- in comes Clip. Davey wants to start this series off on the right foot.

NatsLady said...

Now we'll see if Clip is back to his old form. Coming in with 2 on no outs in the 7th.

Holden Baroque said...

OK, Davey ain't [AB] around. Stammen walked Maybin and gave up a hit to Hudson, and that's all he gets. Clippard comes in to first and second, no outs.

Gonat said...

That looked like old Stammen. Can't walk the leadoff man in the inning.

Anonymous said...

You simply cannot walk the lead-off hitter with a 2-0 lead and nobody out to a team that can't hit. I thought they were starting to grasp this concept.

JaneB said...

Ugh. I've banned tv shows that show torture and killing from being on TV at bed time, because they give me nightmares. I hope this game doesn't end up in nightmare terrirtory. C'mon Clip!

A DC Wonk said...

Clip battles back from 2-0 to get Alonso on a K. That sure felt nice.

MicheleS said...

UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! that STINKS

Anonymous said...

And there is the Jayson Werth that we know so well...what a bum!!!

A DC Wonk said...

Uggh . . . single to center, runners would have held, but Werth boots is (the first error by any Nats OF'er this year) and one run scores.

JaneB said...

I trust in Tyler.

Holden Baroque said...

Ouch. Bartlett singled hard to center, hard enough that the runner on second was holding at third ... until Werth committed the first outfield error of the season for the Nats. One run scores, runners now at first and third with one out. Kotsay PH for the pitcher.

Holden Baroque said...

Clippard is throwing to first an awful lot for a guy who needs to get the hitter here....

Holden Baroque said...

And he doesn't get the call on the low strike, and the runner, Bartlett, does steal on a 2-2 pitch.

A DC Wonk said...

Wow. Katsay fouled off nine pitches in that at bat. How many strikes can you throw to a batter in one at bat?! Finally, then, a pop up.

Holden Baroque said...

11th pitch of the at bat, Kotsay finally pops to short for the second out. Still runners at 2nd and 3rd.

Holden Baroque said...

Wonk, do you think Davey brings Clipp back after all these pitches?

A DC Wonk said...

You know what was interesting . . . when Kostay was at bat -- runners on 2 & 3 with one out -- the infield was playing back.

Scott from Burke said...

clipp should not pitch the 8th

Holden Baroque said...

Good catch, Wonk. Davey trusts Clipp that much, and even on the road, trusts the Goon Squad.

MicheleS said...

Okay. I am not going to be able to handle this for the rest of the season. Had to switch the channel.. WGN was showing Tommy Milone's A's vs White Sox. A's up 2-0 top 9

JaneB said...

Phew. Just ...phew.

I need a power outrage because I can't...turn it...off...

NatsLady said...

Clip is the best. There is no "give up" in that guy.

whatsanattau said...

Can I breathe now

Scott from Burke said...

infield playing back..a single gives up the lead...ground ball just a tie..what was REALLY interesting was the announcers didnt mention it...

NatsLady said...

I agree, let Mattheus come in. Clipp did his job.

Holden Baroque said...

Can't watch??? This is what it is all about.

A DC Wonk said...

Wonk, do you think Davey brings Clipp back after all these pitches?

I dunno. Clip threw 28 pitches that inning (!). I'm glad it's Davey making that call and not me! ;-)

If MPHRod is pitching the 9th, who else can pitch the 8th? Gorzo? (presumably, Lidge gets the 9th tomorrow).

Scott from Burke said...

saw something today about bartolo colon throwing 38 straight strikes or something like that..crazy

Holden Baroque said...

Correction, Andy Parrino got the pinch hit single that Werth tried to throw before he picked it up, for an unearned run.

A DC Wonk said...

what was REALLY interesting was the announcers didnt mention it...

I think one of them did mention it . . . but as soon as they said it, it seemed they forgot about it. I thought it was a very interesting call by Davey.

Tangent: they just showed a graphic that this guy Cashner has the highest average speed in the league on his pitches (MPHRod is 2d)

TimDz said...

Wonk..
glad you figured out the sign on procedure...
Looks like Burnett in the 8th...
Hope to see MPHRod for the close...

Scott from Burke said...

werth you overpaid curmudgeon..how about it?

Off-topic Alumni News, while I prepare the bourbon and Maalox for the bottom 8th and 9th:

This is why the Phils aren't going to be much this year. In their 8-5 win over Arizona tonight, ex-Nats Pete Orr and Laynce Nix combined for five RBI. That team got old in a hurry.

A DC Wonk said...

(correction: Clip threw 26 pitches (18 strikes))

skidge said...

Can't believe I'm still up... turning into a baseball person...

Scott from Burke said...

they've had 2 days off..i'd like to see lidge finish the 8th if needed

MicheleS said...

More Alumni news. Dunn just struck out to end the Sox/A's game. Tommy Milone pitched 8 scoreless (only gave up 3 hits). A's win 2-0

nwells2 said...

Danny Espinosa really needs to stop swinging for the fences. His strikeouts are absolutely killing us. I mean he is supposed to be a two-hole hitter, which is typically a guy that is known for his contact right? He needs to get rid of that terrible uppercut swing and level it out. He's swinging WAY underneath balls. He also needs to pick a side of the plate.

Holden Baroque said...

Werth walks and steals second, but LaRoche strikes out.

2-1, Nats, baja 8.

Holden Baroque said...

And Welcome Skidge, to baseball-person-hood!

MicheleS said...

222 did you see Burnett's Line on BA? .222 lefties and righties.

Holden Baroque said...

Sean Burnett in to pitch to Venable, Headley ("that's HEADLEY!!"), and Hundley

peric said...

Power hitting lefty Matt Skole with 24 RBI and 4 home runs and a .375 average now in Hagerstown. Thinking he might replace Rendon in Potomac at the half year point.

Scott from Burke said...

If i could face any major leaguer to try and get a hit, after the knuckleballers, i would choose burnett

Scott from Burke said...

he's as intimidating as a waffle

Holden Baroque said...

You remember the Peanuts cartoons where Charlie Brown gets undressed by line drives? Well, Chase Headley just about stripped Burnett right there, with a line drive as up the middle as middle gets. Nice move just to get out from under his cap, there.

TimDz said...

Nice Mel Brooks reference ...

Scott from Burke said...

i thought i made it up..did mel brooks use that? damn

Holden Baroque said...

Srsly, Scott? Where do you play now?

Scott from Burke said...

Bethpage Black

MicheleS said...

SFB: He may be a waffle, but he got it done!

Holden Baroque said...

Wow. That hasn't been a strike all night, but Burnett will take it.
Still 2-1, Nats, after 8.

A DC Wonk said...

he's as intimidating as a waffle

And Livo was even less intimidating. But, hey, guys are batting .222 against him.

Anonymous said...

Scott...yeah that 0.00 ERA is pretty terrible. He really got shelled tonight!!! Wow!!!

MicheleS said...

Thank god tomorrow night's game is at 6:30 pm

Scott from Burke said...

Livo is a hefty, wiley guy..but props to Burnett..that was a fantastic appearence...he should feel great about himself..well done

Eugene in Oregon said...

Brother could you spare a run (or two)?

Scott from Burke said...

F&I I didnt start watching this team 2 weeks ago, and i have seen some dreadful burnett outings..thanks for the info though

Holden Baroque said...

Bethpage Black

Isn't that a golf course?

Scott from Burke said...

has to be an error

MicheleS said...

RAMOS!!!!!!!

JaneB said...

Wilsooooon! Great hit!

Holden Baroque said...

Wow, Venable just whiffs on a line drive to right by Ramos, for a three-base error with one out. Got to get this one in, Lombo...

Scott from Burke said...

yes, site of the 2002 and 2009 us open...on long island..paid $35 to play there a few weeks before the 02 open..more expensive now...VERY tough to get a tee time, so i slept in the parking lot

Section 222 said...

Missed that MichelleS. I guess his numbers are even better (if that's humanly possible) now.

Lombo, let's see some situational hitting here.

Game tomorrow at 6:30 pm. Thank goodness.

Holden Baroque said...

I was asking where you play baseball...

JaneB said...

Sunshine Bobby! You're back!

MicheleS said...

Insurance runs are great! Love that from the Arm!

Scott from Burke said...

ankiel!!

A DC Wonk said...

Carp point out: two lefty Nats get two hits, and all three RBI's, off of lefty pitchers

Anonymous said...

Then Scott, I guess you are aware that Burnett has given up just 3 runs in his last 30 IP. Don't throw a match a near him, he might explode!!!

Holden Baroque said...

Ankiel! with a pinch-hit RBI single

... right before getting picked off. But in the inning, one run, on one hit and an error, nobody left on. MPH coming in to cancel the 9th inning.

Scott from Burke said...

ANKIEL!!!

MicheleS said...

And then he gets picked off... grrrr..

222.. I see you saw Boz's cheeky post.

Holden Baroque said...

Ankiel stays in center, Werth to right, DeRosa to third, Lombo--go sit down and think about that last at bat. Henry in to close.

Holden Baroque said...

Scott, seriously, where do you play baseball, if you do?

Scott from Burke said...

lombo should have been binting..fp blabbering on about how he's such a great bunter..runer on 3rd one out..SQUEEZE EM IN

Scott from Burke said...

i don't play baseball..i golf sometimes, and that strikeout pitch was amazing

nwells2 said...

henry rodriguez has the DIRTIEST stuff ever!!

MicheleS said...

MPHRod is FILTHY!

DWS said...

Sitting here at 2:02 AM AST watching MLB.TV sweating Henry. And thanking our host for his efforts.

Beauty of shift work.

A DC Wonk said...

And that slider (to strike out the lead-off batter) is exactly why HRod has the potential to be an all-star closer (if he can be just a tad more consistent with this fastball location). It's devastating . . . seeing it in person it's even better.

djinFl. said...

Excellent game. Davey seemed determined to get this trip started with a win, and pushed all the right buttons.
A win tomorrow is another series win.
Sleep tight all.

MicheleS said...

Good Night Everyone! See you tomorrow!

nwells2 said...

i can realllllllllly get used to this

Sunshine_Bobby_Carpenter_Is_Too_Pessimistic_For_Me said...

MPH Rod at an even buck. Nats' 13-4 record will be best in NL when Dodgers lose.

"Woo-Hoo" (Copyright, MicheleS, 2011).

Section 222 said...

Ballgame. Kudos to MPH-Rod. He's a force. And Gio? Wow. Great start to the road trip. Well worth staying up for.

Joe Seamhead said...

Good night, Irene!

A DC Wonk said...

HRod with the save. 12 pitches, 9 of them stries. ERA still 0.00. Only one hit all year (in 9 appearances). He really seems to have matured since last year (which often happens to 24 year olds who turn 25).

Nats: 13-4 baby!!

GYFNG!!

I'll sleep happily tonight (although for not long enough ;-) )

Holden Baroque said...

Henry really looks like he's coming into his own. A clean 3:02.
HRod gets the save, Gio gets the win, the Nats starters haven't given up a run in a couple of dozen innings, and they are still in Soul Possession.

MicheleS said...

Oh Henry!!! This guy doesn't have the potential to be an all-star closer...he has the potential to be the BEST closer in the game. I love Storen, but tough decisions are coming if he keeps this up. He is simply unhittable!!! Even F.P. said he has never seen anything like this.
