Game postponed, makeup Thursday

CHICAGO -- Steady rain showers throughout the late afternoon and the threat of more to come forced the postponement of Monday's game between the Nationals and Cubs.

It will be made up Thursday at 2:20 p.m. EDT, negating what had been a scheduled off-day for both clubs.

The Nationals were already planning to stay over in Chicago Wednesday night and not fly to Philadelphia until mid-afternoon Thursday, so players actually preferred to extend this series rather than play a day-night doubleheader either Tuesday or Wednesday.

"We were going to have the day off Thursday, but we weren't going to travel til 3 o'clock," manager Davey Johnson said. "So we'll probably get to Philly about the same time we would have normally. There was some conversation about a split [doubleheader], but I think everybody wanted to do what we're doing."

Johnson said he will bump each of his starting pitchers back a day, so Chien-Ming Wang will now pitch Tuesday night, with Ross Detwiler

swami, there are 2 million reasons that I predict Wang starting tomorrow. May he be known from then on as "6-gun Wang" instead of "6 run Wang."

I guess the baseball gods were just upset that we were going to have a entire 3 game series at Wrigley without a day game. I think there's an unwritten rule somewhere that says that can't happen.

Well, if you are going to get rained out Chicago's a great city to be in. Had the best seafood at Joe's Seafood & Prime Steak on E. Grand. Dessert at the Cheescake Factory on N. Michigan of course. Yum.

Good news, Nats are in sole possession of 4th place as of now!

So - no game, channel surfing, Rizzoli and Isles on TNT -- murder in a baseball locker room. Entire show so far taking place at a fictitious stadium in Boston. Looks like the murder weapon will be a baseball bat. Getting my baseball fix after all in a very sick and twisted way.

baseballswami.... don't give away the ending of Rizzoli and Isles. I actually am tivoing it because I'm watching some of the other games that are on.

Bryan - I promise not to tell -- it is kind of strange, though to be watching the made- up "Boston Pilgrims".

And in Chicago, the rain, ten minutes after achieving its nefarious mission at Wrigley Field, departs, leaving behind a lovely moonlit evening.

Would have preferred Zmann against Phillies. a) we extend him couple more days before shutting him down for the season. b) we could have had a good matchup against one of their aces.

I would have preferred the double-header, as the Cubs don't refund or exchange for the postponement, you have to go to the rescheduled game. (The Nats exchange for any regular season game, subject to availability, which would have worked for me.)

So I'm out the parking (cash) and the ticket price because I can't stay til Thursday. I'm not the only one, there was plenty of loud moaning from Cubs fans about replacing a night game with a day game. Won't see the Thursday game because I'll be back to, y'know, working.

But, Nats are NOT IN LAST PLACE. That's the bright side of not playing.

On a different note, Rizzo said the Nats have their lead-off CF in the minors already and Span was just going to be a stop-gap anyway. Who was he referring to -- Hood, Perez, Brown?

Hey Insiders--

The Nats have another Two Dollar Tuesday game coming up. It's next Tuesday against the Cincinnati Reds. More info here:

As usual, you can get tickets from the box office or online, but they tack on service charges for online sales. The discounted tickets always sell out within a few days, so act quickly if you plan to go. I'll be there.

Game was postponed last night and CMW still gave up 3 first inning runs. Sorry, that's mean. BUT TRUE!

Good question. Did he say that on 106.7?

'Already in the Minors'.... so not talking about his new 1st round Draft pick Brian Goodwin. I would have guessed Eury Perez last year as he hasn't had a great 2011. I don't think Hood is going to be a CF. Maybe it is the maturation of Roger Bernadina or new pickup Eric Komatsu. Can't be Bryce Harper as he doesn't project out as a leadoff. Corey Brown is finally hitting his weight.

I love the statement like that with no names named and the funny part is of all the names I named only Komatsu has been consistently batting leadoff in the Minors (a week and 1/2 with Harrisburg).

Eury Perez has spent the bulk of his time with the PNats batting 9th I believe and when his bat was hot he batted some leadoff. Eury Perez hasn't been getting on base and really struggling with RH pitching. So unless Eury gets back to form, I don't know if he ever makes it. I know Baseball America projected him last year as the 2013 leadoff for the Nats.

My 3 biggest disappointments in the position players in the Minors are Eury Perez, Derek Norris and Corey Brown as all appeared to be fast-tracked.

I hope we are still in fourth place tomorrow at this time.

Bringing forward the discussion we started yesterday morning on the September Callups, Kilgore throws in thoughts on Peacock and Milone.

Rizzo with a bold proclamation. Erik Komatsu is one to keep an eye on. Eury Perez had a good Winter Ball and has slumped the last month. Doesn't take enough walks to be a leadoff.
