Atilano to DL with bone chips

CINCINNATI -- Luis Atilano is headed to the disabled list with bone chips in his right elbow, leaving the Nationals to decide between one of three left-handers to take his spot in the rotation and start Sunday in Milwaukee.

John Lannan, Ross Detwiler and Matt Chico are all candidates for promotion, though Mike Rizzo wouldn't reveal today which lefty is getting the call.

"We want to bring up somebody who we can get a good, long look at, that gives us an opportunity every five days to win that game," Rizzo said.

UPDATE AT 2:01 P.M. -- FYI: I was just told John Lannan remains with Harrisburg and remains scheduled to start tonight. So it would appear he's not going to be the guy to get called up.

I guess the Nats are going to a 4-man rotation.

No they want a five man rotation. Livan pitched today and will pitch again in 5 days.

Sorry to hear that, but good luck to Atilano in recovering from the injury.

Posted too late in the gameday thread (or maybe no one else is worried about it), but reposting here: The line about this having been a problem for weeks seems troublesome to me. Is this another case of a guy hiding an injury? It feels like this is happening often with this team; I really fear a "tough it out" line that's being pushed on guys.

@Steve I wonder if this is the line being pushed on the players, or if perhaps, especially with a borderline major league guy like Atilano, he just didn't want to go on the DL and be forgotten about.

He knows about the glut of arms about to become available just like everyone else. I imagine there has to be a lot of stress on the minds of guys like Atilano, Martin, and Stammen who could get yanked at any time and never come back.

I'm with you @Steve. I wish Atilano well, but I sure wish our pitchers would get the message: When your arm is hurting you need to say something. It helps no one if you "tough it out" and get shelled. You may think you're protecting yourself when you keep it quiet, but you're not. And you're definitely hurting the team, which is more important. Injured pitchers get hit. Playing through pain doesn't work when you're a pitcher. So don't do it!

This is a problem in all of baseball, not just the Nationals. Look at the transaction wire every day and you will see players going on and off the dl. These guys try and hide most of their injuries and want to play through pain. There are just too many guys waiting to take their place. I admire kids playing in pain but wish they would realize it might hurt their careers long-term.

Anon, I've wondered about the same thing. I would not be inclined to put in all on a given player when one hears comments from Riggleman or Rizzo complimenting a guy for gutting it out.

In other news, my NatsInsider tee arrived today. As a previous commenter noted, it's not a chintzy fabric but a heavier weight knit. The fit is good and there aren't any typos. I'll wear it proudly to Nats Park or out and about. (psssst...over here. I'm an Insider. Yeah, that's right. How about you?)

If you're injured and still pitch, you're going to lose, the team is going to lose and you'll DEFINITELY be replaced.

Going on the DL while you're winning is a much better option.
