Game 88: Padres at Nats

Mark Zuckerman / NATS INSIDER
Winners of three straight, the Nationals today seek their first four-game win since early-May. They are finally on something of a sustained roll, having won 11 of their last 18. That doesn't sound impressive? Well, that's a .611 winning percentage over the last three weeks, a rate that over a full season would equate to 99 wins. Obviously, they've got to prove they can do this for more than three weeks, but it's certainly a start.

With left-hander Robbie Erlin on the mound for the Padres, Davey Johnson is giving Adam LaRoche a rare day off. In his place is Tyler Moore, who starts only his third game of the season at first base. The rest of the lineup stays the same, with Wilson Ramos back in there behind the plate. (Another interesting note: The Nats this season are 11-5 when Ramos plays, 34-37 when he doesn't.)

Stephen Strasburg, owner of a 1.29 ERA over his last nine starts, gets the ball this afternoon against his hometown team. He hasn't surrendered more than two earned runs in any of those nine outings, quite a stretch of dominance for the right-hander.

I'm off today, taking a quick breather before heading to Philadelphia tomorrow. Enjoy the conversation...

Stras plunks a third batter. Wondering if he's done after this one.

Though looked like a k the pitch before.

I guess Stammen comes in to see if he can do it.

We're not going to get no stinkin' wild card, Manassas. We're going to win the division.

Braves coming bak.7-3. 4 straight hits.

im close to pulling Stra

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

Can't believe nobody was up in the bullpen.

David Proctor said...

Come on Stras, stop putting men on base for free. A solo shot can't hurt you up by 8. A grand slam can.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

There bullpen is poor.

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

JUpton swings through 3 balls to K with 2 on and 1 out. 7-3 game

Stra is gassed. Go get em

this is why we need to not have sunday day games in Washington in the summer. 4:30 pm starts for July and August

David Proctor said...

Alright Stras. Far from your best outing, but you survived.

Holden Baroque said...

And as FP would say, there goes the Quality Start.

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

Good job Stras minimizing damage.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Get away days, that will not happen.

Bastardo K's Freddie Freeman for the 3rd out.

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

Davey needs to threaten publicly to sit Bryce more often. 3-3 with a walk.

Holden Baroque said...

Dang, there goes another of my posts!! WTH?

David Proctor said...

Davey knew exactly what he was doing. As I've said, Davey deserved criticism at times for his in-game management, but when it comes to managing people, there's nobody better.

David Proctor said...

Here's mad Freddie Freeman: https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-9TC07BMjkNA/UdnIgXKKbuI/AAAAAAAABWg/zbnFRx6fTS8/s500/freeman.gif

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Double switch shark to right batting 9th stammen bat 5th

BigCat said...

Actually Stra was pretty nasty, but for whatever reason, when he gets it up, even at 96-97, they hammer it. That little guy went upper deck on him. Must be a deception thing with him. He's falling off to first base with that shoulder flying open, so the hitters see that fastball very well

BigCat said...

So Manassas.....what do you say about Eck now?

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

Craig Stammen steps in and the 1st pitch on cue is a BP fastball.

David Proctor said...

Why is Stammen getting hit so badly lately? I like Davey putting him in here because it's low leverage. But...

BigCat said...

wow Zim. Moore almost called for a fair catch. But its an out Good play

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

David, just getting too much plate and lack of movement on his pitches.

Read my comments pre-game as Ray Knight interviewed him. He called Stammen the pitching MVP. Not sure what game Ray is watching.

David Proctor said...

That's a pick that LaRoche makes 10/10 times.

Faraz Shaikh said...

mlb.com is acting up again.

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

LaRoche makes that play almost every time.

David Proctor said...

They're teeing off on Stammen. Put in Krol.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

How many errors has LaRoche saved this year.

Hitting Stamnen hard again.

jeffwx said...

Then they must open the stars and stripes club when gametime heat index is above 95.

a 4 pm start gives them plenty of time to getaway.

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

2 quick runs. 1 earned and 1 unearned. Sheesh.

BigCat said...

Hmmmmm....we aren't home yet. our pen has been shaky as of late

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Stammen needs to get out of this funk.

Lets score a few more in the bottom 7

Joe Seamhead said...

Desi gets the error on a ball that ALR makes look routine. Not a big Tyler man fan at either LF or at first.
This is getting much closer then it should be.

jeffwx said...

Then they must open the stars and stripes club when game time heat index is above 95.
And you have plenty of time to get away with a 4 pm sunday start unless one team travels to the other coast.

BigCat said...

Go Krol and then let Clip have the 9th

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Middle relief recently have struggled

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

Bastardo puts 2 Braves on with 1 out.

Jim Zurer said...

Strasburg hit three batters today but not one of them moved a muscle to try and get out the way of the pitches. None of them were that far inside in my view.

Is it my imagination but have ballplayers stopped trying to avoid getting hit?

David Proctor said...

I don't miss Tyler Moore being in the lineup...

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

Ramos joins the hit parade!

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Ball right down the middle and poor TyMo doesnt come close to hitting it.

Holden Baroque said...

I'm guessing KC, Houston, and the Cubs, right off the top, sjm.

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

Nats have had 3 innings with bases loaded and end up 1-3 with the big Granny.

Holden Baroque said...

jeffwx, worse than St. Louis? That's pretty bad.

jeffwx said...

No...the one advantage the braves have over us is their bench.
Good to pick up a bat to give the outfield a break, esp Werth.

BigCat said...

agree sjm. Shark and Tracy are almost automatic outs these days. And Moore ain't DiMaggio either

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Venable playing slightly left of center mad that catch fairly easily.

David Proctor said...

Ugh. Stammen still in.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Ohlebdorf will have to go 3

Holden Baroque said...

DP, who would prefer to have mopping up with a 5-run lead?

jeffwx said...

st. louis is bad, but they used to get more cold frontal passages and they are not close to a heat source such as the bay where water temps reach the upper 80s. Pave the bay.

David Proctor said...

Bad play by Moore. Rendon had it.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Stammen slower than TyMoore.

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Stammen hasn't been good since he pitched for SS in Atlanta....

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Where are Krol and Abad?

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

Papelbon in for a non-save for Cholly. Nats need to go to the "A" bullpen here. No time for screwing around with Staymen.

BigCat said...

Stra is just shaking his head I bet.

David Proctor said...

Okay, this is really pissing me off.

jeffwx said...

yes...somebody wake up uncle davey

What had to happen to pull Stammen?

Ray knight knows hitters not pitcher

Stammen is working on giving this away.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Stammen has given up 5 hits... Really????

I'm not sure I would use Storen here either... What about Abad?

David Proctor said...

Storen with 2 men on. This is a recipe for disaster.

jeffwx said...

ineffective stammen again.

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

On Davey, he just wants to keep bringing Stammen out there. While nothing was hit hard in that inning, he just didn't get the job done.

Holden Baroque said...

I'm not saying Ramos should have had that, I'm just thinking maybe it's time to re-think his mitt endorsement deal and consider Mizuno, or somebody else.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Abad and Krol are persona non grada. I called for krol to start the 7th and Stammen was davey's choise. Not sure what Stammen's problem.

BigCat said...

Yeah, where is Krol?

David Proctor said...

I understand Davey putting Stammen in for the first inning, but Stammen got hit around. I don't understand why Davey put him in for the second inning when Krol hasn't worked in a week.

jeffwx said...

agree...what do you have krol for

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

Sec3, new mitt needed.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

He drops a number

David Proctor said...

Wow I didn't realize Storen had standed 7 of 9 inherited baserunners. Maybe this makes a tad more sense.

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

Papelbon starts the 9th with an 11 pitch walk.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Stammen has been ineffective for a while.... I wonder what is going on???

Will he have a phantom injury when Mattheus returns...

Nice K Storen...

JaneB said...

Man I thought our seven runs would be all that's needed. Good thing they're piling on.

This game is LONG today! Usually Stras pitches fast. Just checked the score and the game is still going!

Hold them here, bull pen! Please!

Holden Baroque said...

It looks from here like Ramos is using a relatively smaller mitt, but maybe that's just how it looks on a big guy.

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

That took intestinal fortitiude to throw Headley a changeup on 2-2 when Headly knew it was fastball ;)

Secret wasian man said...

I'm here. Couldn't hold on any more. Unreal that we are all on the edge of our seats. STAMMen is awful. Davey is worse for bringing him back out. Ughhhh

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

Smatt1001 said...

Whew...glad T-Mo was able to pick that one up.

David Proctor said...

Okay, if we're going to bash Storen for his bad outings (and he deserved it), we have to give him credit. 2 men on, no out in a big point in the game and he gets out of it.

jeffwx said...

storen dominated yesterday and today just like a beatles album

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Good job Drew... I just got back in the house... Can't wait to see how we scored 11 runs...

How was SS today? I'm assuming 3/4 runs are becuz of Stammen?

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

Stammen gets out today with only 2 earned. Storen with a heck of a stopper appearance. Very impressive.

Those that doubt he couldn't be a closer somewhere else, I think that just showed you what Storen really has.

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

In other great news, Barves lost and Papelbon was used for a long inning throwing 25 pitches.

that kind of tension in a 'blowout' win is unnecessary. why was davey using stammen in second inning? hope reporters ask him that.

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

Lead in the NL East is now 4 1/2 games! Believers believe!

Holden Baroque said...

OK, I checked several pictures, and it looks like Ramos is using a more-or-less standard Wilson A2K. So if it's not customized, it's not particularly small. Must be just in comparison to the Buffalo behind it.

Braves fans are going nuts after this loss. They face the #4 and #5 guys of the Marlins and miss Nolasco on the start of their series tomorrow.

Holden Baroque said...

MNF, I think Davey maybe is saving Abad and Krol because he likes them for an upcoming tough series, rather than banishing them. Shouldn't have had to bring Storen in, really, but not much choice there.

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

Carp and FP calling K-lip the MVP of the Nats bullpen after Ray Knight in the pre-game called Stammen the MVP of the Nats pitching staff.

Can the MASN guys get on the same page. Maybe Ray was confused and thought he was interviewing Tyler Clippard earlier today. ;)

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Out 1.... Come on Clip... Give me 2 more...

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

Sec3, he gave K-lip the outside so at least the widening zone appears both ways for late in the game.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Did Werth get injured? Is Bernadina playing Rf for him?

David Proctor said...

Clippard and Soriano are co-MVPs of the bullpen. Both have been great all year.

Holden Baroque said...

He is now, Mrs B. And just in time.

David Proctor said...

Werth isn't injured. The game was a blowout when Davey took him out. Then it got closer.

Smatt1001 said...

MrsB: It was a double switch...and we had much much more of a lead when it happened. Nothing to suggest Werth was hurt

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Sofa - it was just a double switch?

I will watch this game for the beginning later on...

Thanks...

Holden Baroque said...

Oh, and did I mention it's probably 105 on the field for both halves of the inning? Heat expands things, including strike zones.

Several with heat exhaustion....no need for that in 2013.
Open up Stars and Stripes, give away water, when heat index is above 95.

You'll get more fans and reduce the risk of heat related illness from the out of shape 40 and 50 somethings sucking up the 9 dollar beers further
maximizing their risk of dehydration.

MrsB,Denard Span had Avery good game, starting with a leadoff hit, and scoring in the first. He is being criticized for his bunt today. I think that he should keep bunting. The rest of his game seems to be coming together. He's a good blunter that hasn't been executing perfectly.I say keep keep bunting until you regain perfect form.

I was really happy for a lot of guys today, but none more than Ryan Zimmerman. His grand slam was just great, and it was super to see him break a big smile!

Drew said...

Someone has tweaked the list of the Nats' top 20 prospects on the team's home page for its minor league affiliates. It mainly removes Rendon -- presumably up for good -- moves others up a peg and adds Ian Krol at No. 20.

The top five are now Goodwin, Giolito, Cole, Michael Taylor and Karns.

I still don't get the fascination with Taylor. Yes, he's stolen about 30 bases, but he never has had a high on base percentage or hit for power.

I obviously could be wrong, but right now I think Purke, Matt Skole, Robbie Ray and Taylor Jordan have better chances to be big leaguers with impact.

Brandon Miller the slugger drafted out of Samford in 2012, is lurking at No. 17. He hit a grand slam today in the first inning for Hagerstown. He has 16 homers and more than 50 RBIs in 81 games.
