Mark Zuckerman / NATS INSIDER |
With left-hander Robbie Erlin on the mound for the Padres, Davey Johnson is giving Adam LaRoche a rare day off. In his place is Tyler Moore, who starts only his third game of the season at first base. The rest of the lineup stays the same, with Wilson Ramos back in there behind the plate. (Another interesting note: The Nats this season are 11-5 when Ramos plays, 34-37 when he doesn't.)
Stephen Strasburg, owner of a 1.29 ERA over his last nine starts, gets the ball this afternoon against his hometown team. He hasn't surrendered more than two earned runs in any of those nine outings, quite a stretch of dominance for the right-hander.
I'm off today, taking a quick breather before heading to Philadelphia tomorrow. Enjoy the conversation...

«Oldest ‹Older 201 – 400 of 454 Newer› Newest»Stras plunks a third batter. Wondering if he's done after this one.
Though looked like a k the pitch before.
I guess Stammen comes in to see if he can do it.
We're not going to get no stinkin' wild card, Manassas. We're going to win the division.
Braves coming bak.7-3. 4 straight hits.
Phillies bullpen falling apart.
im close to pulling Stra
Can't believe nobody was up in the bullpen.
Come on Stras, stop putting men on base for free. A solo shot can't hurt you up by 8. A grand slam can.
There bullpen is poor.
JUpton swings through 3 balls to K with 2 on and 1 out. 7-3 game
Stra is gassed. Go get em
Braves 2 outs me first second 2 outs lefty coming to face Freeman
this is why we need to not have sunday day games in Washington in the summer. 4:30 pm starts for July and August
Alright Stras. Far from your best outing, but you survived.
And as FP would say, there goes the Quality Start.
Good job Stras minimizing damage.
Get away days, that will not happen.
Bastardo K's Freddie Freeman for the 3rd out.
Antonio Bastard-o strikes out Freeman 7-3
Davey needs to threaten publicly to sit Bryce more often. 3-3 with a walk.
Dang, there goes another of my posts!! WTH?
Davey knew exactly what he was doing. As I've said, Davey deserved criticism at times for his in-game management, but when it comes to managing people, there's nobody better.
Here's mad Freddie Freeman: https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-9TC07BMjkNA/UdnIgXKKbuI/AAAAAAAABWg/zbnFRx6fTS8/s500/freeman.gif
Double switch shark to right batting 9th stammen bat 5th
Actually Stra was pretty nasty, but for whatever reason, when he gets it up, even at 96-97, they hammer it. That little guy went upper deck on him. Must be a deception thing with him. He's falling off to first base with that shoulder flying open, so the hitters see that fastball very well
So Manassas.....what do you say about Eck now?
Craig Stammen steps in and the 1st pitch on cue is a BP fastball.
Why is Stammen getting hit so badly lately? I like Davey putting him in here because it's low leverage. But...
wow Zim. Moore almost called for a fair catch. But its an out Good play
David, just getting too much plate and lack of movement on his pitches.
Read my comments pre-game as Ray Knight interviewed him. He called Stammen the pitching MVP. Not sure what game Ray is watching.
That's a pick that LaRoche makes 10/10 times.
mlb.com is acting up again.
LaRoche makes that play almost every time.
They're teeing off on Stammen. Put in Krol.
How many errors has LaRoche saved this year.
Hitting Stamnen hard again.
Then they must open the stars and stripes club when gametime heat index is above 95.
a 4 pm start gives them plenty of time to getaway.
2 quick runs. 1 earned and 1 unearned. Sheesh.
Hmmmmm....we aren't home yet. our pen has been shaky as of late
Stammen needs to get out of this funk.
Lets score a few more in the bottom 7
Desi gets the error on a ball that ALR makes look routine. Not a big Tyler man fan at either LF or at first.
This is getting much closer then it should be.
Then they must open the stars and stripes club when game time heat index is above 95.
And you have plenty of time to get away with a 4 pm sunday start unless one team travels to the other coast.
Go Krol and then let Clip have the 9th
Middle relief recently have struggled
Bastardo puts 2 Braves on with 1 out.
Strasburg hit three batters today but not one of them moved a muscle to try and get out the way of the pitches. None of them were that far inside in my view.
Is it my imagination but have ballplayers stopped trying to avoid getting hit?
I don't miss Tyler Moore being in the lineup...
Ramos joins the hit parade!
Ball right down the middle and poor TyMo doesnt come close to hitting it.
Then The Buffalo doubles.
Who is the long man for Monday if the Nats need one?
Terrible AB for Shark
Goon guys timing and pitch selection is terrible.
ohlendorf
Phillies escape again. 7-3 and on to the bottom of the 8th.
ohlendorf can get you 2 and so can Krol
Shark looked like me.
Harp goin deep
I think most of you know I try and stay positive. Does any other team in the majors have a bench as offensively weak as ours?
DC is the most humid city with an outdoor MLB statium... Heat indices higher than atlanta in July/Aug given the proximity of the Bay.
Need more spray fans, comfort stations. late starts from after the 4th until Mid August.
and better pizza
I'm guessing KC, Houston, and the Cubs, right off the top, sjm.
Nats have had 3 innings with bases loaded and end up 1-3 with the big Granny.
jeffwx, worse than St. Louis? That's pretty bad.
No...the one advantage the braves have over us is their bench.
Good to pick up a bat to give the outfield a break, esp Werth.
agree sjm. Shark and Tracy are almost automatic outs these days. And Moore ain't DiMaggio either
Venable playing slightly left of center mad that catch fairly easily.
Ugh. Stammen still in.
Ohlebdorf will have to go 3
DP, who would prefer to have mopping up with a 5-run lead?
st. louis is bad, but they used to get more cold frontal passages and they are not close to a heat source such as the bay where water temps reach the upper 80s. Pave the bay.
Bad play by Moore. Rendon had it.
Stammen slower than TyMoore.
Stammen even not fielding his position. Pathetic.
Stammen gotta stay down. Then his ball moves. Up....its meat HERE WE GOOOO!!
Defense sub. LaRoche for T-Mo?
I can understand one or even two good field no-hit types but we really have four no hit types and only Bernadina is what I consider above ave. in the field.
Get Stammen out of there now!
Stammen hasn't been good since he pitched for SS in Atlanta....
Where are Krol and Abad?
Papelbon in for a non-save for Cholly. Nats need to go to the "A" bullpen here. No time for screwing around with Staymen.
Stra is just shaking his head I bet.
Okay, this is really pissing me off.
yes...somebody wake up uncle davey
What had to happen to pull Stammen?
Ray knight knows hitters not pitcher
Stammen is working on giving this away.
Stammen has given up 5 hits... Really????
I'm not sure I would use Storen here either... What about Abad?
Storen with 2 men on. This is a recipe for disaster.
ineffective stammen again.
On Davey, he just wants to keep bringing Stammen out there. While nothing was hit hard in that inning, he just didn't get the job done.
I'm not saying Ramos should have had that, I'm just thinking maybe it's time to re-think his mitt endorsement deal and consider Mizuno, or somebody else.
Abad and Krol are persona non grada. I called for krol to start the 7th and Stammen was davey's choise. Not sure what Stammen's problem.
Yeah, where is Krol?
I understand Davey putting Stammen in for the first inning, but Stammen got hit around. I don't understand why Davey put him in for the second inning when Krol hasn't worked in a week.
agree...what do you have krol for
Sec3, new mitt needed.
He drops a number
Wow I didn't realize Storen had standed 7 of 9 inherited baserunners. Maybe this makes a tad more sense.
Papelbon starts the 9th with an 11 pitch walk.
Stammen has been ineffective for a while.... I wonder what is going on???
Will he have a phantom injury when Mattheus returns...
Nice K Storen...
Man I thought our seven runs would be all that's needed. Good thing they're piling on.
This game is LONG today! Usually Stras pitches fast. Just checked the score and the game is still going!
Hold them here, bull pen! Please!
It looks from here like Ramos is using a relatively smaller mitt, but maybe that's just how it looks on a big guy.
That took intestinal fortitiude to throw Headley a changeup on 2-2 when Headly knew it was fastball ;)
I'm here. Couldn't hold on any more. Unreal that we are all on the edge of our seats. STAMMen is awful. Davey is worse for bringing him back out. Ughhhh
Krol finally stands up.
If Stammen covered 1st on the grounder this inning probably is already over.
Stra breathing easier. Not out of woods yet
Imagine my surprise.
Did that kid really have a Braves hat on... Lol.. His parents are totally teaching him the wrong thing...
I can't talk though... Went to the Phil's/dodgers game and had my Nats shirt on...
donofria is getting gassed
Come on Drew.... You can do it?!?!?!!!

Oh, you of little faith!
Good job Storen
Whew...glad T-Mo was able to pick that one up.
Okay, if we're going to bash Storen for his bad outings (and he deserved it), we have to give him credit. 2 men on, no out in a big point in the game and he gets out of it.
storen dominated yesterday and today just like a beatles album
Good job Drew... I just got back in the house... Can't wait to see how we scored 11 runs...
How was SS today? I'm assuming 3/4 runs are becuz of Stammen?
Stammen gets out today with only 2 earned. Storen with a heck of a stopper appearance. Very impressive.
Those that doubt he couldn't be a closer somewhere else, I think that just showed you what Storen really has.
Phillies win.
Whew thanks drew and Ian. I go clipp in the 9 th. very ner ous right now.
Phillies win
In other great news, Barves lost and Papelbon was used for a long inning throwing 25 pitches.
that kind of tension in a 'blowout' win is unnecessary. why was davey using stammen in second inning? hope reporters ask him that.
Lead in the NL East is now 4 1/2 games! Believers believe!
OK, I checked several pictures, and it looks like Ramos is using a more-or-less standard Wilson A2K. So if it's not customized, it's not particularly small. Must be just in comparison to the Buffalo behind it.
Why isn't Davey using Krol or Abad... Is it a L/R thing?
Phillie win. Lets go guys.
Add a couple runs
just like a beatles album
Please Please Me? Rubber Soul?
Chad Tracy is a waste of a roster spot... *sigh*
Mrs b I will never understand Daveys use of bullpen. He never uses matchups.. Hey Tracy just popped out. Huh unusual.
No one will be rooting harder for D Haren than me... Surprise, surprise I know... But while he dawns a Nationals uniform, I hope he comes in a dominates...
MrsB, that is funny.
What's the over under on a 123 ninth. I'm out of rolaids.
Well, if it dawns on me to don a Nats shirsey, do I tuck now?
As I saidcearlier Abad and Jrol areapparently persona non grada. Could Stammen go PNG for a few days and bring the lefties in.
All of a sudden on Rendon the strike zone widens. Would have liked a few more runs.
Stuffin sofa.... This dang iPad auto corrects all the time... I hadn't even realized it...
#dumbazzme
Nationals pinch hitting ba = .175 by far the worst in the NL with a league average of .230
I think Jesse Crain sounds even better than it did in the morning.
Well, rookie at the plate, four run lead, game already pushing 4:30 ... not right, but not surprising, Ghost.
by comparison, Atlanta leads the national league with .296 average.
We can do better
Braves fans are going nuts after this loss. They face the #4 and #5 guys of the Marlins and miss Nolasco on the start of their series tomorrow.
MNF, I think Davey maybe is saving Abad and Krol because he likes them for an upcoming tough series, rather than banishing them. Shouldn't have had to bring Storen in, really, but not much choice there.
Carp and FP calling K-lip the MVP of the Nats bullpen after Ray Knight in the pre-game called Stammen the MVP of the Nats pitching staff.
Can the MASN guys get on the same page. Maybe Ray was confused and thought he was interviewing Tyler Clippard earlier today. ;)
Out 1.... Come on Clip... Give me 2 more...
Sec3, he gave K-lip the outside so at least the widening zone appears both ways for late in the game.
Did Werth get injured? Is Bernadina playing Rf for him?
Clippard and Soriano are co-MVPs of the bullpen. Both have been great all year.
He is now, Mrs B. And just in time.
Werth isn't injured. The game was a blowout when Davey took him out. Then it got closer.
MrsB: It was a double switch...and we had much much more of a lead when it happened. Nothing to suggest Werth was hurt
Sofa - it was just a double switch?
I will watch this game for the beginning later on...
Thanks...
Oh, and did I mention it's probably 105 on the field for both halves of the inning? Heat expands things, including strike zones.
Nats win! NL East deficit now 4 games! Nats winning streak at 4 games! #EatFace
I'm not going to criticize Johnson for this game.I'm also not going to defend Johnson for this game. What I'm going to do is enjoy this win. We're now four games back. WooooooHooooo!!! (per MicheleS)
Coach sjm308, you getting any faith back yet?Are you fall travel plan tix refundable?
Game was closer than it should've been, but a win is a win.
Woooo
Hoooo
TM Michele
Nats win!!! Nats win!!!
Yes.....
4 game lead... Time to sweep the Padres outta town!!!!
Whew thanks Clipp. 4 games back
Joe Seamhead at 5:08, good post and agreed.
I'm talking about the fans sofa. Players can handle it.
Several with heat exhaustion....no need for that in 2013.
Open up Stars and Stripes, give away water, when heat index is above 95.
More comfort stations...water sprays, later starts.
You'll get more fans and reduce the risk of heat related illness from the out of shape 40 and 50 somethings sucking up the 9 dollar beers further
maximizing their risk of dehydration.
Winning, totally, feels good... Seems like Span had a good day against a lefty too huh???
Really good job Nationals!!!
Nats on the warpath, braves fans.
The baseball season is a long and winding road.
but good day, sunshine, and to all those here, there and everywhere...
Great winning sweeeeeeeep
Duh, winning! (Wait, did I just use that? Yes. Yes, I did.) WTG, Nats! Clip and Storen were looking good. Not sure what's up with Stammen lately.
Hat tip to FP for the Enrico Pallazo reference.
Also, hat tip to the Phils for today, but as for tomorrow, it's on!
And Clip actually had a stress free inning.
Here's the thing. Could we really take this weak hitting bench into the playoffs. Tracy is A-1 done...as Matt Stairs was. Shark is a non factor. Why did we grant Micah his release. He's gotta be better than Tracy
I believe in yesterday, jeff, but this series could be our ticket to ride. :-)
bc, .170 now ph ba won't do it.
Are they thinking the new espi will replace Tracy.
FP put it best..objects in the rear view mirror are closer than they appear 3 verse s
although Phillies did win 2 of 3 verse Braves
I'm going to go with Twist and Shout, although for the Padres it's probably more like Help!

We need to just keep winning 2/3. A sweep was great, but 2/3 is the goal. We've got Haren, Jordan and Gio going against the Phillies. 2/3 might be tough. Hopefully Haren fixed whatever was wrong.
I think it's a four game series.
No, wait. That's Miami. I'm sooo confused.
I'm the new Mick only positive posts ... I hope Haren is ready...Stammen is a concern now, wonder if he is hurt?
good one, nats1a....I believe in yesterday but tomorrow never knows
Mick, do you remember our discussion on the lead in the NL East last week. Looking good!
phillies is four game.
I sure do Ghost!
well, mick, la,la,la,la, life goes on.
all 3 of our better starters can be available for asg if needed. that would be nice.
Here's one for you 19 for me, cause we're the Nats, man...
MrsB,Denard Span had Avery good game, starting with a leadoff hit, and scoring in the first. He is being criticized for his bunt today. I think that he should keep bunting. The rest of his game seems to be coming together. He's a good blunter that hasn't been executing perfectly.I say keep keep bunting until you regain perfect form.
I was really happy for a lot of guys today, but none more than Ryan Zimmerman. His grand slam was just great, and it was super to see him break a big smile!
Good one, Joe.
Also loved the Zim slam.
I hate auto correct!
I loved Ryan's reaction in the dugout when the fans wanted a curtain call. He was like "eh might as well"
I missed most of today's game traveling, but
Life goes on within you and without you, as George said.
As the Nats cut the Braves' lead to 4 games, they also cut the Reds' lead to 4 games for the second wild card.
After all those weeks of anemic hitting, the Nats' run differential is down to minus 10.
GYFNG!
Denard might be a good blunter, but I meant to say that he was a good bunter and that he had a very good game.sheesh...
Great day, great series. In 313 we got to do the cheer ELEVEN times. Thanks to you guys in 312 for joining in so well today--also with pure V-O-T-E VOTE VOTE VOTE cheer for Desi mid-game. Section 314 may have been going strong too, but I was waving my hat on the 312 side today
Good job Nats, good job fans!
Mick - do you realize since you became "positive Mick" we have had a nice run. I credit this all to you!
Seam head - no refunds but I will take credit for them winning with my bone head move and eat crow with pleasure
Anytime we score 11runs in a ball game it should be an easy win and not make it into a hard day's night.
Well, Strasburg at times today was throwing them here, there, and everywhere....
Someone has tweaked the list of the Nats' top 20 prospects on the team's home page for its minor league affiliates. It mainly removes Rendon -- presumably up for good -- moves others up a peg and adds Ian Krol at No. 20.
The top five are now Goodwin, Giolito, Cole, Michael Taylor and Karns.
I still don't get the fascination with Taylor. Yes, he's stolen about 30 bases, but he never has had a high on base percentage or hit for power.
I obviously could be wrong, but right now I think Purke, Matt Skole, Robbie Ray and Taylor Jordan have better chances to be big leaguers with impact.
Brandon Miller the slugger drafted out of Samford in 2012, is lurking at No. 17. He hit a grand slam today in the first inning for Hagerstown. He has 16 homers and more than 50 RBIs in 81 games.
4 GB. That is all.
True that. Happily, he was able to get by with a little help from his friends. They were able to come together as a team and win, thus avoiding misery and the need to say "I'm a loser." Will I watch them tomorrow, you might ask? I will. Not sure what I'll do for the rest of the evening, but no doubt we can work it out.

When asked if he's feeling better at the plate, Harper said "I’ll tell you in three days after I face Lannan, Hamels and Lee." #Nats
I'm sure the Padres pitching staff appreciates that...lol.
Wow...went to a Nats blog and a beatles sing along broke out.
Try that 313...let's mix it up out there...let it all hang down, like D. Span, and the Stras and the runs....instant karmas gonna get you, 313...all right.
You guys are going to restart the Eleanor Rigby riffs:
Henry Rodriguez
picks up the rice but he can't
get it close to the plate.
Dinner is late...
I have noticed that since Werth came back I feel fine, but I have to admit it getting better, it's getting better all the time...
I was a bit miffed Davey brought Stammen back out, but I see this subject was well covered in the thread. Glad Stras gets the win. GYFNG!!!
SonnyG10, to paraphrase Davey on Stammen "He's been snakebit the past few weeks. I had to pull him to change the momentum."
That 1st pitch double was a bad pitch. The rest is BABIP lucky/unlucky and the fact Stammen snakebit himself by not covering 1st is his own fault.
Lucky for him Storen didn't allow any of those inherited runners to score.
Well, for Danny it's going to be a long and winding road, but Dan Haren? We need you to Get back! Get back! Get back to where you once belonged!
Mick, I like drinking the Kool-Aid with you! It's a lot more fun than drinking from cups that are 1/2 empty ;)
Just think if the Nats could have won that Tuesday game vs the Brewers the Nats would be 3 back.
These next 4 against the Phillies will be a dog fight.
Ghost said;

And we told him before, you can't do that!
Phillies have Hamels and Lee both pitching. Tough lefties, although Hamels is having a bad year.
