Game 101: Pirates at Nats

Mark Zuckerman / NATS INSIDER
Davey Johnson hasn't been given his regulars very many days off lately, certainly not with the Nationals struggling so mightily to score runs. But there's no question a few guys could probably use a breather, so tonight two of the biggest names from the lineup are sitting: Bryce Harper and Ian Desmond.

We'll find out Davey's reasoning in each case. It's not all that surprising to see Harper get a day off against a tough left-hander in Francisco Liriano. But it is surprising to see Desmond sitting against this pitcher. Again, we'll see what the reason is in each case.

The benching of those two leads to some other changes, most notably Anthony Rendon sliding over to shortstop for his first career start at that position. Steve Lombardozzi will be at second base. Scott Hairston, meanwhile will be leading off and playing left field.

Oh yeah, and Stephen Strasburg is on the mound, trying to stop this five-game losing streak. Updates to come, so please check back...

7:08 p.m. — And we're underway on an absolutely gorgeous night for baseball in the District. 81 degrees and low humidity on July 24?! I don't know what we did to deserve this! Stephen Strasburg starts off Starling Marte with a fastball for strike one.

7:13 p.m. — That's an 11-pitch top of the first for Strasburg, who struck out Marte on a 97 mph fastball and then got Neil Walker and Andrew McCutchen to fly out. He's going to need to be dominant today, unless he wants to count on run support, which he probably doesn't want to do.

7:24 p.m. — The good news: Scott Hairston drew a leadoff walk. The bad news: Anthony Rendon, Ryan Zimmerman and Jayson Werth couldn't even advance him past first base. Such is the state of the Nats lineup these days. Scoreless after one.

7:37 p.m. — Strasburg threw a 96 mph fastball right down Broadway to Pedro Alvarez, and the result was, well, quite predictable. Alvarez destroyed the pitch, launching a laser over the fence in right-center to lead off the top of the second. That's his 26th homer of the season and it puts the Nats in a 1-0 hole.

7:52 p.m. — Strasburg isn't holding back tonight. He's got four strikeouts through three innings and dialed it up to 98 mph to get Marte swinging for the second time tonight. Five in a row now retired by the right-hander. Still 1-0 Pirates heading to the bottom of the third.

8:00 p.m. — Three innings down and the Nats are still looking for their first hit off Liriano. They really haven't come that close yet, either, aside from maybe Zimmerman's flyball to deep left in the bottom of the first. Still 1-0 after three.

8:26 p.m. — Five strong innings from Strasburg, who has allowed only Alvarez's earlier home run. But it's not going to mean much of anything if his teammates don't get a hit off Liriano. Which they have yet to do. 1-0 heading to the bottom of the fifth.

8:31 p.m. — And that's a five-pitch bottom of the fifth for Liriano, who is just carving up this depleted Nats lineup. He's issued two walks, but that's it so far for the lefty. Seventy-five pitches. Nats still trail 1-0 heading to the sixth.

8:38 p.m. — Can't fault Strasburg tonight. He's been fantastic, striking out eight through six innings and not allowing a hit since the second. He's at 91 pitches, and he remains in line for the loss with Liriano dealing. 1-0 heading to the bottom of the sixth.

8:52 p.m. — Good news: The no-hitter has been broken up. Rendon hit a hot smash to the left of third base, and Alvarez couldn't hang on after a diving stop. Zimmerman then drew a walk, putting two on with two out for Werth. The bad news: Werth struck out looking at a 1-2 pitch on the outside corner. I don't know if it was a strike, but I'll say this: It was identical to Liriano's previous pitch, which had been called a ball by Mike Estabrook. Big leaguers don't expect umpires to be perfect. They do expect them to be consistent, which Estabrook clearly wasn't there. Oh, by the way, the Nats are now 6 for their last 79 with runners in scoring position. Is that good? Still 1-0 after six.

9:02 p.m. — And Liriano goes right back to carving up the Nats, retiring the side in a very quick bottom of the seventh. So it remains 1-0 as Strasburg takes the mound for the eighth inning for only the third time in his career (all this season).

9:08 p.m. — That'll do it for Strasburg, who pitched an absolute gem: 8 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 12 K, 118 pitches. And he's in line to take the loss. Still 1-0 heading to the bottom of the eighth.

9:21 p.m. — Hey, the Nats got another hit! Their second of the night, as Lombardozzi singles to center to lead off the bottom of the eighth. And that's all they got. Kurt Suzuki, pinch-hitting for Strasburg, put down a sacrifice bunt, moving Lombardozzi to second base. Liriano then struck out Hairston looking at a pitch at the knees. Clint Hurdle summoned lefty Justin Wilson to face Rendon, and he got Rendon to pop up to end the inning. So, if you've lost track, the Nats are now 6 for their last 81 with runners in scoring position. Still 1-0 going to the ninth.

9:43 p.m. — And this just turned into a 4-0 game in the ninth. Drew Storen and Fernando Abad combined to allow three runs and turn this into basically an insurmountable lead for the Pirates. Nats down to their last three outs now.

10:00 p.m. — It's over. Nats lose 4-2 after Werth crushes his fifth homer in four days, their sixth straight loss and 11th in 13 games. They're 5 games under .500.

haha old Span is gonna be huffin and puffin for 5 minutes!!

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

Good to see Denard get his jersey dirty! I know he says he doesn't dive but I will take a sliding catch!

Jane Elizabeth said...

So you are saying he has better speed than Vince Coleman and Jose Reyes? I severely doubt that, but check the career records. One thing we know is that Span can't steal an important base to save his life. Reyes and Coleman routinely go to 3rd after being walked or getting a dink hit.

NatsFanSinceStart said...

Stras is cruising .. keep em away from Rendon, Stas -- although he already knows that, doesn't he?

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Just showed pitch track and 4 strikes. 1 would have been a ball had Werth not swung.

Eugene in Oregon said...

"Is 13 infield hits supposed to be great or something? Span has only better than average speed. Keep deluding yourself that he is Vince Coleman...."
=======================
Never suggested 13 is great; you wrote 'never' and I simply pointed out that 13 hits is 13 greater than 'never'. 'Never' is hyperbole. Thirteen is the real number.

Never suggested he was Vince Coleman or Jose Reyes. As I pointed out the other day, Denard Span is pretty much an average hitter for a CF and lead-off hitter, minus a bit of power.

Jane Elizabeth said...

Strasburg keeps giving up a run or two whenever he pitches. You can't expect to win games when you give up runs.....

SCNatsFan said...

I don't think you are in the LOD if you thought this team was going to the World Series and are upset we are crowding 4th place. And I don't think you are in the LOD if you are upset with the horrendous offense and lack of emotion this team has shown this year. Doesn't mean you don't love the team any less but you hate the results.

If you are a Nats fan and you are satisfied with this performance then God bless you.

NL Overall .252, RISP .250

But, more relevant to what I was saying -- the Nats are 13th in overall batting and -- hmm -- I can't seem to find how they rank in RISP compared to the rest of the league . . . .

Jane Elizabeth said...

Look who is here posting: the true baseball fans who like the Nats. The "positive thinking" people aren't baseball fans. They are Nats fans only, which a lot of people on here seem to think is a positive. That is garbage to me. I study other teams like the Cardinals and Reds and I respect their history and I enjoy watching them when they play beautiful baseball.

I am a baseball fan first and a Nats' fan second.

BigCat said...

Why not laroche bunt? Pitiful

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

If ALR is goingvlook that poor against Lariano he should just stick the bat out and hit to left.

NatsFanSinceStart said...

I always felt labeling people "Legion of Doom" was just a cheesy way of shutting up fans not happy with one thing or another. People who I've seen excoriate others for being LOD members are now far more negative than many the LODer's the chastised. Some are here tonight. I think it's funny and part of the entertainment of this crazy forum.

Still, I can't decide: are most people here under 25 or over 65? I can't make up my mind.

But you admit you knew I was engaging in hyperbole, so I guess we aren't disputing anything at all. I just really wanted a Vince Coleman kind of guy and instead we got a guy who is decent but nothing more and we have already had that in centerfield many times since Wilkerson left.

mick said...

wonder if Davey will blame Stras for giving up the homer

Jane Elizabeth said...

In between.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

I believe it was 12th i remember it was 26th in the majors

Jane Elizabeth said...

One think that I explained to my son is that when your team falls out of it, you can still enjoy the beauty of the game. This is a nicely played game for the most part. We can't win every year.

mick said...

Stras has been awesome

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

Love the way Stras is pitching tonight. Loved the high 4 seamer K

SCNatsFan said...

Even though he said he won't quit you wonder how much longer Davey puts up with this team. He looks horrid in interviews. You know this season is eating him up and I hate to see that.

NatsFanSinceStart said...

funny how people are just realizing what type of player Span is. Are you just noticing now? Or did you know all along but went along with the crowd thinking Pollyannish kinda thoughts?

Span is an above average CF, contact hitter, but lacks gap and homerun power -- gets triples, but must pull the ball in order to do it. Like to get the ball in the air, when his type should be hitting it on the ground or line drives -- slow reflexes prevent him from being a good basestealer, and a low obp has him turning out to be a poor leadoff guy. But this was readily known before we made the deal -- if anyone cared to look at the time

mick said...

agreed Ghost

Jane Elizabeth said...

We all wax back and forth, but one thing that stats guys don't stress enough is inter-year variation. Go back to the early 70's when teams kept the same core for years and teams would have surprising variance in record, but maybe less so in run differential....

Jane Elizabeth said...

At least, with 12 K's, Stras is looking like the guy we thought we had. That is a huge positive.

mick said...

can we score 1 freaking run??????

NatsFanSinceStart said...

Davey's MO: excitement to begin with -- ego sets in -- clashes with management -- makes public comments of displeasure -- bad blood develops -- Davey is gone on October 1 -- souring another relationship with yet another team

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Except for one pitch about 6 inches more inside than Ramos asked for Strasburg nearly perfect. So far that mistake is the difference.

The few Luriano errors were not hit. Nit sure Stras even had another close to a mistake.

mick said...

I see braves are up 6-0

NatsFanSinceStart said...

well, I'll be darn: we got a hit!!

Jane Elizabeth said...

The strange thing NatsFanSinceStart, is that I have looked at various Nats blogs and they were overwhelmingly in favor of the Span acquisition, so that must be said in favor of Rizzo. Boswell held back more than most and said that the Span and Haren deals were uncertain but probably worth trying.

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

If you are going to bunt, why not use JZim???? I don't get this guy.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Who is a better bunter Suzuki or Stras? Going to bunt let stras do it.

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

Sorry Hairston, that was a strike.

Secret wasian man said...

Nice job Hairston you bum. That's was a strike all the way. My god we can't even go down swinging. Just disgusting.

SCNatsFan said...

Hairston is the only guy in North America who thought that was a ball.

NatsFanSinceStart said...

Swing the Bats, nationals -- swing the bats. This ump has been inconsistent all night -- you gotta bed ready to swing. Lets swing more and have to whine and moan less about a called third strike.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

,6 for 79

Missed a hittable pitch

So far we haven taken a backsrd K in both RISP situations.

Can guarentee almost no runners ever score on a called strikeout.

Bad approach again.

mick said...

hairston is a joke. what a worthless trade

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

You realize all Hairston has done so far is choke in key situations. Nothing bigger than the K with a man on 3rd and 2nd and 1 out.

Jane Elizabeth said...

See, that shows why it was wrong to condemn Harper based on the pitch track. You cannot trust those things. It was ridiculous to see people who didn't even watch that Miami game come on here the next day and say he was wrong about the ump's call. And that is without mentioning that there is no right/wrong in terms of umpiring. There is only consistency.....

JayB said...

Joe Seamhead said...

Scott, you're wrong. You must not go up looking for a walk.
Ghost, not just a position player, but your only backup catcher. Of course, that only would matter if we tie it up, etc.

mick said...

this joke of a player has 1 hit

Lerners bring back Morse and they are the heroes, along with the GM, whoever it may be.....

Candide said...

Team's season BA with RISP and 2 outs is below the Mendoza line.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

I fell one behind 6 for 81.

The three tonight havent hit a fair ball.

NatsFanSinceStart said...

I think it's time to bring in the voodoo dolls and sacrificing some chickens from to help this team.

Nats106 said...

Great pitching duel. Strasburg deserves better. One mistake pitch. Still don't get it-Hairston leading off. "Being due" is no reason to do that. Hell, I've been due to get a hit for 38 years.

Joe Seamhead said...

WODL, that was a strike to Scott Hairston. Good pitch, but you can't let that go by, just as Werth should not have watched his called third strike.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Exactly. Davey just not thinking. What happens if this goes into extra innings?

Nats106 said...

Because he's just mean. Turning into a vindictive old man

NatsFanSinceStart said...

Storen look shaky to me -- My feeling is Storen needs a new team and new start -- maybe a pitching coach that communicates well with him. I will celebrate if he gets out of the inning with no runs scored

Candide said...

MrsB, I think Davey figures this game is lost anyway, so let's give Storen a chance to have a good outing.

Secret wasian man said...

Heart of the lineup coming up in the bottom half. I promise it will be 3 quick outs. I blame this whole hitting swoon on Desmond, Zimm, harp and especially ALR. These guy are supposed to be the back bone. The vets, the leaders, the guys who make the $$$$$ and they just are absolutely pathetic at the plate.

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

MrsB, I have no problem with Storen to start the 9th but I look at it as a ROOGY and pull him when Walker steps in and go with a lefty.

Johnson wants to be done of Storen and I don't blame him.

David Proctor said...

Drew is a guy who I don't want to trade because his stuff is still nasty. The problem is he can't control it. Send him to AAA (he has options) for the rest of the year, let him work on his command and holding runners and then let him try out for a spot in Spring Training next year.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

mick said...

NatsFanSinceStart

exactly and that means he was too soft to begin with, a true pro, with heart and guts would have gotten over game 5

best thing for Nats is to get rid of his ass ASAP

The problem goes back to Davey managing 2012. Rizzo wanted him for interim manager in 2011. I don't think he wanted him for 2012, but Davey got his "juices" flowing, and how could Rizzo say, no?

THEN, Davey managed the team to 98 wins, a YEAR ahead of schedule and Rizzo had to put up with all the Stras shutdown nonsense, which would have been meaningless if the Nats had been an 85 win team, as was Rizzo's plan. 2014 was the year Rizzo had in mind for playoff contention.

Davey (IMO) did a good job keeping the team's head above water in the first half of 2012, with the injuries and only LaRoche hitting. When the team took off, all he had to do was tag along for the ride.

Now, what was Rizzo going to do? Davey is manager of the year, team won the Division, came within an inch of the NLDS...

Nats may finish last in East..."From first to Worst"

Why is the manager supposed to resign, Secret? Shouldn't Rizzo resign instead? These are his players....

You could have Strasburg bunt instead of Suzuki. And had him for the ninth. We may lose100 games.

let's be positive...come on you face of the franchise you, lets get something started

I'm not giving up hope... But good Lord... Come on Nats... I know you all are feeling worst than I am...

Please get it together.... It's not like y'all don't have the talent to do it...

No Daveys going anyway. Just go early. He makes all the wrong in game moves. He has all season. I like the guy personally but he has been awful. Just awful.

Jane Elizabeth said...

Storen gets the loss!

Ghost Of Steve M. said...

That would've been a Walk-off if you believe the Nats did that against Melancon and Storen held it at 1-0

again, the only winner and guy with heart comes thru again

Good goin Werth.... Man if those runs in the top 9th don't hurt...

Unh unh unh... This was a perfect night for a walk off....

I hope all of you people yelling for Abad the past few days have realized he's a sorry excuse for a major leaguer.

Thanks Storen.

now i really cant stand storen!!!!

So glad I opted not to go again tonight. Like I said before, I did my penance this past weekend. All 3 Dodger games. That's enough losing for one week.

Lol... I swear Ghost and I are not the same person... Lol...

NL - I think DJ uses Storen wrong...

Jane Elizabeth said...

I heard that they were going to fire the Nats' coach in charge of teaching players to catch the ball after Storen coughed up the ball Monday night.

NatsLady said...

I wish Werth would have done that against Liriano, then we would not have seen Storen.

Well, Ghost, you are right. You can't assume either Zim's hit or Werth's HR. But it is still unbelievably aggravating.

Calm down, you don't hate him. You are just angry at his lack of getting it done.

NatsLady, I agree with your 9:55 post.

Secret wasian man said...

Did Davey put our best pitcher in in the 9 th? No. Did he give the guys the best chance to win in the 9th? No. Did we score enough in the ninth to win the game? Yes. Thanks Davey. I will say every time WERTh homers the game is already lost. So although he is showing heart we need it when it really matters.

Nats106 said...

Blame Storen all you want. This is all on the manager for putting him in for this situation. I know Clippard worked last night, but his head is on straight. Really after Storen's last outing would ANYONE here put him in with the game on the line?

NatsLady said...

Ghost, you are right. I don 't know why I am even posting in a game thread....

But why can't we have one cleaning inning?

MrsB loves the Nats said...

Unknown - I'm beginning to wonder/think if Abad is getting the HRod treatment...

But if Abad goes, that leaves us with only 1 LHP... No good...

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

If we dont tie it Strasburg gets the loss. I explain this to you a couple weeks ago, you seem not to understand official scoring.

I did it for about 10 years so even Storen shouldlose he wont lose.

Davey is not a psychologist. Either the Stanford-grad gets his head together or have him ship out. I thought he was way too glib after blowing the NLDS and I see nothing that shows he was ready for this season....

That's just plain stupidity by Kolko. Melancon is pitching to Ryan Zimmerman if it's 1-0 and the rewind button ain't working to know the outcome.

Thank you Nats 106. Thank you. And people defend Davey. He Stinks. Can this guy Rizzo. NOW!!!!!!

NatsLady said...

I have seen Fredi put Kimbrell in in these situations, down one run, saw him do it at least twice. Both times Barves came back in the 9th and won it.

JayB said...

Bowden that is just the latest example of drew costing nats a game

Jane Elizabeth said...

It is discretionary, no?

I feel awful for Tim Hudson and Young Jr. Grateful we haven't had such an injury this year.

We can say we hate these guys, we can say all kinds of stuff about them. But hearing about Hudson and the comments about the ankle were all I needed to remember that these are PEOPLE, and that at any moment something awful can happen to them. And sometimes it does. And "awful" does not, in my estimation, include a jerk umpire with an inconsistent strike zone, or a formerly lights out pitcher losing confidence in themselves, or even being in 4th place. Though I can't say I'll be saying that if we land in 5th place.

Thank God that the Braves won! Otherwise, we would have been in fourth in the loss column.
