It's now been 24 hours since the window for major-league clubs to post bids on Yu Darvish expired, and during that time we've learned ... well, not a whole lot.
The Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters have yet to reveal which club won the bidding rights for Darvish, or even how many clubs submitted formal bids before yesterday's 5 p.m. EST deadline.
The Fighters officially have until Tuesday to make their decision, though reports both from the United States and Japan last night suggested an announcement would come this morning. That, of course, has yet to happen.
Here's what we do know: At least four major-league franchises submitted bids for the 25-year-old right-hander. The Yankees and Cubs are definitely involved. The Rangers and Blue Jays are likely involved. The Nationals have not revealed anything in the last day about their role in all this, but given GM Mike Rizzo's favorable impression of Darvish and the club's desire to add another front-line starting pitcher, most believe they submitted a bid.
Besides, if the Nationals weren't in the mix, why has there been nothing but silence coming out of 1500 South Capitol Street in the last 24 hours?
Once the winning bid is made public -- it's expected to reach or even surpass $50 million -- that club will have 30 days to negotiate a contract with Darvish. If no deal is reached during that month-long window, the pitcher will return to the Fighters for another season and the major-league club will get its entire posting fee back.

Since the bidding is over, why won't the Nats give an answer as to their bidding status? Is it none of our business?
Trust me, with the negative way things are going for the Nats in off-season deals, Darvish is going somewhere else.
Expect the Yankees to get it again. They had two motivations: (1) strengthen a shaky pitching staff; (2) make certain Boston or to a lesser degree Toronto didn't get him. (Reported to be why they went to the mattresses for Texiera; it wasn't that they needed him so much as they couldn't afford to let the Red Sox have him.) Tampa Bay, KC and Milwaukee will get rich off the luxury tax.
I suspect Nats would just as soon make agents, other teams speculate about how much cash the Lerners are comfortable spreading around. Might affect other potential acquisitions, including Aoki, Cespedes (though I don't think Cespedes is an answer to what the Nats need).

Find it hard to believe that a team would bid $50 million just for the right to spend another 50 to 75 million on a player. Guess that's competition, if some team has the money and doesn't care, can't do anything about that. There are no more bargains out there anymore so your better off to try and find the next Michael Morse at a cheap price.
My feeling is it's Toronto.

John Danks is a left-handed starter for the Chicago Whites Sox who made 27 starts in 2011: 7.13K/9 FIP 3.82, xFIP 3.79. He is 26 years old.
Using advanced stats (and I am of the opinion Rizzo, Johnson, and braintrust do) he looks extremely attractive trade possibility when compared to FA Edwin Jackson who also pitched for the white sox. AND Mr. Buherle! And he is again, a left-hander.

For most purposes one can assume that the tRAA has a direct correlation with a pitcher's WAR.
I hope they come in second, indicating their willingness to spend money but also putting them in a position not to get screwed again.
I was so excited when Yunesky Maya was signed a couple of years ago. I penciled him in for a 12-10, 3.90 kind of guy, a great #4 or #5 pitcher. Currently, his career record is 3-11, 5.52, 10.7/3.2/4.1
I was so upset when the Nationals didn't sign Aroldis Chapman but he has been moved to the bullpen by Cincinnati and though his career 6-3, 3.27 record isn't bad, his 6.5 walks per 9-innings can't be spun.
Though Darvish might become a great pitcher, we thought the same thing about Daisuke Matsuzaka who finished his career in the States with a 4.25 ERA.
2012 predictions/possibilities:
1--Stephen Strasburg: 10-5, 2.90
2--Jordan Zimmermann: 12-8, 3.10
3--John Lannan: 11-10, 3.90
4--???
5--Chien-Ming Wang: 9-7, 3.76
These starters would have 44 wins.
Add Joe Saunders (my favorite possibility right now), figure he could go 10-9, 3.85, and the starting five could end the season with 54 wins.
Add 4 wins for the guy who replaces Strasburg when he reaches his innings limit (and guys who cover for starters who miss starts/land on DL)and you get 58 wins
The Diamondback top six starters won 66 games and won their division. The Angles won 86 games and their top 6 starters won 63.
If they can land someone like Saunders (or Wandy Rodriguez), they are 4-5 wins away from at least being IN the pennant race.

Danks as a possibility reinforces the more consistent pattern ... getting past all the hoopla and subterfuge: an out-of-favor pitcher, still young, with great stuff who is left handed. He finished 8-12 yet still managed a 3.2 WAR. Jordan Zimmermann had a 3.4 WAR last year.
They should throw in Lannan to sweeten the deal. The ChiSox need someone to replace Buehrle.

My take was upon looking a apon's profile was someone just like you that read that and wasn't sure what it meant. Terse as always Klaw responds with white sox. KLaw is generally not a big rumor guy and he is a former MLB scout. His comment without any sarcastic barb leads me to believe that it may actually be a real possibility? He sure as heck isn't JimBo the uber rumor monger.

Its interesting that if the White Sox had traded Beckham for Dunn it would have been a wash. Beckham had almost as horrific year as Dunn with a 0.295 wOBA. The White Sox need hitting help. Their GM likes players like Destin Hood and perhaps even Tyler Moore. Still Kenny must feel like he got burned ... even though the Nats saved him an additional few months of embarrassment.

We didn't sign a first baseman for 10 years who will be 42 or older when his contract is up for more money than he is worth - Can you please explain where the negatives are in this off season? This is not the off season that is important neganon, its next year that we really need to make some moves and I am expecting we are not anywhere close to being done this year. Forget Yu!! MR and the Lerners can make better use of their $. Sign Oswald (take a chance) or Saunders instead. We have Milone and Peacock and others in the wings. We do need a CF. Sign Beltran if healthy. Back up plan move Werth and move the the "Kid" up in late June. With that we will contend in the NLE.
Guess Anglos will get some of my money when I go see Yu pitch; the guy is worth the price of admission. Very sad day for the Nats.
I've been thinking Blue Jays for the last week, but now that Bowden agrees with me, I'm going to change my guess to the Cubs.
