Wilson Ramos was kidnapped from his home in Venezuela this evening, according to multiple reports out of the Nationals catcher's home country.
According to the Venezuelan newspaper El Nacional, four gunmen approached Ramos at his home in the Santa Ines section of the city of Valencia and took him away. Family members have informed police but have not yet heard from the kidnappers.
The Tigres de Aragua, the Venezuelan team Ramos played for last winter, posted the news on its Twitter account this evening. Translated from Spanish, the tweet reads: "Unfortunately the news of the kidnapping of Wilson Ramos was confirmed, allegedly the same happened at his home in Valencia."
The Nationals have not yet confirmed the report, but a club official said the team is gathering information and will make a statement once it knows more.

Prayers are with the Ramos family, but the Nationals need to be on high alert and all over this situation. Hopefully their people on the ground in Venezuela are investigating this and not just leaving it to the locals. Hopefully Wilson comes back safely, not just because he's a good ball player but because he's a good kid.
This is terrible
I hope it's not up to the Lerners to provide the ransom money. Knowing them, they'll probably offer a couple of cheap tickets and a signage offer for 2012.
Obviously terrible news, but if there has to be a silver lining it ism that the kidnappers surely are in this for a ransom and a ransom will require Wilson's safe return. At least I' m going to tell myself that.
"they'll probably offer a couple of cheap tickets and a signage offer for 2012."
- Come on man...Not really necessary right now. Prayers to Ramos' fam
My thoughts and prayers go out to Ramos and his family. I can't imagine the torment that they are experiencing right now.
Anon @8.57pm. At least man the ---- up and use a handle if you're going to spout such crass comments.
Unbelievable is the word comes to mind.
I work with Wilson and feel helpless right now to do anything. I tried calling his agent at SFX and the call went straight to voicemail.
2011 was so special for Wilson and his family.
When his mother visited from Venezuela over the summer for her 1st trip to the US, Wilson was so happy.
Thoughts and prayers to the Ramos family.
Yikes! Prayers for his safe return.
I can't believe this! I will keep him in my prayers and hope for his safe return.
I am praying hard for the Buffalo, and his safe return. How horrible to live where this happens.
It really makes you appreciate living in the U.S. I truly hope Wilson is returned safe and he and his family can emigrate to America away from that savagery.
Shocked. Pray for his safe return. How scared his family must be right now.
Prayers for Wilson and his family.
Was shocked to see the news on MLB Network earlier and my prayers are with Wilson and his family.
(And Anon@8:57: Really, that's where you went with this? That's sad.)
Praying for Wilson to come back safely.
Unbelievable. Just unbelievable. Why couldn't they kidnap Daniel Snyder and leave Ramos alone ... he has more money ...
Adding my prayers for his safe return.
I don't often link to other beat writer stories here but Amanda Comak has a recently updated piecehere. She also cites a Time magazine piece which stated that 98 percent of such kidnappings in the country end in release of the individual. Hope and pray that is the case here as well.
I am shocked. I pray for his safe return and I hope the guilty people who did this are severely punished.
Prayers for Wilson.
Anon 8:57 -- You're an embarrassment.
All my prayers too. Get all players out of Venezuela.
Can't comprehend people joking about this.
Once again the anon nation shows its ignorance.
Can only hope these bandits make some sort of reasonable demands and get what they want. Wilson's safety is the most important thing here and we can only hope & pray he will be back soon.
Please let him be safe. That is all.
Please let him be safe. I keep thinking about reading how his mother came to town to watch him play, and how proud he was of that. Please let him be safe
You guys have all said it. I can't really add anything.
Simply awful. I pray for his safe release, not as a Nats player, but as a fine young man.
And Anon@8:57, you should be ashamed.
Human beings are an f__ed-up species. May lightning strike these thugs.
Just can't believe it. So hoping he'll be OK.
This is eerily reminiscent of the Sean Taylor incident that occurred almost exactly four years ago; we lost one heck of a good football player at that time, but most importantly we lost a man who was turning his life around. May God return Wilson to his family unharmed.
I heard this last night before I went to bed & woke up this morning hoping it was a bad dream. Prayers for Wilson and his mom and family. Slightly relieved to hear that other folks kidnapped got home okay.
WHAT!! My thoughts and prayers.....
Difficult to sleep last night knowing our friend Wilson is in harms way. Still praying for his safe return.
Like everyone else on this board I am appalled and wish with everything that's in me for his safe return to his family.
And to Anon 8:57, I wish for everything that's in me for a curse on your hemorrhoids.
Hoping and praying for a safe and speedy return of Wilson to his family. While kidnapping is a common occurrence in Venezuela, it hasn't actually happened to the player, it is usually a family member. If they have Wilson, who do they appeal to for a ransom? Not that it matters as long as the outcome is a happy one.
I'm concerned that the family reportedly has not yet heard from the kidnappers. I hope that things are going on behind the scenes to which the media is not privy. Praying for a safe return.
Awful, awful story. Prayers for his safe return.
Agree with natsfan1a comment -- let's hope that things are going on outside of the public eye, and that Wilson is released unharmed. Unfortunately, such kidnappings/ransoms apparently do happen in Venezuela, as various news reports have noted.
Just heard that the Washington Post is reporting that Venezuelan authorities have confirmed that Wilson is alive. So, that certainly indicates that there are non-public actions going on.
