Meyer, Goodwin in accelerated camp

VIERA, Fla. -- Big-league camp is open for business, but the Nationals' minor-league camp won't commence until mid-March. The organization, though, is making sure its top prospects get a chance to start preparing for the season right now.

Keeping with tradition, the Nationals are once again holding an accelerated development program this spring, inviting 47 top prospects to participate in a camp that opens at the same time as the big leaguers do.

Among the most noteworthy participants are a pair of 2011 draft picks: right-hander Alex Meyer and outfielder Brian Goodwin. (Two of their fellow picks, third baseman Anthony Rendon and left-hander Matt Purke, are actually in big-league camp because they were given major-league contracts upon signing last August.)

Also in the accelerated program are 2010 draft picks Sammy Solis and Robbie Ray and top center field prospects Destin Hood and Michael Taylor.

Be interesting to see who ends up in Syracuse, Harrisburg and Potomac.

Potomac is the only team that swings by me so I'm hoping some decent talent ends up there

An interesting list for both who is on it and who is not. Can McGeary really be in an accelerated camp?

Not on the list and not in MLB: Smoker, Holder, and Dykstra.

Someone please remind me: I think I know that if the Yankees return Rule 5 pick-up Brad Meyers, the Nats don't have to put him on the 25-man roster. But does Washington have to put him on the 40-man?

Take a good look at this list. Peric will be touting many of these guys as the second coming of Babe Ruth/Ty Cobb/Walter Johnson throughout the season.

RMoore, if you're reading, you can just type your preferred handle by choosing Name/URL in the "Comment as:" dropdown box. Just leave the URL blank.

Also, not on the list Tatusko.

Some other numbnuts wants to take my handle in vein? Gee. Well all I can say is I was right about Michael Morse now wasn't I? Before anyone else? I was right about Riggleman? I was right about JMax and I am right about Lannan.

Based on his stats I peg Carlos Rivero as a potential sleeper. He is still young at 23 and has already had 2 seasons of AA. Karns would be except for the shoulder surgery he had. Wirkin looks pretty good. You don't have to take my word you can take Sickel's on improved players like Hood and Lombardozzi who graded them out as "B"'s. Kylin Turnbull, a lefty, is interesting ...

And actually they do have a Walter Johnson like pitcher in Strasburg.

This may have to do with injuries ... something worth researching ... and Tatusko played winter ball this season.

You're totally making that up--you never mentioned it. That was another anon, if anyone at all, and you're just ripping it off. Go to your room.

Thanks for the great on-going coverage MarkMeister!

So, with Solis on the accelerated camp roster, I'm assuming all went well w/ his appt w/ Dr. Yockum (sp)? Last I heard, that appt was delayed b/c Solis was under the weather. Anyone w/ info on Solis's injury?

i like how people tout the things they may have gotten right and never talk about the misses.

Only when they call you out even when you aren't even posting? Hell yes. Otherwise no.

Natsjack likes to "tout" Boomer Whiting ... that wasn't my guy. My "miss" was a guy named JD Martin I liked his competitiveness.

I like how someone who refuses to claim an identity wants to take credit for being "right." How can you be anonymous and still think you can take credit for something? Sorry buddy - if you're too chicken to put some kind of label to your postings, you can't claim to have been right all along.

On second thought, if you find any anonymous postings in the past 3 years that were right, I'm the one responsible! not the other anons!

Nice to see Blake Kelso on that list.

Wow, did you predict Strasburg would be successful? Now that's impressive.

I don't have much recollection of your predictions about Morse or Jmax, though I doubt you were any more prescient than half the commenters here. But I do specifically remember hearing how Matt Antonelli and Eric Arneson and would soon be tearing up NL East for the Nats.

The whole reason B. Meyers was exposed to the Rule 5 draft was that he was not on the 40 man. So he won't have to go on that roster if he's returned by the Yanks.

I'm right about everything ... But then again, I knew that.

I've been away for a while but am excited to be back. What an interesting year we have in store. I'd comment more but am usually late to the party and would just be piling on. Love the insights but am uncomfortable with the personal attacks.

Putting Espinosa at leadoff is too risky at this point of the season as there is no fallback if Espinosa fails as well.

Let's get it straight @joemktg. Riggleman has already tried his preferred fallback and that would be Jerry Hairston Jr. and ostensibly why he, and not Harris, is the Nats UTIL. Why Morgan is now with the Brewers. In fact I would imagine Riggleman would prefer starting Hairston everyday ... he's finding any excuse to get him into every game.

No, they are not out of options with Espinosa. Roger Bernadina, Boomer Whiting, and even Steve Lombardozzi should be considered viable options. And let's not start with the Riggleman line? No, they don't have experience ... but ARE THE NATS going to win anywhere near 70 this year? Without a miracle? NO. So, what's the harm in developing future prospects ... isn't that the idea?

@Stranded_in_Philly,

You're forgetting about prospect Corey Brown a true five-tool CF obtained in the Willingham trade. He could be in CF this year at some point once he recovers from the ankle. Plus Boomer Whiting.

First base you find Michael Morse, Chris Marerro, and Tyler Moore after LaRoche. Majors, AAA, AA. The Nats have more coming from the low minors and not just Destin Hood and Eury Perez. Chris Curran is a fairly good CF prospect who's never came around.

The problem for the future is still pitching, pitching, pitching and especially starting pitching. Certainly no CF. Perhaps finding another Nick Johnson like bat for the #2 spot and the best possible lead off candidate.

Nyjer Morgan should be in the unemployment line starting today! He has disrespected the game, the Nats uniform, opposing fans and Nats fans, he is at best an a$$ and at worst a crazed psychopath either way there is no place for him in our organization, one that reportedly built on character.

I hope that major league baseball suspends him for another 7 games and that the Nats if they do not DFA him suspend him for the remainder of the season.

I think Gaby Sanchez and Chris Volstad should get paid a little bit extra for giving it Nyjer because he deserved everything he got, probably deserved more!

He is not one of us, he makes a mockery of us, time to make a mockery of him by taking away his stage on which he can act up on.

Bring up Boomer Whiting!

I for one have been critical on Rendon in the past. Calling him "doughie" and weak looking. Heard Riz on the radio yesterday saying that Anthony checked in with 6% body fat the other day and that he really dedicated himself in the off season. That is great news.

If Solis is in accelerated camp, does that mean his arm is healed from the injury in Arizona Fall League?
