Nats open 2011 at home vs. Braves

ATLANTA — The Nationals will host the Braves on Opening Day 2011, according to the schedule the club just released.

The Nats and Braves will meet on Thursday, March 31 as Major League Baseball moves its Opening Day up to a weekend series in an attempt to prevent the World Series from stretching into November.

Though the NL East is slated to face the AL West in interleague play, the Nats will face only the Mariners (at home) and Angels (on the road). Their other interleague series will be at the White Sox, plus the usual home-and-home Battle of the Beltways with the Orioles.

Here's the full 162-game schedule...

Won't have to worry about Braves fans being bus'd in so let's see if the home team can fill the house!

Has this already been addressed: are you in for another year of this, Mark? Sure hope so. Hope to see you in Florida next year also.

How glad am I we don't start with the phillies fans? Thanks for posting this.

Hmmm...there are some oddities in the schedule. Three series agains the Pirates? We face the White Sox again, but not the A's or Rangers? I thought next year was our year to play the AL West. I do like starting the season with a Thursday/weekend series (I wonder how ESPN feels about Sunday Night Baseball not being the official first game of the season), and I'm thrilled it's not the Phoolies we're facing. I think this is the first time, at least as far as I can remember, that we have the home opener, plus home games on Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day. Good for MLB for finally getting some things right :)

Yaahoo!! I guessed it right. Mariners are coming down to DC next season. Can't wait to see the greatest hitter ever and the best right fielder in the history of the game in action against my Nationals. The only sad part is that June21-23 are Tuesday-Thursday. But I am going to try to go to all 3 games of that series. Can't miss on watching Ichiro.

And second to Anti-Clint's question, why aren't we facing an AL West team instead of White Sox?

What difference does it make which AL teams we face? We lose to them all ;-) (at least we did this year -- I think we had the worst interleague record in baseball)

You know what's nice about this schedule (besides not hosting 20,000 Phillie Phreaks for our opener)?

We're home for all three major holidays:
Memorial Day against the Phils
July 4 against the Cubs
Labor Day against the Dodgers.

Oh, it's going to be heaven in 2011.

StanK, you can have your marketing people contact my people regarding the copyright to that slogan.

Why are we playing the White Sox again? Is it some sort of weird scheduling quirk made necessary by the fact that the AL West only has four teams? If that's the case, why does the worst team in the NL East draw the White Sox instead of, say, the Royals or the Indians?

Bowdenball, great question. Bizarre although the Nats didn't do great against the Indians or the Royals....

We're home for all three major holidays:
Memorial Day against the Phils
July 4 against the Cubs
Labor Day against the Dodgers.

Is Fathers Day a Holiday too? Home on Sunday June 19th for Fathers Day. It is against the Orioles and the fact that it is Fathers Day and the Orioles should definitely be at capacity!

Most important date on the schedule is 3 April vs BRAVES. This is the day Teddy will win his first race.
My theory is Teddy is a front runner and will win his first race on the occasion of the Nationals being in first place alone at home. Some thing that has never happened since the races began :(
After taking the first two from the Braves and following the other NL East teams losing one of the opening games, we will have a one game lead at home that day and Teddy will win. Of course under ideal conditions this could happen a day earlier on 2 April, but it will be more dramatic on a Sunday afternoon!

Don't worry Riggleman will have Maxwell back on the bench before this game is over and, if not Friday. The only way he will start again is when and if Morgan finally gets his suspension!

Yay, I get to go to opening day now! No way was I doing a Phillies opener again.
