Moore, Milone earn honors

The Nationals have named first baseman Tyler Moore and left-hander Tom Milone as their minor-league player and pitcher of the year, respectively.

Moore, a 16th round pick in the 2008 draft, enjoyed a breakthrough season at Class A Potomac, hitting .269 with 31 homers, 111 RBI, 43 doubles and 78 runs scored in 129 games. He led the Carolina League in most key offensive categories, won league MVP honors, and tied for ninth among all minor leaguers in home runs.

Milone, a 10th round pick in 2008, went 12-5 with a 2.85 ERA in 27 starts for Class AA Harrisburg. Though he doesn't possess overpowering stuff, Milone struck out 155 batters in 158 innings, issuing only 23 walks along the way. The 23-year-old allowed two earned runs or fewer in 70 percent of his starts.

Both players will be honored before Tuesday night's game at Nationals Park.

really enjoyed watching Tom Milone this year in Harrisburg, looking forward to Tyler Moore next year. It will be good to see a power hitting first baseman in the burg again, its been a while.

This puts the Nats in a awkaward situation for 2011. Tyler Moore has clearly mastered the Carolina league and merits a promotion to Harrisburg BUT "the first baseman of the future" Chris Marrero has not mastered the AA level yet and a prmotion to AAA may not beneift him as 1B is at AAA is usually a roster filler spot by an aging veteran and AAA pitching is not as prospect laden as AA pitching.

I hope Millone continues to develop and gets a shot but I fear he is cut from the John Lannan mold and will get lit up in the majors.

@Harper
This one is pretty basic to me. We had Desmond play much of his 2009 season at Syracuse. Freddie Freeman, elite first base prospect for the Braves, was in the International League as well this year. Marrero's OPS is around .800. I don't have a problem promoting him, promoting Moore, and starting Justin Bloxom at Potomac.

Hopefully Moore builds off of his torrid second half and shows he can handle Harrisburg next year.

mark my words Marrero will be playing in the independent leagues within the next three years. He did not master the AA level because he is just not that good of a ball player.
