Mark Zuckerman / NATS INSIDER |
The Nationals have a new face on the roster in David DeJesus, acquired from the Cubs this afternoon in a waiver trade. The 33-year-old outfielder simply walked across the diamond before batting practice, met his new teammates and swapped his royal blue Cubs clothing for the Nats' navy blue. He'll be on the bench tonight but available to play if needed.
Jordan Zimmermann gets the start against a Chicago lineup that, at least on name recognition alone, doesn't really inspire a lot of fear. That, of course, means nothing, but it certainly looks like an advantageous matchup for Zimmermann. The Nationals lineup will have its work cut out for itself against Cubs ace Jeff Samardzija.

8:08 p.m. — And we're underway on a gorgeous, 77-degree night along the shore of Lake Michigan.
8:14 p.m. — Not much doing for the Nats in the top of the first. Bryce Harper sent a two-out, opposite-field single to left, but that was all Jeff Samardzija surrendered.
8:25 p.m. — Hmm, not exactly the start to this game Jordan Zimmermann had in mind. Four batters in, he trailed 3-0 after Junior Lake hit a shot off Ryan Zimmerman the turned into a double, Dioner Navarro drew a walk and then Nate Schierholtz launched a three-run homer into the right-field bleachers. Ugly way to get this one going for the Nats.
8:33 p.m. — Adam LaRoche led off the top of the second with a base hit to right, but he was quickly erased when Ian Desmond grounded into a 1-4-3 double play. Samardzija then struck out Wilson Ramos, so the Nats remain in a 3-0 hole heading to the bottom of the second.
9:00 p.m. — It's the Nate Schierholtz Show here tonight, folks. He just drove in his fourth run in three innings with a RBI hit to right in the bottom of the third. The Nats trail 4-0, with Zimmermann not looking sharp and the lineup not offering up much resistance for Samardzija.
9:10 p.m. — Now Donnie Murphy gets into the act. The journeyman infielder takes Zimmermann deep to right field to lead off the bottom of the fourth, making this a 5-0 game. I'll be honest: When I saw the Cubs lineup posted this afternoon, I thought Zimmermann was cruise. I was wrong. He's getting hit hard tonight.
9:18 p.m. — The Nationals lineup, meanwhile, has produced four singles off Samardzija in five innings. That's all. Only one man has reached scoring position. Still 5-0 halfway through this game.
9:32 p.m. — Hoo-boy, it's getting really ugly now. Zimmermann served up another three-run homer, this time to Dioner Navarro. It's now 8-0 after five innings, matching the most runs Zimmermann has ever surrendered. He's still throwing 94 mph, so I don't believe there's anything wrong with his arm. Could it be his neck acting up again? Maybe. Whatever the case, he's really in a funk right now.
9:41 p.m. — That'll do it for both Zimmermen(n). Jordan is yanked after five disastrous innings. Ryan has taken a seat, too, to rest in a blowout situation. Steve Lombardozzi now at third base, Fernando Abad on the mound.
9:53 p.m. — Mercy, Wilson ramos destroyed a pitch from Samardzija, sending the ball flying out of the ballpark and onto Waveland Avenue. Ramos admired it, too, standing at the plate for a second to watch before his slow trot around the bases. It's 8-1 Cubs at the stretch.
10:04 p.m. — It's Nate Schierholtz's world, folks. We're all just living in it. He just clubbed another homer, his second of the night. He's got six RBI. The Nats trail 10-1 after seven.
10:10 p.m. — David DeJesus makes his Nats debut as a pinch-hitter in the top of the eighth, getting a nice ovation from the Wrigley crowd. He tipped his helmet toward them, then popped out on the second pitch he saw. Welcome to D.C., David.
10:15 p.m. — Chicagoland native Ian Krol enters for the bottom of the eighth, and immediately serves up another homer to Donnie Murphy. That's Murphy's second of the night, just like Schierholtz, and the Cubs' fifth of the night. It's 11-1. Mercy. No, seriously, can they just institute the mercy rule here?
10:23 p.m. — Mercifully, this one is now over. The Nats lose 11-1 in a complete stinker of a ballgame. They fall to four games under .500. David DeJesus is wondering if he can sneak back over to the other clubhouse under the cover of night.
Old Boston bumbersticker: "Jesus Saves! And Espo scores on the rebound!" Somebody needs to work with that idea a little.
ReplyDeleteI sooo wish I was there this week.. Maybe next year..
ReplyDeleteGYFNG!!!
Please, please don't waste the hotness of Tyler Moore's bat by sitting him for a week!!! Time to start playing the future team. They could hardly do worse.
ReplyDeleteGonna be an adventure with Diaz behind the plate.
ReplyDeleteSomebody please tape Bryce's mouth shut.
ReplyDeleteWhat he say that has upset you?
DeleteThe Reds and DBacks play each other which will mean if the Nats can sweep the Cubs they will pick up a lot of ground in the Wild Card.
ReplyDeleteLets do our part.
DeleteHope we dont give up to much for DeJesus
ReplyDeleteWell I must say...im going to watch the starters of the Redskins before I switch over. At this point it's no biggie to miss the first inning. On a side note, we will miss you Shark.
ReplyDeleteEven in our 59 win season i always watch baseball and wil flup during comnercials.
DeleteMNF-- nothing in particular, just jawing at the umps a bit. Actually no more than most players, but he has such a target on his back and so many people seem to think he is a hot headed punk. He really needs to keep his head down and be more above reproach than everyone else. It's unfortunate, but everything he does is scrutinized. Lax Diaz is a super sensitive, insecure type who would make an example of him.
ReplyDeleteThat last strike Davey should have been in the umps face. A terrible call, so its hard to fault Harper when his manager was asleep at the wheel.
DeleteYou are right Laz Diaz is a loon
Swami I don't know why Harper, and more importantly Johnson, didn't go after the 3b umpire after the bad check swing call at the end of the Braves game. Why not try to light a fire under the team by going off on an ump?
ReplyDeleteJust heard Pujols is out for the season.... Think the Nats will make the trade of LaRoche????
ReplyDeleteAngels are further out than Nats Angels wont trade for him.
DeleteI didnt think Rendon or Harp swung on those check swings...
ReplyDeleteThe umps werent interested in the game late.
DeleteThey figured Nats had chances and blew it, so why give them more.
Good luck to Bernie wherever he goes!
ReplyDeleteDeJesus acquisition is curious. Is Rizzo already building next season's bench? Between Hairston and David, do Nationals have that fourth OF that can step up in case of injury?
Those 2 can platoon if they need to ply. Pinch hit against the correct pitchers.
DeleteThe Nats face lefty pitchers 2 of the next 3 games so hopefully T-Moore gets in the lineup, either for Span or LaRoche.
ReplyDeleteDeJesus and Gio seem to be getting along well: http://instagram.com/p/dNr0qYuxhu/
ReplyDeleteShowed them on Nats extra
DeleteYesterday we got beat by tge Braves HV
ReplyDeleteToniggt it looks lije Cubs JV. Where is Anthiny Rizzo?
Anthony Rizzo is out sick
ReplyDeleteThanks Nats 128.
ReplyDeleteHe is a solid player and I was surprised to see him not in the line up.
Okk laz dont screw around
ReplyDeleteApparently yesterday's home plate ump is a Georgia native and regularly shows favoritism to the Barves. And I heard that from a non- Nats fan.
ReplyDeleteThe third base ump Marvin Hudson is the atlanta native. He was home plate Saturday.
DeleteI am also very angry at Johnny and Ray because they virtually assured everyone that the Nats cannot possibly lose any of these 4 games. I hate it when they jinx it.
ReplyDeleteYou are probably mad at me I said the same thing. 39 straight wuns
DeleteRally roof top tonight.
ReplyDeleteIf LaRoche took that approach yesterday like Bryce just did with 2 strikes the Nats probably win the game.
ReplyDeleteALR rarely takes tgat approach.
DeleteI think Nats are trying too hard to to hit the ball hard. Look at Harper just guiding one to left, and it wasn't his 100% bat speed.
ReplyDeleteThat is what Tony Gwynn said I mentioned yesterday.
DeleteOk, now that Tyler Moire is here-- play him!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteThat's not the start we needed.
ReplyDeleteZimmerman boots the 1st ball of the game! Bravo!
ReplyDeleteWell that really sucked.
ReplyDeleteI am blaming this on Johnny and Ray.
ReplyDeleteI am blaming fielder for not fielding
DeleteDid they give Lake a double?
ReplyDeleteFP pretty much just guaranteed we lose this game.
ReplyDeleteWhere in the world did those curveballs miss?
ReplyDeleteThey didnt
DeleteLaz is already playing games.
ReplyDeleteNo, it's not the players at all- it's the commentators jinxing it ;). Oh, Jordan, please get a grip.
ReplyDeleteThe cb announcers are jinxing the cubs too.
DeleteSaid they should sweep.
FP making up the excuse that Ryan was playing in for the bunt. No thats where he always plays. Tries to play matador with the ball and whiffs on it.
ReplyDeleteHe plays close to often.
DeleteWell then...
ReplyDeleteUnh unh unh...
ReplyDeleteWhat is the deal that are starters are not prepared to play. That is not the comentators fault. That is just poor pitching
ReplyDeleteThats what happens when your fielders dont make the plays. Man on 2nd to start the game and even the lousy Cubs make them pay.
ReplyDeleteThat is 1 of tge 3 rns.
DeleteSeriously - at this point would anything shock you?? Like that three run bomb given up by Jordan????? With only one out????????? Really??????? Ok- breathe, just breathe. We can score four, Jordan can get some outs now. Oh, Jordan. Are you Gio now??? What is it with the first inning and our pitchers?????? Ok, need to stop now.
ReplyDeleteWe hit him hard in May when we could no one.
Delete"Double off the glove of Zimmmerman" yep, sounds eerily familiar this year.
ReplyDeleteThat is an E 5, who they kidding?
DeleteI know it's only a Monday night, but this is going to require alcohol.
ReplyDeleteLeft side wide open.
ReplyDeleteI don't think there's alcohol hard enough, Swami.
ReplyDelete3 runs for us is a giant abyss.
ReplyDeleteGio stunk the first inning yesterdat, then pitched fine.
ReplyDeleteJZim obviusky had no memory as he decided to stink up the first inning too.
McCatty what is going on in preparation time?
Ian really slumping and not helping presently
ReplyDeleteAnd now FP and Bob with the big build up on Desi vs alphabet pitcher-- result, double play.
ReplyDeleteI seem to remember one guy we walked a long time ago that didn't score
ReplyDeleteWas it in June?
DeleteWhy the hell didnt he pitch like that in the first.
ReplyDeleteReally? We walked a batter that didn't score???? But that inning was more like it. Walk, error, home run- sheesh. Now- hits, hits, hits!
ReplyDeleteWhat is it with our Big 3 and the first inning...
ReplyDeleteIt prepwork in the bullpen.
DeleteThey come in not ready.
Not sure how to fix it, but I am not a professional they are sovthey need to fix.
MNF, he did pitch like that in the 1st and his 3rd baseman booted the ball. His hole approach changed with the man on 3rd.
ReplyDeleteWith 1 out you need to k the guy. A fast ball right in the middle rarely k's a guy.
DeleteA sac fly is one run a neatball poirly pitched in 3.
Ge didnt putch well at all 4 pitch walk.
It's early. It's the Cubs. Come on now.
ReplyDeleteApparently the Phillies are interested in signing Roger Bernadina.
ReplyDeletePhils have interest in Bernadina. You know if he ends up there he hurts us.
ReplyDeleteDavid- I am your echo yet again.
ReplyDeleteHarper now RISP time
ReplyDeleteAnother 0 RISP
ReplyDeleteWhat is it with Span and this "yes I'm running" - "no I'm not" routine?
ReplyDeleteDid no harm this time, but he's doing the team no favors.
Why is it when one of our pitchers throws a meatball pitch it ALWAYS gets hit out of the ballpark, but when their guy throws a meatball, we foul it back.
ReplyDeleteBecause dont idebrify location well enough.
DeleteYeah David but it is a "good cut"
ReplyDeleteAre you kidding me right now
ReplyDeleteOk, so what the heck is going on with JZ???? He was our most solid pitcher. Totally a hard ass . Now he gets shelled. By the Cubs. I do not understand this at all. What is going on?????
ReplyDeleteNasty pitch... But they are eating Jordan... And we can't do nothing...
ReplyDeleteJZimm is definitely making his market value more affordable as his season nosedives.
ReplyDeleteWell Eddie, that is certainly one way to put a spin on this.
ReplyDeleteYeah, let's all just swing for the walls and hit pop flies. That always works.
ReplyDeleteSigh. This is depressing.
ReplyDeleteWell, that one wasn't anybody but JZ's fault.
ReplyDeleteOh, my. Just when I think we have hit rock bottom.
ReplyDeleteNats getting whipped by a Double A team tonight. There's absolutely no limit to the humiliation this season.
ReplyDeleteCharlie and Dave were saying during the pregame show that JZimm hates playing at Wrigley Field. I see why.
ReplyDeleteJZ will finish the year on the DL. Not hoping for that, really not, but just see that coming.
ReplyDeleteThe guys sure are showing a lot of fire and fight. With Rizzo making his move for the playoffs, it's only a matter of time before these Nats close in on the Reds and beat all their foes on their way to their first championship.
ReplyDeleteBut I still blame all the commentators for angering the baseball gods with their attitudes. You see, it's just much easier for me to live with that. JZ pitching badly is not something I can choke down.
ReplyDeleteUhm... I'm trying to hope we win this game...
ReplyDeleteInteresting. FP says all of the Nats coaches say that Bryce did go yesterday on the check swing.
ReplyDeleteEven the pitcher is hitting the ball hard.
ReplyDeleteBut then again- does it matter if they score five or one or ten? We have a big goose egg yet again. Their number could be anything .
ReplyDeleteFifth inning- one pitch, one out.
ReplyDeleteI understand team let down..fatigue...but JZim no excuse at all!!! this damn team has no consistency...half ass at best
ReplyDelete8 pitches. Ouch.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeletewatching skins game at same time nice to see at least 1 dc team winning
ReplyDeleteTo those shocked by this performance... Welcome to the 2013 Washington Nationals season.
ReplyDeletewondering if 98 wins was a huge anomalie
ReplyDeleteJZimm is fooling nobody
ReplyDeleteto add.... welcome back to losing baseball....
ReplyDeleteI really have doubts about Rizzo and the future...too many soft over rated guys
Swami, I explained exactly what happened to JZ last week. However not one person either thought I was right or cared as no one elaborated.
ReplyDeleteDan I'm not surprised anymore. Not even angry anymore. I'm going to just try to enjoy the games because I love baseball more then I love the Nats.
ReplyDeleteAccording to FP, this is a hangover from the 15 inning game. Did Jordan pitch in that game? Or is that another excuse for our hitters?
ReplyDeleteMNF-- ?????
ReplyDeleteswami
ReplyDeleteexactly!!!!
FP excuse making.
ReplyDeleteWe will come back
Ty-ler Moore. Ty-ler Moore. Ty-ler Moore. Ty-ler Moore.
ReplyDeleteJZ has ZERO excuses
ReplyDeletealright who is pitching tomorrow?
ReplyDeleteharen on tues
ReplyDeleteno matter what he does...i respect him now
Yikes.
ReplyDeleteWow... Jordan... Just wow....
ReplyDeleteThis is all on Jordan... They have been rocking him like no one's business.... Terrible...
Some want to blame Ray others RZim.
DeleteSeem like JZim lacks interest tonight
Here is the simpke explanation.
ReplyDeleteDo you remember the movie Freaky Friday?
Well Dan Haren and Jordan Zimmermann had a Dreaky Friday incounter during the All Star Break. Dan Haren is now pitching great and Jordan Zimmermann is givibg away money and homers.
but again...Nats now have scored 1 run in last 14 innings
ReplyDeletethat is pathetic and why this team is a BUST!!!
The Angels are a bust this is just disppointing.
DeleteSo, according to some here we are supposed to replace a guy that still leads the team in home runs, walks, and is second in RBI's with a mediocre fielding guy that has hit .164 in the majors this year? Sorry, I don't equate a couple of decent months in AAA as being a hot hitter that has earned a starting position when his ML OPS isn't even close to .500
ReplyDeleteYeah, if we had started Moore tonight we'd surely be winning.
I am among those who said tgat, though ALR is way below career average and needs to get back to pkaying.
DeleteWhat are the stats for JZim. Pre allstar game vs post? Bet it ain't pretty. Why not shut him down to, the season is over as far as post season. Bring Karns up. Or Cole
ReplyDeleteMNF
ReplyDeletelol this whole season is freaky....
MNF
ReplyDeleteand the irony is Nats may want Mike Scocia as manager...that would be a typical stupid rizzo move
If the Yanks dont resign Girardi take him.
DeleteScoscia is a good manager. He's a guy who would benefit from a change of scenery, I think. I don't necessarily want him, but I wouldn't be upset if we got him.
ReplyDeleteHe is losing with great hitters. What makes you think he can win with weaker hitters.
DeleteOMG please end this season. when do we play the Braves?
ReplyDeleteMNF
ReplyDeleteGirardi would be GREAT
David...Scosia I think would be a disaster...2 years in a row angels have stunk with the talent they have had
We see eye to eye on that one.
DeleteJames O'Hara @nextyeardc 49s
ReplyDeleteAfter his July 11 start JZim reported neck issues.
Before: 19 GS, 132.1 IP, 2.58 ERA, .967 WHIP
After: 5 GS, 25.2 IP, 5.26 ERA, 1.71 WHIP.
I am tired of hearing this neck issue. If it is injured go on the DL. If not quit talking about it.
Deletethis season has flown by, thankfully, it can not end soon enough
ReplyDeleteAs soon as it is over, I am ready for spring training.
DeleteTheir talent is overstated. Getting Josh Hamilton was an awful move. He's not that good. Pujols has aged very poorly. Their starting pitching is atrocious and has doomed them. Scoscia would be wayyyy down the list of reasons the Angels haven't been good.
ReplyDeleteJ zimm hates Rigley. Stras hates Atlanta. where did we get these cry babys from? what a bunch of pansies. getting smashed by the Mighty Cubs.
ReplyDeleteMore than any station, i hate losing.
DeleteObviously tgese guys don't hate losing as much as most of us.
David
ReplyDeletegood points on hamilton...pujols, i have no idea what happen to him...I did not think he would be playing this poorly
I said it before... I think Jordan's neck is really bothering him.... He hasn't looked nearly the same...
ReplyDeleteThey should have left Jordan in... Save the BP... This game is lost...
Gotta be jet-lag... *snickers*
SWM
ReplyDeletelike I have said, public address system at Nats Park should play the old Mr Softy Ice cream music
MNF, ALR is having a crap season, but I still don't see where Tyler Moore would be an improvement. AAA stats don't mean squat. I think that he should get an occasional start against LHP's and show that he can consistently hit ML pitching. I still see him as being an equivalent of a RH'ed Lucas Duda.
ReplyDeleteThe buffalo is starting the comeback.
DeleteJeff Samardzija looks like the the Capt. Morgan guy
ReplyDeleteI can see that
DeleteI cant even look at Davey anymore. He is just so pathetic. At least the Skins look good.
ReplyDeleteIs Davey awake? Its almost 10 here in tge east.
Deletepaul lol
ReplyDeleteSWM i hear you my friend and agree
Alright- we need to score a run. I don't think we have actually scored in many innings. What inning did we score in on Sunday? How could I forget that run? Ok- we are due to score another one.
ReplyDeleteCrappy game, very poor showing this season, but unlike mick, I never get tired of watching baseball, even these guys. You know what sucks even more for me? The off season.
ReplyDeletepoor davey, he reminds me of an old dog the vet is about to put down
ReplyDelete75 wins this year. No More.
ReplyDeleteInjured JZimm is still better than Nate Karns. We don't have the depth to just put him on the DL, especially now that Jordan has been shutdown.
ReplyDeleteJoe
ReplyDeletei always watch and will, i am just saying this season needs to end soon
MnF - if Haren can go on the DL with a phantom injury... Why didnt JZimm go on there for his real injury...
ReplyDeleteYou can be tired of hearing about it but the fact is, it is bothering him... He hasn't looked crisp since it kept him out of the AS game...
If your injured go on tge DL and get it fixed.
DeleteIf you going not go on the DL dont bother mentioning
I have no oroblem if someone is injured there is a solution, tge DL
MICK LOL OLD YELLER
ReplyDeleteJoe- if Tyler Moore is our future first baseman, he needs to play more. He cannot possibly do worse. And his AAA numbers have translated to the majors. I hate to see any player get here hot and then rust. Why not see what he can do at this point? What can it hurt? Not like the guys out there are tearing it up.
ReplyDeleteDP - you can slide T Roark in his spot if you DL JZimm.... And bring Karns back....
ReplyDeleteA run?
ReplyDeleteThank you Willy Ray!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteRamos seriously show boating right there...
ReplyDeleteI cannot wait for call ups. Let the younguns give it a shot.
ReplyDeleteSWM
ReplyDeleteOld davey
come back davey
Best doggone dog in the east
ha ha
BTW IAN DESMOND???? WTF?????
ReplyDeletesign that guy to a big league deal.
ReplyDeleteReminds me of when Hondo went over the roof on lolich
ReplyDeleteRemember that was the 10th homer of the week, it was when only 25-30 games a year on TV.
Deletethat one was a Saturday on channel 9
may as well have fun...
ReplyDeleteSW
who plays Travis and shoots the old dog?
lol
actually, i cried like baby when i saw that movie...
Travis was the name of the bad guy in the book Shiloh (anither dog)
DeleteBigcat
ReplyDeletelolol I remember that!!!
I've never felt that he plays with a decent glove, swami, so therefor I am not convinced that he is our future first baseman.I honestly hope that I'm as wrong about him as I've been on a zillion other things, but we'll see. How have his minor league numbers translated to the majors? I really don't know what you base that on.
ReplyDeleteJordan has never used his neck as an excuse. But the numbers are pretty clear.
ReplyDeleteZim never has, Davey has. He's the manager take care of it.
DeleteReminds me of when Hondo went over the roof on lolich
ReplyDeleteI answered thus already.
DeleteJordan, like Haren, just owns it, 1 way or the other... This has been 1 weird season....
ReplyDeletemick - Last week, Jack Clark revealed the rumors that have swirled for years that Pujols wass also a roid head who just hasn't been caught, and it has long been speculated that he, like a certain Smiley and other DR players, lied about his age. If it's true and the Angels actually have a 37-year old who will now be crashing in performance quickly while being unable to juice, that could be the worst contract in MLB history. Good summation of the suspicions surrounding Pujols here:

ReplyDeleteremember Reggie Jackson's shot in tiger stadium 1971 All star game?
if the ball does not hit the top pole, it could have been a 600 foot homer at least
Yep. I was a kid watching. Hangin curve. 1968 I believe. McLain won 31 that year. Tigers won it all. Beat Gibson in game 7 when Flood butchered a ball in CF
ReplyDeleteDidnt Jim Northrup have 5 grand slams that year.
DeleteBig cat
ReplyDeleteMcCain 31-6 that year only won 1 game in wS
Lolich won all 3 he pitched
gibson KO 17 in game one...man 45 years ago, remember it like last week
those were some great teams in 68
ReplyDeleteNate Schierholtz must have borrowed what Sammy Sosa was using.
ReplyDeleteJoe- did you see him playing first this weekend??? Picking it, stretching? He is so much better there than you are giving him credit for. But , even if you are right, shouldn't they play him there to see if he can cut it? What better opportunity will they have? Then they can plan on him or trade him depending on what they see. And we could use the offense. Why bring him up here scalding , hit really well and then waste it. He was very impressive at first- but ALR has years of experience on him. Time for them to let him play more. ALR will maybe play better with more rest. He looks like crap warmed over.
ReplyDeleteMick. Yes I remember Jackson's bomb. Off dock Ellis Longest one I ever saw
ReplyDeleteBigcat
ReplyDeletethat was very cool
This game reminds me of that Cubs-Nats series last September when the balls were just flying out of the park for the winning team--only the tables have been turned.
ReplyDeleteMNF
ReplyDeleteyes indeed he did!
We hit 6 home runs in back to back games in that series. Then the Cubs got all whiny and threw at Bryce for no reason. Benches cleared. That was a fun time.
ReplyDelete
