Game 91: Nats at Phillies

Mark Zuckerman / NATS INSIDER
PHILADELPHIA — The Nationals have lost two straight and have once again fallen into an offensive abyss. The good news: They're sending Gio Gonzalez to the mound tonight and their two other aces to the mound the next two nights, so there's still hope.

As detailed earlier this morning, the Nationals are something of an unstoppable force when either Gonzalez, Jordan Zimmermann or Stephen Strasburg is on the mound (playing at a 101-win pace). So Gio's presence on the mound tonight can only be considered a good thing.

On the other hand, Cliff Lee starts for the Phillies, and that's not a good matchup for the Nationals, who have struggled to hit lefties (MLB-worst .215 batting average) and have struggled to hit control artists like Lee, who has built an entire reputation on throwing strikes and getting quick outs.

So, something's got to give tonight. We'll see what does. Updates to come...

7:08 p.m. — We're underway as Cliff Lee throws (what else?) strike one to Denard Span.

7:14 p.m. — The good news: Bryce Harper roped a double off a 2-0 pitch from Lee. The bad news: Span, Ian Desmond and Ryan Zimmerman were retired on a total of seven pitches from Lee, all of them strikes.

7:21 p.m. — Nice 5-4-3 double play turned by Ryan Zimmerman and Anthony Rendon in the bottom of the first. Zim continues to get better and better with his throws, an encouraging sign if ever there was one. Gio Gonzalez, meanwhile, gets through the inning on 16 pitches, 9 strikes. Scoreless through one.

7:38 p.m. — Both pitchers settling into a groove here. Lee allowed a leadoff single to Jayson Werth in the second but erased him on a double-play grounder by Anthony Rendon. Gonzalez, meanwhile, pitched his way around a Michael Young double in the bottom of the inning. He's at 33 pitches through two. Still scoreless.

7:47 p.m. — Well, they've hit some balls hard off Lee so far, producing four base hits in three innings. But they haven't turned any of those into runs yet. It didn't help that Gio couldn't get a good bunt down, leading to Wilson Ramos getting thrown out at second base. But if you want to take the positive outlook, the Nats are putting together some decent swings against Lee.

7:56 p.m. — Wow, you don't see that call made too often. With a man on first, Lee bunted and Zimmerman attempted a difficult throw across his body to second base. The throw beat Carlos Ruiz to the bag, but umpire Lance Barksdale called him safe because Desmond's foot came off the bag too soon. Technically, Barksdale was correct. But man, that was really close. That's not a call you see made usually unless it's blatantly obvious, and this one definitely wasn't. But no harm, because Desmond then turned a 6-3 double play and Gio got a flyball to right to get out of the jam. It's still 0-0 after three.

8:20 p.m. — Whoa, back-to-back homers by Rendon and Ramos in the top of the fifth, each of them bombs. Just like that, the Nats lead 2-0.

8:40 p.m. — Whoa, back-to-back homers again. This time by Zimmerman and Werth. If you've lost track, that's four homers in a span of eight batters for the Nationals against Lee. Fairly remarkable. It's 4-0 in the sixth.

8:53 p.m. — Gio, meanwhile, continues to cruise along. He's through six scoreless innings, having allowed just three hits. And he's showing no signs of letting up. Still 4-0 as we go to the seventh.

9:05 p.m. — Gonzalez had to battle late, but Davey gave him the opportunity to finish the seventh inning, and he rewarded his manager for the show of confidence. Though Darin Ruf clubbed a solo homer to right, Gio got through the rest of the inning unscathed. His final line will be: 7 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K, 117 pitches, 74 strikes. 4-1 Nats as we move to the eighth.

9:19 p.m. — Man, Chase Utley can still pick it at second base. He just started as impressive a 4-6-3 double play as you'll see to end the top of the eighth. Nats still lead 4-1 as Tyler Clippard enters from the bullpen.

9:30 p.m. — And Clippard gets through the eighth. So we go to the ninth, the Nats still ahead 4-1 as Rafael Soriano tucks in and warms up.

9:51 p.m. — An insurance run for the Nats in the top of the ninth as Rendon doubles and then scores thanks to some wretched defense from the Phillies. It's now 5-1, no longer a save situation. But since Soriano was already warming, he's still coming in to finish this one off.

9:58 p.m. — That's it. Nats win 5-1. They're back to three games over the .500 mark. And they're now 36-5 this season when they score at least four runs.

  15. I wish Davey would throw his best lineup out there too. Harper should not be hitting 3rd, he's the slugger and Zim is the pure hitter, and Lee is a very tough lefty. Desi has no place hitting 2 either, despite his recent success. Span, Rendon, Zim, Harper, Werth, ALR, Desi, Suzuki (who hits Leee well) is what they should be throwing out there tonight.

  16. I got this email from the team:

Nationals SS Ian Desmond and Yankees P David Robertson have teamed up for the 2013 All-Star Game Final Vote and need your support. Visit mlb.com/vote to cast your vote for the deserving duo, or text N1 and A3 to 89269 to vote for Desmond and Robertson, respectively. Unlimited voting ends July 11 at 4 p.m. ET.
    (End of copy/paste from email.)

This has got to be the dumbest thing I have ever seen in my life. Vote "Desi and D-Rob." Who in the hell is David Robertson and why do I care if this random pedestrian goes to an exhibition game?

Also, since they've told me he's a really great pitcher who ought to go to the All Star game for the American League, does it make any sense for me to vote for him--knowing that if he does well and wins or saves the game for the AL, it could cost the Nationals home-field advantage in the World Series?

Just absolute, epidemic, circular, mindless stupidity.

  19. NatsLady,

He really has pitched well although ERA for relievers means bupkes. It doesn't tell you about inherited runners stranded, messes you create which are cleaned up by someone else etc.

Another 2 reasons ERA is such a flawed stat are:

    1) Not all pitchers have the same defenses behind them.

    2) Not all pitchers play in the same ball parks causing different environments not to mention dimensions.

Christian Garcia suffered a hamstring injury, Davey says. Will miss his next scheduled appearance at Triple-A. Can't seem to stay healthy.

I feel for the guy, but he's damaged goods. Relying on him for anything would be foolish.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Sorry, I think there is a difference between using a gay slur in a tweet (not that I approve) and what Gaudin is accused of (not that he is convicted, however). Plus, Gaudin is not a kid, he is thirty and a married man. No one knows why he was in that hospital in the first place.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Hmmmm--I dunno, a hamstring injury and he is only missing one start? They have a 7-day DL in the minors... Is he going on it?

Sounds more like they haven't decided yet who would go down if he comes up. His thirty days of rehab must be over. Not that I'm suspicious or anything...It's just very coincidental...

  39. On May 31 the Giants were 29-24 and 1 game out in the NL West. They are now 40-49 and about to be 40-50. That's the kind of losing the Nats have NOT done--> no matter how much we complain about nibbling around .500.

The hole is not deep. We saw over the last week how quickly a few games in the standings can be made up.

    ReplyDelete

  40. NL,

I think you nailed it. The obvious 1st choice I think is Ross O. but at the same time Garcia has been pitching 1 inning at a time and they need someone to eat innings especially with our current 4 & 5 situation. I think they would like Stammen to be the long guy but he has put a kibosh on these plans.

Also when Matheus returns I think one of the lefties goes back and I think Krol has been better and has more upside than Abad. Of course there is always the possibility of a trade.

    ReplyDelete

  41. NL,

The hole is not deep but as the days roll forward the deficit becomes more significant. If the Braves would have played even a bit better they could have put us away by now. They have the White Sox and the Mets after the break and we have the hot Dodgers and Pittsburgh. We have to find a way to cut into the deficit at least back to where we were a couple of days ago.

I'm loving it since I predicted here 2 weeks ago that I thought the Dodgers would take the NL West with 86 wins.

At the time I figured the Giants or DBacks for 2nd place.

The Giants pitching has now fallen apart. Things are so bad the Cubs now have a better record!

    ReplyDelete
  43. JD, absolutely. I said a few days ago Davey has to get out of "teaching mode." He should have lifted Jordan after five, he was tired, leaving pitches up and they were getting hits. Sorry the kid would not have gotten the win, but better a no-decision than a loss.

    ReplyDelete
  44. The fact that the Giants are tanking is only relevant if you happen to know they are going to come back and win. Otherwise, they're just another team that's tanking, in their old classic June Swoon.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I would love to see somebody come up to the plate and gaze admiringly into the bleachers, and when the ump or catcher asks what he's looking at, say "I was just admiring the home run I hit two weeks ago."

  50. JD, that may be, I don't know, but FWIW, my "sources" in the Bay Area tell me he apologized, and it was pretty much forgotten locally.

  57. DSpan is our starter. Hairston is a bench player. This will not be a platoon. End of story. Anyone listening to Ray Knight?? He sounds very openly frustrated with the team's hitting approach and the lack of adjustments being made. Welcome to that party, Ray.

  58. Interesting quotes from Hamel about Werth. A lot of respect there. I will say that Jason is looking more n more like that Phillie guy who terrorized us. He just flicked his wrists last night and the ball was gone

    ReplyDelete
  59. Span has better numbers against Lee than Hairston. That's why.

    ReplyDelete
  60. See, the first step is to learn from what you've observed. The next step is to learn the right thing. "Scott Hairston is a better leadoff hitter" is not, in my view, the right lesson from last night's handful of plate appearances.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Who's afraid of small sample sizes? Not Scott M!

    ReplyDelete
  62. JD - Krol was a 7th round pick who had an ERA of 5.20 last year. As I said--nothing special. Not to mention, he was the PTBNL in that deal.

Cole was the big enchilada of that trade for the Nats. I seriously doubt Krol's previous mistake had anything to do with him being traded.

    ReplyDelete
  63. In 2010, Krol pitched 140 innings with a 2.80 ERA. Krol was very highly regarded in the A's organization. He struggled a bit last year because he was injured in 2011. From everything I've read, the A's still viewed him as a pretty good prospect. Whether or not his slur played into him being traded, I don't know, but he wasn't complete crap for the A's.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Interesting that lefties actually hit Lee significantly better than righties.

    ReplyDelete

Doc, with all due respect, Davey knew sabermetrics before it was even invented. For real.

    And here's a great example:

    This season:

Cliff Lee against righties: BAA .207
Cliff Lee against lefties: BAA .268

So, maybe Davey -- a masters degree in math -- is smarter than some of us.

  98. The neighborhood play has been around for ever. Why call it tgere.

  99. Span hits Lee better than Hairston.

Also, that should've been called an out.

  100. Fundamental baseball and its 1-0 nats......frustrating

  102. For the record, the one replay they showed on MASN was not at a good angle to show Desmond's foot, but it looked to me like he was there.

  103. FWIW, meteorological heck is suddenly breaking loose here in mid-DC.

If it was that close, then the runner is out. That is a BS call. Barksdale screws the Nats again.

    ReplyDelete
  105. He could not possibly have been off the bag, if indeed he was at all, more than an inch, or an instant. He was stretching for the throw and "pulling" forward toward the mound. Bad call.

Ghost...i agree, Nats have to play through these homer umpires

I check the Pitch F/X after each game to see how fair the umps are and what I find is that the Nats seemingly never get the calls in their favor on Strikes/Balls. Not sure why that is. Maybe a carryover from being so bad. Then you get this year the Nats haven't received 2 GIDP neighborhood calls.

Davey needs to yell some more.

  107. SEC 3 - I'm a mile away from Nats Park... I was just about to say - they need to delay the game... It's dark as heck outside...

Then I realized we were in Philly...

    #doh

    ReplyDelete
  108. Another point, the passiveness of Acta was years of the Nats getting screwed by the umps and they knew he wouldn't complain.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Rendon with a great stop. He got that as the ball was by him.

    ReplyDelete
  110. Now, THAT'S a play Danny would have made. Great job, Rendon!

    ReplyDelete
  111. Just got off phone with Big Cat.

    Both bemoaning Barbaro.

Remember 5 or more runs we are 35-2

    ReplyDelete
  112. Dammit... My directv is messing up.... Ugh....

    ReplyDelete
  113. See, 0-2 count and Rendon spits on it. That probably makes his 2 strike average around .230 now.

    ReplyDelete
  114. OMG that HR hit the fan right in the face.

    ReplyDelete
  115. LOL! Make a great play, lead-off the next inning, and hit a home run!!!

    ReplyDelete
  116. Rendon should be batting cleanup instead of Zimmerman.

    ReplyDelete
  117. I just love Rendon and Ramos. RR railroad

    ReplyDelete
  118. Ramos! Maybe the righties have Lee figured out?

    ReplyDelete
  119. No do not call him a Buffali Soldier a slang term from 1870s

    ReplyDelete
  120. Rendy ran when he hit his homer. He didn't know that you are supposed to stand there with your hands on your hips....

    ReplyDelete
  121. Mrs B, I'm 3 miles on a line from Nats Park, and we're getting some donner und blitzen with serious wind. The worst of it seems to be south, I hope there's no tornadoes there.

    ReplyDelete
  122. Come on Harp, that was an awful AB.

    ReplyDelete
  123. The contest of getting a hitting lesson from Zim.Harper took the lesson and didn't swing at 3

    ReplyDelete
  124. I love Rendon and the Buffalo. Took two outta the park against Cliff Lee. Yeehaw!

    ReplyDelete
  125. now thats what I call some R&R

    ReplyDelete
  126. Did Ramos swing first pitch?

    ReplyDelete
  127. So many good ABs then you got Span with weak contact and RZim's Ks which is the difference from piecing together a big lead.

    ReplyDelete
  128. I agree he doesn't fit the profile, but who called him Buffalo Soldier?

    ReplyDelete
  129. Gio run the pitch count up by walking first batter on 8 pitch.

    That is not fundlemental baseball

    ReplyDelete
  130. Last thing you can do is walk the leadoff guy, Gio. Especially when that guy is Delmon Young.

    ReplyDelete
  131. 35-2 with 5 runs 15-1 away 20-1 at home

    ReplyDelete
  132. I'm more impressed by Rendon's AB. Young rookie, 0-2 count and he once again put together a great 2 strike at-bat.

As I said yesterday that Rendon was scouted as the rare youngster who handles 2 strike counts like a professional hitter.

    ReplyDelete
  133. Sigh. Throw strikes, Gio. You can't start walking the world when you get a lead.

    ReplyDelete
  134. Come on Gio. You got a lead. Throw strikes. Get your head in it. The ump sucks. Get over it.

    ReplyDelete
  135. My biggest bitch about McCatty he comes out to lste.

As soon as 2-0 on first batter Desmond should have been in thete.

Why are so slow to react?

    ReplyDelete
  136. Actually the first thing you do is walk the lead-off guy....

    ReplyDelete
  137. Ok, granted, I'm following the game on MLB Gameday, but apparently Gio shold just throw underhanded down the middle, it's the only was the jackmunch behind the plate is going to calla strike.....it's insane.

    ReplyDelete
  138. Ramos has actually said that he enjoys batting 8th. If it works for him, let him at it.

    ReplyDelete
  139. This ump at 2nd base needs to be kicked upon with soil....

    ReplyDelete
  140. In basketball that was the time for the make up call.

    ReplyDelete
  141. I don't think FP knows the origins of what Buffalo Soldier is. Has the term changed?

    So true.

    ReplyDelete
  143. Inning should already be over but for these umps....

    ReplyDelete
  144. I just stopped and crawled on the throw to second--that was another bad call. He was out. Very close, but no question.

And is it me, or is FP going a bit Harry Carey on us, if you catch my drift?

    ReplyDelete
  145. Wow. Just checked Cliff Lee's stats and given that he is a lefty, we shouldn't expect to win tonight....

    ReplyDelete
  146. What a pitch by Gio and how's about Ramos getting his mitt in the spot to catch that foul tip! WOW!

    ReplyDelete
  147. Actually the first thing you do is walk the lead-off guy....

    +1

    ReplyDelete
  148. I think one of the best power hitters on the team should not be batting 8th
    Span,rendon,harper,ramos,desi,alr,zimm,werth

    ReplyDelete
  149. *stopped and crawled ON THE DVR/HD.

And take the rosebush from my hair ...

    ReplyDelete
  150. I agree with you. Ramos could certainly bat higher up. But if he likes batting 8th and he still puts up good numbers batting 8th...why mess with a good thing?

    ReplyDelete
  151. These guys have similar stuff as lefties....

    ReplyDelete
  152. Buffalo Soldier

FP, like many in here, doesn't waste time with rigor in his usage.

    ReplyDelete
  153. He didn't get fooled that time.

    ReplyDelete
  154. A day late but we will take it RZim! Nice shot. You killed that one!

    ReplyDelete
  155. Home Run Derby tonight apparently

    ReplyDelete
  156. because, he'll like batting higher in the order and provide more production for the team.
