Game 106: Mets at Nats

Mark Zuckerman / NATS INSIDER
The way things had been going around here only a couple of days ago, the fact the Nationals today have a chance to win four of their last five is rather remarkable. But that's the position they find themselves in after walk-off wins Thursday and Friday and then yesterday's 4-1 victory over the Mets. Funny how this game works.

If they do find a way to take today's series finale against the Mets, they may just hand Taylor Jordan his much-awaited first career win. The rookie right-hander certainly has pitched well enough in his first five starts (3.68 ERA) to deserve better than an 0-3 record. Today presents a new challenge for him, facing an opponent for the second time for the first time (if that makes sense).

Check back for updates...

1:37 p.m. — We are underway.

1:44 p.m. — A solid, 18-pitch top of the first for Taylor Jordan, who retired the side. He struck out Josh Satin looking at a nice slider, a pitch he seems to be using more effectively with each passing start.

1:49 p.m. — Some unfortunate news to report: Nats pitching coach Steve McCatty was taken to the hospital a little while ago. We don't know what happened, but a team spokesman said he wasn't taken in an ambulance, so it doesn't appear to be a life-threatening emergency. McCatty was here this morning, so whatever happened must have happened in the last hour or two. Hopefully we'll get a positive update later.

1:57 p.m. — Two innings, six batters, six outs and 29 pitches for Jordan. Good stuff so far from the rookie.

2:15 p.m. — Whoa, it's a genuine rally by the Nats' lineup! They scored three runs in the bottom of the second via four base hits, three of them coming with runners in scoring position. Ian Desmond doubled, Denard Span singled, Wilson Ramos poked an 0-2 pitch to right field for an RBI single and after a Jordan sac bunt, Bryce Harper poked a 3-2 pitch to left field for a two-run single. Just like that, it's 3-0 Nats after two.

2:24 p.m. — Nine up and nine down for Jordan. Impressive in its own right, even more so considering he's facing the Mets for the second time. Still 3-0, middle of the third.

2:37 p.m. — Sweet Fancy Moses, the Nats lineup is on fire. They just put up five more runs in the bottom of the third, torching Carlos Torres. They're now 6-for-8 with runners in scoring position today, and the most encouraging part of that is the fact the first four of those hits all went to the opposite field. Guys weren't trying to pull the ball into the stratosphere for a change. ... Of course, Wilson Ramos absolutely pulled the ball into the stratosphere when he blasted a grand slam to cap the inning. Ramos got a curtain call for his efforts, though Jordan didn't know he was supposed to step out of the batter's box to allow for it. No problem, Wilson just waited until between pitches to accept the fans' love. It's 8-0 after three.

2:52 p.m. — Well, there goes Jordan's perfect game. And his shutout. The Mets scored in the top of the fourth on three singles, including Marlon Byrd's RBI base hit off a diving Rendon. So it's now 8-1 Nats.

3:09 p.m. — Make it 10-1 Nationals thanks to four more hits in the fourth off reliever Gonzalez Germen. They're now 8-for-11 with RISP, and their 6-8 hitters today are 7-for-7 with a walk, a homer and seven RBI. That'll usually work. Onto the fifth.

3:24 p.m. — Jordan has completed five innings, striking out seven, so he's officially in line for his first career win. That's assuming the Nats can hold a 10-1 lead, of course.

3:58 p.m. — Sweet Fancy Moses, Denard Span has homered twice in as many days! This one was a 2-run blast, giving the Nats a commanding, 13-1 lead after six innings. Remarkably, this is the second time in a month the Nats have led the Mets by 12 or more runs in a game. That deserves another Sweet Fancy Moses!

4:13 p.m. — Craig Stammen enters with a 13-1 lead and proceeds to load the bases on a single, two walks and a wild pitch. Come on, Craig. He did manage to get out of the jam, so the lead remains at the stretch.

4:30 p.m. — Meanwhile, a spring training game has broken out here. Mass changes on both sides as they just try to keep the big names healthy. Zimmerman, Harper and Werth are all on the bench now. Still 13-1 as we go to the bottom of the eighth.

4:39 p.m. — Make it 14-1 as Desmond doubles in another run. Unbelievable game from the bottom of the lineup today. Ryan Mattheus in to close this one out.

4:54 p.m. — Good lord, Mattheus loaded the bases in the ninth and had to be pulled out of the game by Davey in favor of Fernando Abad. But Abad finished off a 14-1 victory. The Nats take 3 of 4 from the Mets and have won 4 of their last 5. Pretty crazy, when you think about it.

  1. Pitch ahead in the count Taylor and you will be fine.

  2. I haven't heard Bob Carpenter's bootleg weather report yet, but some alternate postings suggest that the T-storms won't start until about 3-3:30 pm.

Yeah, 4 out of the last 5 sounds good. Man, are we desperate, or what!

  3. Haren got a win, Span hit his first home run as a Nat, we had our first two walk off home runs this season- in two days. Next up- a curly W for Taylor Jordan. Let's just break all those barriers down.

  4. Let me just say this: the Mets radio crew is very unprofessional. The SNY cast is fine, but I heard snippets of their radio broadcast yesterday. They referred to the Nationals throughout as "the Washington Underachievers" and basically took stupid jabs at the team the entire game.

  5. No David Wright is usually a good thing. Come on Taylor Jordan! Come on all you hitters! Three in a row would be encouraging.

    Meanwhile, down on the farm:

    At Syracuse :

    Tyler Moore is hitting .309

Last night Erik Davis came in in the 8th with the bases loaded and nobody out and nobody scored scored. I really like the whole Erik Davis story and I hope he makes it.

    Espy struggling again @.196

    Down in Hagerstown:

    Brett Mooneyham: IP 8, 0 runs on 2 hits, 8 K's

  6. Tyler has really been raking but I'm so hesitant to say call him up because he's already been up here twice.

  9. Not that it really matters, but just wondering:

One of those double-header games is considered part of the other Mets' series because of the rainout. If the first game was the make-up game, then technically we'd be going for a sweep today.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I hope Tyler pitches into the eighth as he did last time. And I surely hope we get the Kid some runs.

    GYFNG!!

And somebody please reaffirm to me that the Barves cannot sweep, right?

  11. This answers my question from the last thread. From Byron Kerr:

Rizzo also said Jordan will get the opportunity to compete for a 2014 starting role.

"He will get every opportunity to be in the mix for the rotation next year, certainly," Rizzo said. "He has pitched extremely well. I like his demeanor on the mound. He shows poise of a major league pitcher and has the stuff for it."

  12. Espy struggling again @.196

Yeah, remember when Espi had that little mini hot streak? 9 games where his slashline was .469/.528/.844/1.372 with 2 HRs and 7 XBH? Some of us said, "small sample size," and said we'd want to see consistent raking for a month at least before even considering bringing him back up. In the 13 games since then, he's 9 for 53, with no extra base hits and 16 Ks. His slashline is .170/.224/.170/.394.

David, I don't know if there's an official definition of series or not, but I have chosen to consider back-to-back games with the same team as a series, no matter when originally scheduled. Thus I consider this a four game series. However, I don't object to other definitions.

  14. Jon Heyman:

The Nationals made a run this spring at trying to lock up star shortstop Ian Desmond but didn't reach an agreement, sources connected with the team said.

While nothing appears imminent, with talks apparently stopping once the season began, the Nats still hope to keep Desmond, who's had a very nice year and barely missed making the All-Star team a second time, with an extension.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I'm much more concerned about Anthony Rendon's slump right now. He has 2 hits in his 32 AB's

    For July: .190/.238/.342/.580

His BA has gone from .308 at the beginning of the month down to .262
I'm sure he'll be fine, but he is struggling big time right now.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Tyler has a track record of being good after he has time to get his stroke back. Seems like he needs a period of time with consecutive at bats and then he has it. He has done it before. Can he, with that history, be a worse bet than Tracy and Hairston? The real question for me is whether or not they have been training him to be an outfielder. He was put in a terrible position being stuck out there. He is good at 1b-- no, not ALR good, but certainly better than Dunn and probably Morse. If they plan on him ever playing the outfield , he needs experience out there.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Can he, with that history, be a worse bet than Tracy and Hairston?

Well Hairston hits lefties well. We're judging him on an extremely small sample size...and he's been put in against righties way too much. Tracy is irrelevant because Tracy is a LHB and Tyler is a RHB. Apparently Rizzo is looking for a LHB Bench bat to trade for.

    ReplyDelete
  18. And Joe- if you look at the numbers, Rendon would be a concern. But he has had games where he was scorching the ball and getting robbed by amazing defense. The league has made adjustments to him and now has scouting reports on where to position. I think he will start to have some of those fall in.

    ReplyDelete
  19. They referred to the Nationals throughout as "the Washington Underachievers" and basically took stupid jabs at the team the entire game.

I don't know which guys you were listening to -- but I happen to like Howie Rose (who's one of the Mets announcers. Well, at least he's the guy who I hear when I hear a Mets game on XM) -- I think he's very good, insightful, and knows his stuff.

As for being "the Washington Underachievers"-- well, I mean, if the Schu fits . . . . ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  20. (I've been waiting a whole week to use that lame pun!)

    ReplyDelete
  21. swami, on Moore, he is mainly playing 1st base.

On Anthony, I agree he is also having bad luck at the plate, and eventually when you keep hitting the ball it evens out. But, by the numbers he has had a very unproductive July at the plate.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Meter comes back today and hits a homer in his first AB. Some guys just have a flair for the dramatic.

  23. JD has got it right concerning Taylor Jordan. Strike 1 is his best friend.

  24. Damn auto correct! Jeter hit a homer in his first AB

    ReplyDelete
  25. Getting ahead of the count will be priority number 1 for T Jordan to work on in ST next year...

Hope all is well with McCatty....

    ReplyDelete
  26. Perfecting the slider is the key. It's already shown A LOT of progress in just the few starts since he's been called up.

    ReplyDelete
  27. How I get sucked in to going to D Haren starts... Idk... I go to 1 game every home series and it seems most times it's when D Haren pitches...

Anyway, great game yesterday... Had a blast at the fan appreciation digs...

Was psyched Span got his first HR....

    ReplyDelete
  28. Concerning news about McCatty. Same as Adam and Drew?

    ReplyDelete
  29. SectionTriple2, yes on Espinosa. Small sample sizes appear larger in the rear view mirror to those that support him.

Rizzo was correct when asked last week about him when he didn't seem overly excited.

    ReplyDelete
  30. LaRoche is down to the .230s. I know he had the awful April and hot as heck May, but I don't think he's done much since. He needs to get it going.

His track record suggests he will, but it's concerning at this point. It's almost August.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Wow... I'm amazed that Ramos wasnt out.... Way to go guys!!! Scoring without the long ball so far.....

    ReplyDelete
  48. Thundering buffalo! Did you see Ramos.Great job, Harper!

    ReplyDelete
  50. This is what I was referring to in last post; a string of constructive at-bats. A good sign.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I'll say this about Rendon: he's been slumping big time, but he's put together some solid ABs and hit the ball hard. He's NEVER looked overwhelmed or frustrated to me. He'll get it going.

    ReplyDelete
  60. LaRoche may be thinking TOO MUCH about going to left field now. There's a balance. I hate when he pulls everything, but now it seems like he's making all his outs to left. Odd.

    ReplyDelete
  61. And yet he's only thrown 37 pitches after 3 innings. Amazing.

    ReplyDelete
  62. ALR with a poor AB, at the very least, move the runner over.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I was referring to Taylor Jordan's pitch count @ 37.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  66. Are we seeing small ball right now???? Gosh, these have been some productive at bats....

    ReplyDelete
  67. So.... Apparently, when we put the ball in play, good things may happen. I hope somebody is taking notes....

    ReplyDelete
  73. Now let's just hope TJ can eat some innings. He's looked fantastic so far and with CLip and Soriano both going 3 days straight, it'd be a big pick-me-up. Especially with this lead.

    ReplyDelete
  74. HAHAHHA easy seamhead its only the 3rd inning.

    KATUNKA!!

    ReplyDelete
  75. Taylor Jordon, looks like you're in decent position to break your own streak!

I like all these ugly streaks coming to an end.

BTW -- Ramos - lifetime against the Mets (not including today's game): 20 games, .453, 10 2b, 3 HR, 12 RBI, .750 SLG, 1.228 OPS. Sure to get a big jump by the time today's stats get figured in.

    ReplyDelete

  83. MLB needs to check Byrd for his chronic use of steroids.

    ReplyDelete

Maybe Schu is fixing some issues.

It seems like he's just saying the same things as Davey and Eck were saying (i.e., swing at good pitches!). But perhaps with Eck's firing, some batters are paying attention now.

In pre-game show, Davey pointed out that he's been trying to get Span to swing at first-pitches if they are center cut fastballs and not fall behind in the count so much, and that Span seems to be able to do that better when he's not batting lead off.

And, sure enough, Span's HR yesterday -- Davey noted -- was on a first pitch.

    ==========

OTOH - Span has taken a first pitch strike all three times thus far today!

    And yet he's 3-for-3!

    #youcantpredictbaseball

    ReplyDelete
  102. Jordan has only 2 or 3 more starts, I think, based on what Davey said, assuming they go to the bullpen after 5 today.

    ReplyDelete
  103. And the storms are crossing 64 coming up from Charlottesville area now, so I'm guessing they have an hour or maybe 90 minutes before they get here, if nothing pops up before that.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Taylor Jordan's chance of picking up his first in 99.7%

    ReplyDelete
  106. OK, KID! It's official, and they aren't making errors behind you. A little offense, just one TD and a FG, that's all. Good day for the kid--I hope it's not raining when they interview him.

    ReplyDelete
  107. And Jhonny Peralta hit a Grand Slam. Phillies down big.

  110. Charlie y Dave said the 8 RISP hits today are as many as the rest of this homestand combined.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Nuts! I thought that might go.

    ReplyDelete
  112. AGAIN Rendon crushes one, and wins a free consolation trip to the dugout to get his glove.

  127. Span might have 15 if Schu was here all year!!

    ReplyDelete
  128. 15? Span would be on pace for 162!

    ReplyDelete
  129. Wonk. Look at Braun. You think he woulda went clean.

    ReplyDelete
  130. Span hit a low insude half fast ball so right center is fine on that pitch.

    ReplyDelete
  131. Tweeted this to Denard yesterday:

@thisisdspan Tell Davey you want to bat cleanup against the Tigers next week!

Wish I was that smart EVERY day.

  132. Of the primary 8 only one is batting below 260

    ReplyDelete
  133. MrsB, you & my dear wife have something in common when it comes to Mr. Span. Like me, Mrs. Seamhead loves watching good outfielders.

    ReplyDelete
  134. Yeah... Pitching duals and D win me over all day... I'll take good offense but I'm all about the D...

I'm glad to see Span locked in... Now if only Rendon and Adam can get hot...

    Watch out!!!

    Wow . . . remember when 3 of the 8 were batting below .200 ?

  136. Biggest attendance month for Nats in Nats history.

    ReplyDelete
  137. Wonk - re your post at 4:05 - injuries will do that to you....

But we still got hope the goon squad can get better....

    ReplyDelete
  138. Ok, I want to know if anybody here said at the beginning of July that Span would have a higher batting average than Rendon by the end of the month?

    ReplyDelete
  139. Are you kidding Stammen? THROW STRIKES. A home run doesn't matter until you put men on.

    ReplyDelete
  140. I'm so serious... Does Stammen have an injury???? He hasn't been right since ATl...

    ReplyDelete
  141. Man, Stammen is not the same guy we were used to.

    ReplyDelete
  142. was at the game yesterday standing behind the sect 313 cheerleading squad and ALR scorched a ball so I thought he was coming out of it, but maybe not.

Need to get WODL's thoughts on Span

  143. Taylor Jordan with a heck of a statline. 3.31 ERA

  145. A beat writer needs to ask Davey what's wrong with Stammen.

    ReplyDelete
  146. Davey has been asked. He basically says that Stammen is fine but he's been the victim of bad luck. Which has been the case in a COUPLE of his games, but on the whole, he looks different to me.

    ReplyDelete
  147. Does Scott Hairston have any hits after the first game with the team?

    ReplyDelete
  148. 128, ain't too shabby for Taylor, eh?

    ReplyDelete
  149. Stammen hasn't looked sharp ever since pitching that gem for SS in Atl....

    ReplyDelete
  150. Looks like everyone gets the day off for the rest of the game.

    ReplyDelete
  151. Roger still terrible. Guess Schu can't walk on water

    ReplyDelete
  152. The answer to your question is "no" Manassas.

    ReplyDelete
  153. I wouldn't have pitched Krol here.... I would have used Abad...

    ReplyDelete
  154. With those goals accomplished, the Cubs will move bullpen pieces and are "definitely" listening to offers for right fielder Nate Schierholtz, Sherman reports.

I wouldn't go crazy and be a buyer.our odds are still very long.

    ReplyDelete
  156. I have another question/statement. Is it just my perception, or has this been about as civilized of a game blog as we've had in months, or what?

    ReplyDelete
  157. so all the guys (Haren, Span, Soriano)I cussed Rizzo out for On Thursday (in the 9-7 win) are doing awesome. One day a bum, next day a genious...baseball a crap shoot

    ReplyDelete
  158. JD- I'm assuming you're asking why use Abad... Well he hasn't been the sharpest and I would have given him the work...

I know Krol didnt have a great outting his last time out...

    ReplyDelete
  159. Lombo hitting like Schu taught him.

    ReplyDelete
  160. Lombardozzi is hot right now. Rendon is still the better player, but given the scuffle he's in, I'd consider riding the hot hand until Lombo cools down.

    ReplyDelete
  161. Defensively place Lombo second, rendon 3rd and Tracy first in 9th

    ReplyDelete
  162. Now's a great time to experiment with tracy at 3rd...not when the game is tied in the 9th.

    ReplyDelete
  163. I like to sit behind first to play catch with Chad when he's at 3rd
