Instant analysis: Nats 5, Rockies 4

Associated Press
Ross Detwiler allowed three runs over five innings in his return from the DL.
Game in a nutshell: In the rubber game of the first series of a long road trip, the Nationals found themselves needing to rally from behind to beat a tough Rockies club. Ryan Zimmerman gave them an early 2-1 lead on his 10th homer of the season, but Colorado came right back to take a 3-2 lead off the just-reinstated Ross Detwiler. Still trailing in the seventh, the Nationals "rallied" to tie the game thanks to back-to-back balks called on reliever Wilton Lopez (who was subsequently ejected). They then took the lead in more conventional fashion, getting back-to-back doubles from Roger Bernadina and Zimmerman, then an RBI single from the red-hot Ian Desmond (who went 4-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to 15 games). Solid relief work from Craig Stammen, Xavier Cedeno and Drew Storen bridged the gap to Rafael Soriano, who did allow one run to score in the ninth before sealing his 17th save. Thus the Nationals head to Cleveland with a series victory, a winning record (33-32) and a deficit in the NL East that has now been trimmed to 5 1/2 games.

Hitting highlight: Obviously, Zimmerman's two-run homer and RBI double played crucial roles in today's win, but let's not ignore another stellar offensive performance from Desmond, who is on a sustained tear at the plate right now. With a 4-for-4 showing this afternoon, he extended his hitting streak to 15 games, a stretch during which he's batting .404. Overall, Desmond is now hitting .293 with a .483 slugging percentage that ranks third among all MLB shortstops (behind only Troy Tulowitzki and Jean Segura). Throw in the fact he hasn't been charged with an error in 46 games, and Desmond is starting to make a strong case for his second All-Star selection (and first actual game appearance).

Pitching highlight: In his first start in nearly a month, Detwiler (not surprisingly) looked a bit rusty. The Rockies jumped on him for a quick run in the first inning, then added two more in the fourth. Detwiler did find the strike zone with some consistency (51 of 77 pitches overall) and under normal circumstances would have been good to go deeper into the game. But given the fact he just returned from the DL and made only one rehab start in the minors, manager Davey Johnson didn't want to push the left-hander too much and thus ended his afternoon after only five innings.

Key stat: Since Wilson Ramos went back on the DL May 16, Kurt Suzuki is hitting .192 with a .234 on-base percentage and a .219 slugging percentage.

Up next: The road trip continues with a weekend series in Cleveland. Gio Gonzalez faces Justin Masterson in Friday's 7:05 p.m. opener at Progressive Field.

It was hard before with just Z Duke....

    DJ managed this one well...

  3. Now win the series in Cleveland.

    4 of 5 now.

7 runners left on base today by Suzuki. Werth is scuffling also and LaRoche is no longer going oppo on those outside pitches.

Luckily enough of the others were hitting today.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Hmmmmm... Pirates down two starting pitchers (Wandy and now A.J. Burnett). Nothing is easy.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Also want to thank Balking Bob for doing what he does best!

    ReplyDelete
  7. That's how it should be done. A spark becomes a flame, a flame becomes a fire, and that fire turns into a raging inferno. Before we know it, the Nats will have a 10 game winning streak(maybe), and we'll all wonder what we were worried about. Lets show the AL what winning baseball is all about. GYFNG, BABY!!!

    ReplyDelete
  8. Burnett is down? That's gonna leave a mark...or unearth an Ohlendorf... ;)

Today we came back not once but twice. Nice!

    ReplyDelete
  9. There were some on here who said we would be swept by both the Twins and Rockies and be 10 games under .500. Well we've 2/3 against both. Just keep winning 2/3 and all will be well.

    ReplyDelete
  10. This game feels like last year in Toronto where one pitcher after another got hurt.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I still hope we go at least 6-3 on this series... Although I hope we sweep Cleveland and win the series against the Philth.... But I will take it 1 game at a time....

Good going Nats! 2 series in a row...

    ReplyDelete
  12. You for real David P? Interesting....

  13. "7 runners left on base today by Suzuki. Werth is scuffling also and LaRoche is no longer going oppo on those outside pitches. "

Werth had an off series, but he was scorching hot against the Twins. We'll see how he does against Cleveland.

Yep, I love me some double barrel going in the bullpen. That was so nice!

    ReplyDelete
  15. I love how the offense came from behind and picked up Jayson from that error.

Hope Bernadina is ok because I think Werth needs a day off sooner than later as does Span, LaRoche and Suzuki.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Exciting game. Atlanta isn't shaking in their boots yet, but they will be soon. We're just getting healthy Get Harper and Stras back, get Zimmerman to quit lolly gagging, make sure Davey takes his Alzheimer's meds, etc. and we'll be okay.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Jason needs to come out the clean up spot... He is looking at too many Ks....

I know, though, that this will happen when Harper comes back...

    ReplyDelete
  18. They are slowing learning to cope without Bryce. If he comes back healthy it will be a huge boost.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Here's what I like, Davey has 21 of his A team guys right now and he will get 3 back sooner or later from injury.

With a good bullpen, Davey can actually manage like last year.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Tulo strained Lat on shark slide then aggrivated it on Ian's 4th hit.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Harp I think will be back by home Rockies series or the next one.

You start a struggling Dan Haren and Ross Ohlendorf at Coors Field and grab 2 wins - it's been a good series. #Nats showing some life maybe?

    Great point.

  23. I couldn't be a reporter, although I would love to be one... I'd be too distracted in the locker room(s) and pissed off if my team loses... I'd be asking al the wrong questions....

    ReplyDelete
  24. We have Gio, JZimm and Stras going in Cleveland. No reason to not win 2/3.

    ReplyDelete
  25. With Ramos having re-aggravated the Hamstring yet again, and Kurt ice cold at the plate, how about a few more starts for 'Onion'? I know his bat had been cold all season too, but he's hit in the past and he stroked a double yesterday, so maybe he'll heat-up with more starts.

  26. Troy Renck ‏@TroyRenck 20m
Tulo MRI on ribs. Hurt diving. No word on MRI. Fowler day to day. CarGo day to day Weiss said Tulo's ribs been hurting for a week

Boy, if that's how Tulo plays when he's hurt...!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Thinking the same thing NatsLady on Tulo. He's having a MVP worthy year in a premium position.

    ReplyDelete
  28. "get Zimmerman to quit lolly gagging, make sure Davey takes his Alzheimer's meds, etc. and we'll be okay."

    Ha!!

    ReplyDelete
  29. I wish Tulo's college teammate could hit likr him.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Zim off my radar no lollygagging today. Hustled every at bat.

    We made up.

    ReplyDelete
  31. They are freaking out in Atlanta about their teams poor pitching and a team slumping with the bat and they are healthy everywhere but the bullpen.

Rendon getting a lot of love on MLB Radio as well as Desi.

    ReplyDelete
  32. This would be my lineup

    Span
    Rendon
    Harper
    Zim
    LaRoche
    Desmond
    Werth
    Catcher
    Pitcher

    ReplyDelete
  34. NatsJack- much more interested in Tyler. What's up with him?

    ReplyDelete
  35. MNF, that looks real good. I'm more concerned on getting these guys some rest.

    ReplyDelete
  36. "Eric keep us informed"

I would, but I was just quoting NatsJack.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I've liked Tulo ever since he took Clip with him to the All-Star game on his private plane. (Plus it's fun to watch him play.)

    ReplyDelete
  38. Manassas, ultimately yes but let Rendon get a little more settled in. after the break go for it

    ReplyDelete
  39. And I also think perhaps Solano should catch a few more games. Maybe not Sunday.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I hope he gets his confidence back soon. Where is he playing on the field and hitting on the line up?

    ReplyDelete
  41. Tornado in Rockville, there is video on Twitter. Don't know if there was damage. Stay safe, everyone.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Where I Iive we had zero rain! I mean nothing this morning or in the afternoon. So bizarre!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Cubs just had the 14th inning stretch.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Be careful out there. Since when does the DC area get tornados.

    ReplyDelete
  45. "Since when does the DC area get tornados."

We get little ones here pretty regularly, but usually on the east side of the city. MoCo is pretty rare (although I was a few hundred yards from one back in '01 in the same area that got hit today).

    ReplyDelete
  46. Eric, aren't those micro bursts or hurricanes not twisters?

The Orioles are playing in Baltimore. The place is empty and with the piped in sound you'd swear they had 50,000.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Looking ahead to tomorrow (and Saturday). We will be at the game, seats behind the visitor's dugout. 3 women, 1 guy, all wearing Nats gear. Hopefully cheering victories.

    ReplyDelete
  49. ahaha Better an O's game in a tornado than the trolls that live here on a beautiful sunny day at Nationals Park --

    ReplyDelete
  50. "Eric, aren't those micro bursts or hurricanes not twisters?"

Yes, 100% positive, although we get those, too.

  52. Why follow proven losers? What's all that about? Couldn't care less how Espi hits in the bushes -- TMo ? Who cares

    ReplyDelete
  53. The catcher we gave Oakland (Derek Norris) is hitting .197.

    ReplyDelete
  54. We'll see TMo again; but we'll never see Espi -- Thank God! The Lying Poser is Gone

    ReplyDelete
  55. Give Norris time -- he's going to be a beast

    ReplyDelete
  56. Gausman is lighting up the board with 97-98 moving fastball --

    ReplyDelete
  57. Per Wikipedia:
"The surrounding states of Virginia and Maryland average 10 and 6 tornadoes per year."

I don't know how many of those are in the metro area, but it seems we get at least one confirmed touch down per year.

There's a strip of forest that was completely uprooted on the north side of the UMD campus during the '01 event. Now it's basically just a swamp.

That was the event where one touched down a few hundred yards from a friend's house while I was there. That was pretty scary, but the derecho last summer was worse.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I remember that one very well -- tornado went through one of the high rise dorms near Byrd - picked up a car with two sisters and carried them up and over the building -- both dead

    ReplyDelete
  59. How are you watching the game?? Please keep us updated. I see all these guys as numbers 26,26,27,28 etc on the roster. We could need any of them any day. You know of course, that there are people seriously worried about a backup SS. They are all an important part of the Nats-- that much has been proven last year and this year. They can keep us afloat or sink us

    ReplyDelete
  60. Danny Valencia goes deep to left -- Orioles 1 Boston 0

How many arguments did I have with P***** in 2011 over Norris and his BA vs. OBP. He does take a ton of walks which is why the A's still play him. He may also figure it out one day with the bat.

    ReplyDelete
  65. swami, watching on minor league TV. Costs about $40 a year. Handy for times when there is no Nats game or you want to see a prospect (or a guy rehabbing).

Agreed 100% besides the guy isn't that great.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Major league leader in doubles (28) Manny Machado, singes to center driving in run #2.

Machado is hitting .360 with RISP

    ReplyDelete
  68. He has 23 walks on the year, that's pretty impressive in 170 PAs. (39 Ks).

    ReplyDelete
  69. Some here would rather watch the bush leagues (and pay for it too??!!!) rather than watch two excellent big league teams: Red Sox vs. O's. Silly

    ReplyDelete
  70. I AM watching two excellent teams, the Yanks and the A's (on my phone) and Syracuse on my computer.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Hardest to strike out player in the MLB, Nick Markakis of the Orioles, rips rope to center. First and Second, one out. Adam Jones to follow.

Turn off the losers and watch some real ball players

    ReplyDelete
  72. If someone cares that much about the O's-Red Sox game maybe he or she should brave the weather and go to Ballmer...

    ReplyDelete
  73. Espi will never play for the Nats ever again. If they ever play Espi and sit Rendon, the Lerners should step in and get some new management. But even Davey and Rizzo aren't that stupid -- no matter how much in manlove they are with the inept Espinosa

    ReplyDelete
  74. Major league leading HR leader, Davis up with two on, two out --

    ReplyDelete
  75. Less - are you the resident O's fan?

    ReplyDelete
  76. It's hard for me to call the A's "losers." Y'know, being as how they are leading the AL West.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Homerun leader, Davis, singles to center through a drawn in infield to drive in third run of the inning.

    Orioles 3 Red Sox 0

    ReplyDelete
  78. I'm merely reporting on two excellent teams fighting for a division title -- beats a bushy game from Syracuse

    ReplyDelete
  79. The A's are fun to watch in spite of their bogus Moneyball silliness

    ReplyDelete
  80. Yanks are fun to watch too, and I have Adam Warren on my fantasy team today, and he's now pitched four scoreless with 2 Ks...

    ReplyDelete
  81. Weiters strikes out.

End of Three: O's 3 Red Sox 0

    ReplyDelete
  82. Did they ever reveal the conclusion of the MRI Danny had on his hand, wrist and/or shoulder???

    ReplyDelete
  83. I took a chance and put Rendon on my Fantasy team when Gyorko went on the DL -- it's been good so far!!

    ReplyDelete
  84. Yeah, they concluded that danny can't hit! hahaha

    ReplyDelete
  85. Um... The Os? OK... Who cares, indeed.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Danny strikes out looking. Looked low to me.

    ReplyDelete
  87. watching O's game -- Gausman throwing major gas in the high 90's -- nevertheless, he leaves many fb's dead red , his wheels have got to come off soon

    ReplyDelete
  88. Espi K's with bases loaded?? Ah that's my Danny

    ReplyDelete
  89. I don't understand why Nats are resistant to bringing Corey B up and sending an ailing Bernie either on the DL or out to Syracuse. Brown is flat out good

    ReplyDelete
  90. Gausman k's victorino, Pedroia grounds out 1-3

    ReplyDelete
  91. Bernie can't go to Syracuse, no options.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Ortiz takes strike one on the inside

    Ortiz K's last time up

    ReplyDelete
  93. Did Espi strike out looking?

    ReplyDelete
  94. No wants to send Bernie away? He has come on lately...

    ReplyDelete
  95. Time to cut the old shark -- He's 29. He's fast, good arm, great outfielder bunts well

    He just cant hit

    ReplyDelete
  96. Ortiz take Gausman very deep to center

another center cut FB Why don't they listen to me? haha

    ReplyDelete
  97. Why on earth am I seeing an Os play by play in here. Very odd...

    ReplyDelete
  98. Haha Bernie "isn't coming on lately." Bernie is Bernie. time to say goodbye and bring up the young talent: Hello Corey Brown

    ReplyDelete
  99. OK thanks for clarifying Candide.

    ReplyDelete
  100. haha as I predicted: Mike Carp goes deep, right center field.

That's not true. Usually he strikes out swinging with the bases loaded.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Well, I suppose this is how negativity manifests around here when things are going well for the Nats: an Os play by play...

    ReplyDelete
  107. I probably am more interested in anyone's fantasy selections than the o's -- but tonight, its the only game in town

    ReplyDelete
  108. Less Platu, why don't you go to the Birdland blog. They will appreciate your Bird play by play.

This is a Nats blog and even the people with dual allegiance are good enough not to talk Os here.

    Have some respect.

    ReplyDelete
  109. WOW that play at the plate robbing the A's of a walk off.

    ReplyDelete
  110. Now I see where Espi got the idea for his beard: Pedroia sports a beard similar

    ReplyDelete
  111. Coco Crisp (PH) singles, Brandon Moss out at home but the catcher (Stewart) is dazed in the collision. He stays in the game.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Maybe Espi will find is level of hitting mastery in Single A

    ReplyDelete
  113. I'd watch the O's but their broadcasters are mind numbingly boring and relentless homers -- but I suppose that's what their fan base expect. Right, Less?

    ReplyDelete
  114. Sorry to break in on the Orioles coverage here on Nats Insider but we have won two series in a row and did not lose the Mets Series as it ended 1-1.

With the 3 starters scheduled for Cleveland I am thinking we can win our 3rd series in a row and slowly but surely pick up ground on the Braves. Not what I had in mind at the beginning of the year but it is a new and exciting way to look at the year. We can be the little engine that could and slowly but surely move to the top of the mountain so all the good little girls and boys can get their just rewards.

    Go Nats!!!

    ReplyDelete
  115. Warren, who is on FUMES, strikes out Rosales, and we go to the 16th.

    ReplyDelete
  116. Valencia doubles off the outstretched glove of the running and diving Ellsbury. Would have been a helluva catch

    ReplyDelete
  117. "Sorry to break in on the Orioles coverage here on Nats Insider"

    As you should be!!!

    ReplyDelete
  118. Carp and F.P. aren't shameless Homers??? haha

    ReplyDelete
  119. I also try not to watch the O's but the epitome of "homerism" is when the chose the Player Of The Game and it is always an Oriole no matter what the score or situation. What a joke. I do like their lineup however and am glad we don't face them again the rest of the year.

    ReplyDelete
  120. Sheesh now it's dueling coverage... I guess I'll dip. No offense but atbat is way better at this than y'all ;)

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  124. Bernie appeared to hurt his shoulder today. I am interested in any player that wears a uniform of the Nationals organization and I am interested in some former Nats who I was fond of and wish well. I am not interested in the american league team to our north -- I am sure that they have a discussion blog during games. I will link to the gameday - did not know they did it for the minor leagues. I may also invest in the minor league computer games. I love following the kids.

  126. Well, I tried to drown out the O's coverage... Gotta leave for a while. Enjoy!

  127. I just tweeted Mark about this Troll. You ask the guy nicely to stop his play by play and he doesn't care.

    ReplyDelete
  128. Platu - it now is the only way, but like others, I really bought into the hype at the beginning of the year about how great we would be and had to do a major expectation adjustment. I have waited 68 years for a World Series in this town and was hoping this would be the year. Have not given up but it was pretty bleak there for a couple weeks.

Rendon, the bullpen additions and a couple of our regulars getting on track have slowly but surely made me think we still have a chance.

Again, Go Nats! Win 2 of 3 from the tribe

    ReplyDelete
  129. Swami or Natsjack - I get the audio mlb gameday for some ridiculously cheap price per month. Are you guys saying I can also find minor league games? If so, how?

    ReplyDelete
  130. Do tell - I am interested also. I love minor league baseball.

    ReplyDelete
  131. Espinosa is batting .500 in the Minors. Bring him back. He does have a high K rate which is also .500.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  135. sjm, it looks like there isn't any radio broadcast of the minor league games (http://www.milb.com/multimedia/audio.jsp?sid=t552&home=t552&away=t512),
but you can follow Syracuse's play-by-play here: http://www.milb.com/gameday/index.jsp?gid=2013_06_13_tolaaa_syraaa_1&mode=gameday

  136. As always NatsJack - thanks

We met briefly before a game a year ago. Would love to spend more time the next time you come up. We have beer and music and beer and baseball in common, not to mention beer. I am just a few years older and am jealous of your tatoo even though someone else on here thinks its a sign of .... well, never mind.

    Go Nats!!

    ReplyDelete
  137. And it looks like Espi's been taken out of the game - replaced at 2nd by Brian Bocock.

    ReplyDelete
  138. They said he would only play 3 innings in his first game. I really do hope they take their time with this. I for one do not need to see him rushed back. They need to send him a message here (in my opinion).

    ReplyDelete
  139. Gonad: why go personal? why the insults? People are having fun - play by play on the chiefs, the A's and a little O's. Im a nats fan. I think that's clear.

Yet you're calling me a Troll? Reporting me to Mark? How old are you, 12, 13?

  147. Meanwhile, away from the sandbox ...

Taylor Jordan just allowed his first hit in the sixth inning against Richmond. The hit came on a grounder to third. On the radio you could hear the Harrisburg crowd booing the official scorer.

Jordan plunked the first batter of the game, then retired 15 in a row. Jordan's only problem is that he sat awhile between innings. Harrisburg is up 9-0.

Looks like this kid's on the fast track.

  150. Drew- I know you & Natsjack are high on this kid. Do you see him moving up soon?

  151. Drew, that's good to know on Taylor Jordan. It will be interesting how Karns pitches in his next start at Harrisburg.

  152. Ha, I was just about to say wow look at the Yanks/As....

Less Platu - no one here cares about the Sox/Os.... Since you want to talk about them, why don't you go find a fan board of theirs and discuss the game....

I'm glad for Tyler Moore... I always figured he would be the guy to take over for Adam LaRoche....

  155. I have NEVER called someone stupid. Compare that to you calling people fascists, idiots, teenage girls and trying to fight them. You are clearly the troll.

  156. T Jordan.... The guy who I've been wondering about becuz he had the sick stats....

Seriously though, Proctor, Gonat, thanks for disrupting the terrible Os broadcast ;)

  159. They did and he challenged them all to a throw down. Thought we might be starting a Nationals Insider Fight Club except the challenged showed more maturity then our boy Les. First rule of Fight Club is don't talk about Fight Club.

  166. Ryan Perry lowered his ERA under 7.75 He's certainly a candidate to be removed from the 40 man.

  169. Six innings into his sixth start at Harrisburg, Taylor Jordan has a 0.71 ERA at AA and he's about to go 5-0.

Earlier this year he was 2-1 at Potomac with a 1.24 ERA when he was promoted. Tonight's performance should drop his cumulative ERA below 1.00.

Jordan was a 9th round pick in 2009 out of Brevard CC in Florida. He was 9-4 at Hagerstown when he lost a year to Tommy John surgery.

I would guess they'll have him finish this year at Harrisburg.

His recovery, after those of JZim and Stras, gives me hope that Slingin' Sammy Solis will return to form.

  170. Can anyone clear this up for me - I thought Espinosa was supposed to get his shoulder repaired and his 'broken wrist or hand' repaired. yet he playing? they're not considering bringing him back I hope?

  171. A's won... My dad is some kinda mad... He is Yanks and Nats fan....

  172. If the A's walked off, then the Yanks win by way of forfeit!! haha

  173. AJ Cole tonight vs B-more's Frederick:

    7 IP 4 hits 2 bb 0 runs 10 Ks

    ReplyDelete
  174. A J Cole has a 4 hit shutout going into the 7th for Potomac.
Also Billy Burns now has 33 SB's and has only been caught 3 times.

Did somebody step in something? It smells funny in here.

  175. Espi had MRI's-- apparently no one is worried about the shoulder. He is on the DL - this is officially a rehab start. He got a magical cortisone shot and is clear to begin baseball activities- 3 innings today. It is unclear how long he will stay in AAA.

  176. Swami at 9:09... I'm in!!

  177. Drew- thanks for the excellent review. Very exciting.

Steve J. - they never said anything about Danny's shoulder. He got a cortisone shot in his wrist & was sent to AAA to work things out. As I said earlier, I hope it's quite a lengthy time.

    Swami, will ignore with ease.

  178. I am grateful for the Chief's info, NatsJack and others. Thanks.

LessPlatu, I wonder who you used to post as. Regardless, I know now to ignore all you post (and you post a lot) just like I learned for some others. I suggest we all do the same.

  181. Although he'll totally deny it.....no ones seems to be recognizing the unmistakable presence of one "Poppy McPoop". He's a master at stinking up a Nats blog and totally gets off on it.

  182. oh man, what a child you are less whatever... go to bed. this is an awesome site and yes, i am new (as i think you are but could be wrong) but have some respect. we don't need you to read play by play of the O's or any other game. You may, MAY have some insight if you are a real baseball fan but you are not showing that to be true...enough of the hate.

  183. Mark gets rid of a few trolls and this guy pops up. What a shame.

  184. For those who regularly watch prospects. Thoughts on Billy Burns and Steven Souza? Big league futures? they both have great stats this year and also did last year.

    ReplyDelete
  185. There has not been one post about the actual Nats in a while. So how about Desi these days??? How many rehab assignments do you think Bryce will do? Nice series, right??

  187. Swami/JaneB - I'm with ya...

But in other Nats news - I wonder who gets sent down when SS comes back.... I keep forgetting that Mattheus is on the DL...

Seems like the BP is coming together... Also wondering about C Garcia....
