Game 79: Nats at Mets

Mark Zuckerman / NATS INSIDER
NEW YORK — Good afternoon from Citi Field, where tonight the Nationals open a weekend series against the Mets, beginning with an awfully tough matchup against the dynamic Matt Harvey.

The Nats have already gotten a good look at Harvey this season; he beat Stephen Strasburg with an electric performance here back in April. So they know they've got their work cut out for them tonight. They can only hope Ross Detwiler is up to the challenge himself after some recent shaky outings.

Still waiting on the Nationals' lineup, which I don't believe will include Bryce Harper. Though I suppose you never know...

Updates to come...

7:11 p.m. — We are underway on a muggy night in the Big Apple. Matt Harvey starts off Denard Span with a fastball for strike one.

7:15 p.m. — And just like that, Harvey retires the side, striking out Denard Span on a curveball, striking out Anthony Rendon on a slider and getting Ryan Zimmerman (who was identified on the scoreboard here as Jordan Zimmermann) to pop out to end the top of the first.

7:30 p.m. — Harvey vs. this Nats lineup doesn't really seem like a fair fight. He's retired all six batters faced so far, striking out four. Only Zimmerman and Ian Desmond have made contact. Gonna be a battle for these guys all night.

7:42 p.m. — Not to be outdone, Ross Detwiler has been sharp himself through two innings, allowing one hit and one walk. Detwiler has three strikeouts, including Omar Quintanilla to end the bottom of the second, leaving this game scoreless as we move to the third.

7:51 p.m. — Make it 9 up, 9 down for Harvey. Kurt Suzuki did smoke a line drive to left (caught by Eric Young Jr.) and Detwiler impressively battled through a long at-bat before striking out to end the third. The only saving grace at this point: Harvey has thrown 43 pitches, which really isn't that many but is probably still more than you'd expect after three perfect innings.

8:06 p.m. — Make it 12 up, 12 down for Harvey. He did get a big assist from Byrd, who made a fantastic, diving catch of Rendon's sinking liner to right. That could be something we refer back to by the end of the night. Otherwise, the right-hander has been brilliant, striking out six. But give Detwiler credit for going toe-to-toe with him so far. Ross has three scoreless innings in the books, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out three. Scoreless in the middle of the fourth.

8:20 p.m. — The bad news: The Nats trail 1-0 after the Mets scored an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth, the byproduct of Ian Desmond's first error in 60 games. It was a tough one, too, with Desmond taking a bad hop off his chest and then having to rush a throw to first, which skipped off LaRoche's glove and ricocheted off Byrd's leg to allow Wright to score. The good news: Detwiler really showed some intestinal fortitude to get out of that inning without anybody else scoring, despite having runners on second and third with nobody out. Of course, one run tonight off Harvey is going to be easier said than done.

8:31 p.m. — Well, there goes the perfect game. In a big way. Desmond crushed an 0-1 pitch off the facade of the second deck in left field for his 14th homer of the season. Just like that, it's a 1-1 game.

8:46 p.m. — So much for any positive momentum off the Desmond homer. Detwiler gave the Mets two runs back in the bottom of the fifth on three hits, including Byrd's double to left and Satin's subsequent single to left. Bernadina had a chance on the second one to throw Byrd out at the plate, but his throw sailed way high. So just like that, the Nats are trailing again, now down 3-1 after five.

8:54 p.m. — And that'll do it for Detwiler, who gets the hook after only five innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits while throwing 98 pitches. He just hasn't been the same guy since coming back from the DL, not exactly sure why that is. Meanwhile, not many big-league pitchers have made Anthony Rendon look silly over the last three weeks. But Matt Harvey is not many big-league pitchers, so he did indeed make Rendon look bad striking him out to end the top of the sixth with Span (who tripled) stranded on third. It's still 3-1 Mets as Ross Ohlendorf enters for the Nats in the bottom of the sixth.

9:16 p.m. — Not that he hasn't made everybody in the Nats lineup look bad tonight, but Harvey has really made Werth look bad. Three strikeouts in three at-bats for the veteran right fielder. Harvey has 11 Ks now through seven, with the Mets still leading 3-1 at the stretch.

9:30 p.m. — Josh Satin is killing the Nats. Yes, Josh Satin. He's now 3-for-3 with a walk, two doubles and two RBI. He's given the Mets a 4-1 lead as we move to the eighth. On the bright side, Harvey is done for the night, so the Nats get a crack at the New York bullpen.

9:53 p.m. — I guess that really was a bright side for the Nats, because they just stormed back to tie the game off three Mets relievers. Bernadina singled off David Aardsma. Span doubled off Josh Edgin. Rendon drew a two-out walk off Brandon Lyon. And Zimmerman cleared the bases with a rocket of a double to left-center, maybe the hardest he's hit a ball in weeks. Just like that, this game is tied, 4-4, heading to the bottom of the eighth.

10:10 p.m. — Man, what a pick by LaRoche on Suzuki's bounced throw right up the first-base line, with Young running right in his way. That nifty glovework sends this game to the ninth inning, still tied 4-4.

10:20 p.m. — Ian Desmond, ladies and gentlemen. He just delivered another clutch hit to put the Nats ahead, following up Werth's leadoff double off Bobby Parnell with his own two-bagger. Desmond then scored on Suzuki's sac fly, a big insurance run that gives the Nats a 6-4 lead with Drew Storen entering for the bottom of the ninth (Rafael Soriano has made three straight appearances and is unavailable).

10:30 p.m. — Ballgame. Nats win 6-4, coming back from three runs down for only the second time this season. Clippard gets his 6th win. Storen gets his 2nd save. Desmond gets his 10th game-winning RBI.

  1. Heavy storm right now in Shaw. If they were playing here, they wouldn't be playing.

  2. I was reading an article in the NY Post (I think it was there or could have been the Daily News) a few days ago and it basicly said that the Mets have three "real" major league players. The are has been or never was guys.

Look at Eric Young, cut by the Rockies starting for the Mets. Buck is slowing down.

I use to be a Mets fan before the Nationals came to town, glad I'm not right now...

  5. With the Nats pathetic offense, Harvey should have a field day tonight.

    ReplyDelete
  6. While nobody is looking, the Marlins and the Mets have been playing the best baseball in the NL East recently.

    ReplyDelete
  7. I'm strangely excited and confident about this game.

For better and worse, this feeling has historically had no correlation with whether or not we win or lose...

    ReplyDelete
  8. Two runs can win it....just...two...runs....

    ReplyDelete
  9. Haha!!!! Hope we see fierce WBC Det tonight. And I am sick and tired of people anointing these barely experienced guys as hall of famers. This guy needs to be brought down a peg. You know it will happen. None of these guys can keep it up forever. Medlin last year, even Stras-- give it time. They are good, but not perfect. Time for a reminder that he is human.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Any news on Harper's availability

    ReplyDelete

  11. Swami,

This guy is the real deal. I never thought Medlen was the next Maddux but Harvey has been the co best pitcher in the league this year and it's no fluke.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Check out Maddux' line from this game:
    2.1 IP, 11 H, 8 ER, 0BB, 2 SO, 1HR

    It can happen to anyone!

    ReplyDelete
  13. Harvey is absolutely the real deal--but he will get blown up eventually. It hasn't happened yet, but it will.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Agreed- even Verlander has off nights. Seems like every year there is the next, newest, anointed pitcher of the season. Adjustments get made. He will still be good, just not as good as he seems to be now. Flavor of the month.

    ReplyDelete

  15. David,

Everyone does including the best hall of famers and including our 3 aces. The main point is that on any given night he is likely to be very hard to beat.

    ReplyDelete
  16. But then, we find struggling veterans, retreads and minor league call ups hard to beat, so this will be different how??

    ReplyDelete
  17. Zack Wheeler is very good too but young.

    ReplyDelete
  18. It's the Mets version of stras/Zimm perhaps. (Harvey/Wheeler)

Davey says Bryce Harper will hit indoors at Bowie today. Will get today off, play tomorrow with Harrisburg. Could still rejoin #Nats Monday

Ramos caught 3 innings today in the GCL.

  20. Let's face it folks, it's not just that the offense is bad--- there are just amazing pitchers out there. Across MLB, pitching is good- offense is down. Start your list of really good pitchers and see how long it gets in a hurry. Add to that the outstanding defense like we have just seen. We did, however just take a series from a first place team. And we came close to sweeping. It is tough to face these pitchers might after night. We seem to have the worst time with Gee, though.

    ReplyDelete

Davey said he expects Taylor Jordan to get at least 2-3 starts, a few chances to show what he's got.

    Interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Trevor Bauer getting plastered in the first inning in Chicago. They have a SS playing LF which doesn't help. I didn't realize he always pitches from the stretch.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Trevour Bauer has thrown 50 pitches in the first inning for the Indians...

    ReplyDelete
  24. 2-3 good starts is what Davey needs.

    ReplyDelete
  25. FWIW, a commenter in an MLBTR article said he heard directly from Larry Baer the Giants were close to closing a deal for Nolasco.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  27. And he's out. He lasted .2 innings. Gave up 5 runs, threw 50 pitches. And the bases are still loaded.

    ReplyDelete
  28. He has an unorthodox warm up, pitches from the stretch and has some other interesting habits. Some teams apparently did not want to work with him unless he changed.

    ReplyDelete
  29. NatsLady, what did I say about Bauer on Wednesday. Brought up too soon.

  31. Just as well on Harper if it's like this in NY. Pouring again. This weather should hit up there in a couple of hours. Don't need the Kid slipping and sliding.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Our old friend Cole Kimball just took the mound for Syracuse. Hope he can pitch well and get himself back in the mix.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Sofa. LOL. Buster Posey said yesterday the Dodgers were getting him (Nolasco, I mean.) I expect we are not in the bidding...

Ghost, I hope we are not doing the same with Jordan--bringing him up too soon.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Willy Ray is playing ball again in Florida!!!! Yay!! Take it easy, though, big guy!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Ramos is expected back this Thursday, Swami. We are very close to being healthy. Until someone else goes down.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Who is on your " most likely to go on the DL" list?? My number one candidate is Jayson Werth for sure with the classic groin injury.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I'd say Werth, but Werth actually got around pretty well yesterday. He looked MUCH better than he did the two prior days.

    ReplyDelete
  38. You know, I thought so. Can you get a magical cortisone shot in that area? Does it just improve like that? I have noticed that he is not selling out on any catches.

    ReplyDelete
  39. swami, I vote for Det. He hasn't had a really solid start since he came back. It took him longer than I expected to come back and I wonder if he's completely healed. It seems to have been another one of those situations where he was going to try to "work through" it, then he doesn't make his next start, then he's on the DL, etc. etc.

    Didn't RZimm's take a lot longer? Oblique, I mean.

Well, how do you like that? Cleveland tied it up.

    ReplyDelete
  40. NatsLady- could very well be- and yes, obliques are long. Remember Desi? I love it when Det has that killer mentality. But if he is being careful or favoring something then his mechanics will be off. Maybe playing with it earlier did mess with his mechanics. He can be so Ana Ing when he is on. I want to see that again.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Garcia came in, they had no chance. Boy does he fool them.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Will be interesting to see how the Braves fare against the DBacks...

    ReplyDelete
  43. DBags a first place team. Good for us to get two of three- hate losing in extras, though, especially at home.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Did we bring Moore back up just to sit -- again? And to sit behind Bernadina? I don't get it.

I don't get a lot of this these guys are doing these days.

    ReplyDelete
  45. It will be great to get Ramos back and of course Harper. Let the offense begin!! and if not, let the excuses stop!

    ReplyDelete
  46. I wonder if old town Alexandria will wash away tonight along with Nats Park....line stalled over there now.

Hopefully storms will die down a little in CitiField since the game must go on.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Moore barreled up a ball in each of the last two nights. Maybe it's a left / right thing or the size of the outfield?

    ReplyDelete
  48. Once again feeling guilty that we totally missed all the weather. Feeling bad for those on the road right now.

    ReplyDelete
  49. It might be ok in Shaw, Swami, but the Nats bowl is probably under water right now

    ReplyDelete
  50. Been watching the radar-- good thing the Nats are not here. But the PNats got cancelled up in Wilmington. Seriously- dry as a bone south of Manassas.

Interesting that Wei-Yin Chen in making rehab start tomorrow for Bowie. So Bryce Harper will get ABs vs. a big-league arm. #Nats #Orioles

    That's good

  62. Nice jeff. I live about a mile south of there.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I don't know if Det vs. Harvey fall sinto reverse lock territory, but this game has 2-1 written all over it.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Gun give away, eh. Wow...

    ReplyDelete
  65. LIVE FROM NEW YORK! GYFNG! GO BATS BEAT HARVEY! GO DET!

    ReplyDelete
  66. I'm hoping that we win... But I've no faith, unfortunately....

But still, lets go Nats.... Win this game!

    ReplyDelete
  67. Chiefs also having a 2nd amendment night--bring your NRA membership card. I kid you not.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Are the Chiefs giving away free guns though?

    ReplyDelete
  69. Which Z'man's batting stats did they put on the scoreboard?

    ReplyDelete
  70. You all have something against the second amendment?

    ReplyDelete
  71. Well...I'll defer comment on the second amendment. I have a problem with giving away free guns though.

    ReplyDelete
  72. nice area...Franklins in Hyattsville often has good Nats pub

    ReplyDelete
  73. So...after the White Sox went up 5-0 on Cleveland because of Bauer's awful start, the Indians have not only come back...they lead 14-5.

    ReplyDelete
  75. DP, free guns, huh...hate to be the home plate ump at the Chiefs game!

    ReplyDelete
  76. Desi the only Nat with more than one hit off Harvey. Makes sense. Desi likes the fastball.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Years ago I worked for a company with headquarters in NY and a plant in LA. At the plant they gave guns away as incentives. I admit, my urban heart was totally shocked but it was explained to me that it didn't mean anything more than giving away bowling balls. I don't have a problem with bowling balls...

    ReplyDelete
  78. Ross, don't give bases away!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  79. I fear this evening is not going to be kind to the Nationals. Stay tuned though, we might see a no hitter!

    ReplyDelete
  80. Werth isn't 100%, but he's moving way better than he was 2 days ago. He was moving fairly well yesterday too.

    ReplyDelete
  81. As a died-in-the-wool (and cotton, silk and cashmere) Nats fan, I can say in all honesty anyone who thinks anyone other than Matt Harvey will start the ASG for the NL at Citifield is living in a world I don't recognize. (Now let's hope that reverse psychology kicks in.)

    ReplyDelete
  82. with this rain & slick field, i for one am glad harp ain't on it and would prefer at some point, werth ain't on it either.

    ReplyDelete
  83. nice AB Det, get that pitch count up.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Detwiler makes up 25% of the pitches thrown by Matt Harvey. That's a nice approach.

    ReplyDelete
  85. that was one happy foul ball catching fan! good for him.

    ReplyDelete
  86. jeff - "nice area...Franklins in Hyattsville often has good Nats pub"

Yeah? I don't go there too often these days...will have to check that out.

As for 2A, I am glad we have the right. With any luck some NRA member's who are felons will show up for free guns. Only 2/3s of this paragraph is on he level.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Ross doesn't look like Harvey but he is getting the job done so far.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Oh yeah, jeff, the DC Brau brewery is just down Bladensburg Road. Fun place to go on a Saturday.

As for the game, it seems like Det is doing quite well so far! Just now getting to watching, though; was listening while taking a walk with my son.

It's really crazy how many sinkers Det throws...

    ReplyDelete
  89. I admit, my urban heart was totally shocked but it was explained to me that it didn't mean anything more than giving away bowling balls. I don't have a problem with bowling balls...

Need to get out of the city more often.

    ReplyDelete
  90. as long as we (me) are on the subject of foul balls, i was at the 1995 (i think it was 95) ASG in old Veterans stadium in Philly and me & my buddy caught three foul balls off the bat...it was un-real, we were down the R field line and had multiple Phillies fans tell us they have been to games for 30 years and never caught a one...for me & my buddy, it was our first time there and we got three and trust me, we told them that too...very memorable...still have the one i caught.

    ReplyDelete
  91. We are going to get robbed by the METS D now???????

    ReplyDelete
  92. Kinda looks like we're starting to see the breaking ball...

    ReplyDelete
  93. Last night was the unluckiest BABIP the Nats have had all year. Keep making contact Nats, the luck will turn!

    ReplyDelete
  94. Er...maybe not.

"Eric, I like my beers cold."

    ???

You can get 'em cold at the brewery. On tap.

    ReplyDelete
  95. >Keep making contact Nats, the luck will turn!

Yeah, the making contact part isn't so easy either.

    ReplyDelete
  96. So, is that no hitter Harvey has going? Wouldn't want to jinx it if it were. That's why I'm asking.

    ReplyDelete
  97. All the beat reporters have done their job in jinxing him.

    ReplyDelete
  98. sorry but ALR has to have that.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Oh, turtles. Desi hasn't made an error in how long?????? It's sopping wet.

    ReplyDelete
  100. That is Desi's first error in 59 games. And I don't think he deserves the error for that.

    ReplyDelete
  101. PB, I agree, it was right in his glove. Also, Ryan did not react quickly on the double. He might not have gotten it, but he was just slow.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Well he deserves it for the throw for sure. So i guess it doesn't matter.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Channel 9 has moved over to a weather warning for southern MD. I blame them.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Marlon Byrd advances from second to third on a double...

    ReplyDelete
  105. Difference so far is the Nats not making the fielding plays, RZim, Desi, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  106. OK, back to the game, everyone can relax now...heh

    ReplyDelete
  107. NL, yep, agree on Zim, it was hard hit, but just knock it down...need to keep this inning to 2 or less.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Guys on the radio saying that Ryan Zimmerman was playing way too shallow on David Wright.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Janus, Topper Shutt is the man!! why the hate?

    ReplyDelete
  110. This comment has been removed by the author.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Come on Det, it's the PITCHER. Throw strikes.

    ReplyDelete
  112. "Janus, Topper Shutt is the man!! why the hate?"

I'm guessing cuz he's the one who was yapping during the weather alert interruption when the run scored ;)

    ReplyDelete
  113. Great job getting out of the jam. But we need a hit before we can worry about scoring.

    ReplyDelete
  114. OK, Ross did GREAT. Now get him some runs!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  115. there you go Det, nice!! come on nats bats!!

    ReplyDelete
  116. All considered, that was a nice containment job by Detwiler. Again, Mets making the tough plays, RZim and Desi and Werth didn't. 1 run given up, nice outcome.

    ReplyDelete
  117. eric/steal/not eat/face, i figured as much.

    ReplyDelete
  118. 2 doubles, a 2 base error and a walk = 1 run?

    ReplyDelete
  119. Rosenbaum has given up 5 earned in 3 innings. And the Chiefs are getting nada against this CY Young with his 6++ ERA. Danny hasn't struck out, though.

    ReplyDelete
  120. Byrd is the dude my buddies and I happy-heckled to a great game back in 06 or whatever season it was he was with us.

Maybe he thought of us tonight when he stopped at third ;)

    ReplyDelete
  121. You see that there that Harvey did to Werth? That is what Garcia was doing (lesser hitters, I know).

    ReplyDelete
  122. see you later & there goes the no hitter...DESI

    ReplyDelete
  123. LOL, Bernadina "didn't get the best jump" gets ball--think I've heard that before.

    ReplyDelete
  124. Roger Bernadina: the king of making the most routine play into a highlight reel.

    ReplyDelete
  125. would bryce have made that throw to the plate?

    ReplyDelete
  126. Marlon Byrd has killed us this year.

    ReplyDelete
  127. waddu, pretty good throw I thought.

    ReplyDelete
  128. Harper has no chance on the first play. He probably gets Byrd at the plate though.

    ReplyDelete
  129. now on that one, waddu, yea, i think bryce gets him but who knows.

    ReplyDelete
  130. Marlon Byrd on offense, defense and baserunning showing the Nats something.

    ReplyDelete
  131. I don't know about the first one, but Bryce would have definitely gotten the second one. Detwiler suddenly very hittable.

    ReplyDelete
  132. Byrd, who was suspended last year for PED's is having a comeback season- what a joke.

    ReplyDelete
  133. ghost, always have liked Marlon as a hitter.

    ReplyDelete
  134. Come on, Det! Focus. Bernadina's throw was awful. You get your catcher hurt throwing in that high.

    ReplyDelete
  135. The Indians-White Sox game is 18-10. And it's the first game of a doubleheader.

    ReplyDelete
  136. We need to get Harvey out of the game. Their bullpen is awful

    ReplyDelete
  137. Yeah, after tonight I'm thinking Det just isn't quite 100% yet. Seemed like the top of the 4th required his reserves and he couldn't quite bring his game in the 5th.

    ReplyDelete
  138. That curve to Lombo was ***NASTY***

    ReplyDelete
  139. 19-10. It's the top of the 8th and they;ve been playing 3.5 hours already.

    ReplyDelete
  140. here comes a Span special - ground ball to 1b if he even hits it.

    ReplyDelete
  141. Span with his patented triple!!!! I take back everything I ever said!!!

    ReplyDelete
  142. paul brandt, you did it, you are an idiot, love, paul brandt

    ReplyDelete
  143. Well, Harvey took Rendon to school. Learn up, kid.

    ReplyDelete
  144. give Harvey credit, he's pitched well.

    ReplyDelete
  145. Harvey is due to get lit up eventually--unfortunately it's not tonight.

    I'm just happy we're not being no-hit.

  146. I don't know what is worse. watching the Nats trying to hit or going 6 straight innings listening to FP go ON and ONNNNNNNNNNNN about Matt Harvey. Matt Harvey, Paul Harvey, Lee Harvey Oswalt, it doesn't matter. Its the METS CMON!!

  147. You have to admit that these circumstances have been extremely stressful tonight. Those five innings must have seemed like ten. Let's not forget how much Det had to put into that bases loaded jam. Sometimes it's not the pitches or innings, it's the stress involved. The atmosphere, the weather, the opposing pitcher, paltry offense -- all very stressful. I don't think he is 100 % yet either, though. He is certainly not built back up stamina wise. He was out a lot longer than Stras.

  148. Rendon goes down. Actually, it's more like Harvey is flat out putting us down, but I really wish Anthony could've got us one back there. Nuts.

  149. Whew, the world has not gone crazy. Danny struck out swinging.

  150. Surprised they're using Ohlendorf tonight and not tomorrow when Jordan is pitching.

    ReplyDelete
  151. back below .500 40 losses. not to allstar break yet. What a long disappointing season. UGHHHHH

    ReplyDelete
  152. Naw, he'll used Stammen tomorrow if Jordan gets in trouble. Davey wants to win tomorrow and Sunday. He doesn't trust Ohlendorf--YET.

    ReplyDelete
  153. I'm not seeing it as a disappointing season. It is a long season and there is a lot of ball to play. Maybe even tonight.

  154. Casper Wells, the outfielder, is pitching in the Sox-Indians game now. 400th pitch is about to be thrown. 19-10 score now.

    ReplyDelete
  155. I don't think this is a disappointing season at all. Our boys are gritting it out, winning games they have no business winnning. Rizzo/Davey forced to clean out all the excess like Henry/Duke/Espinosa and run a mean ship. You never know who is going to pitch the next game, who will come through, who will stub their toe. I'm loving it. A lot better this way than cruising until August and then folding.

  156. Det was not that bad, it has been our offense that has been bad. Yes, Harvey is a good pitcher but come on, make adjustments, get his pitch count up, work the counts, get some walks, make things happen all known as small ball Davey, that is how we can get back into this game...best AB of the night was Det.

    p.s. that a boy Zim

  157. You know, I was thinking philosophically. That's what you do when your team is struggling. I heard Strassie saying how much he had learned this season, I heard Tyler Moore saying the same thing. Last year everything just happened, things worked. This year adversity is all around. But our team is young and I really feel that they are learning and developing more now. If this team is going to move forward and be a factor in the coming years then they need to keep developing and toughening up. I think that is what is happening and I think that is why it is happening.

  158. Wow, a leadoff man aboard for the Nats!

    ReplyDelete
  159. Nats Lady and Paul -- I am on your page.

    ReplyDelete
  160. For weeks on end last year we had exactly the same line up. Anyone could have managed the team. Now you have to see if Davey can still do it. We get to see what mid-season corrections Rizzo will or will not make.

  161. Visions of game 4. Similar at bat, just as little hope...

    ReplyDelete
  162. Jack, they keep saying that they "are done with this team." Oh that it were so.

    ReplyDelete
  163. THey are worried about Desi....

    ReplyDelete
  164. good battle by Werth, glass half full & i bet the guy is 80%, if that...team mates see that and will remember it in September & October.

    ReplyDelete
  165. Harvey afraid of Desmond. At least we have someone opposing pitchers fear (before Harper comes back).

    ReplyDelete
  166. I like swinging 3-0 there. Shark isn't going to do anything. Desmond was our best shot, 3-0 is usually a good pitch to hit. He just missed it.

    ReplyDelete
  167. I don't like swinging on 3-0 even if he had the green light. Go ahead and let him walk you.

    ReplyDelete
  168. ok, sorry but i have a problem with desi swinging on a 3-0 count down 2.

    ReplyDelete
  169. Harvey is as advertised, ain't he?

    ReplyDelete
  170. PS I like swami's train of thought. And Natsjack, too.

    ReplyDelete
  171. You can knock Harvey out of the game. Take the ball Desi and work the 3-1 and hopefully you get a mistake pitch.

    ReplyDelete
  172. "Harvey is as advertised, ain't he?"

He's ridiculous...seriously. I forgot he could get up to 97.

    ReplyDelete
  173. I am duly impressed with him, Jane.

    ReplyDelete
  174. "He's ridiculous...seriously. I forgot he could get up to 97."

Up to 97? He's thrown 100+ this year.

    ReplyDelete
  175. Make this man a starter. Seriously.
