The Nationals have missed their No. 5 starter and gladly welcome him back with open arms this afternoon as they seek to win their second straight against the Rockies and take this series. With Detwiler officially activated off the DL, reliever Erik Davis has been optioned to Class AAA Syracuse. That means Ross Ohlendorf is sticking around for now, though the Nats will need to make another roster move on Sunday when Stephen Strasburg returns.
After watching his club score five runs last night against Jorge De La Rosa and Co., Davey Johnson is going with a similar lineup against fellow lefty Jeff Francis. That means Jeff Kobernus makes his second straight start in left field, batting second. The only change: Kurt Suzuki returns behind the plate, batting eighth.
Though I'm not in Denver for this series, I will be watching alongside all of you this afternoon. And I'll have an Instant Analysis post as soon as the game ends, so be sure to check back for that...

Too bad for Little Clip, but he was just not ready. Interesting that they are keeping Ohlendorf. He can't pitch for a few days, but if they sent him down he would have to stay there for 10 days, or he could take his opt-out.
ReplyDeleteWelcome back Det.... Im glad to see Kobernus getting more plate appearances...
ReplyDeleteI would have rathered Mini Clip stay up and Cedeno go back down...

ReplyDeleteWhile last season's answer appeared to have been a chicken ("sacrifice a live . . ." or "a whole (KFC) chicken just like you ordered" or "soup" or "mode" or whatever), this season it appears to be gunpowder ("Have to wake up bats!").
Mule senses a bat-awakening in progress. Offerings of cigars and rum are also indicated.
Thanks be given to the baseball gods (or Jobu, or whomever); may the excitement continue to build !
Cards scored a run against Harvey with small-ball. Wonder if that will be enough for Wainwright.
ReplyDeleteI'm wondering if Haren doesn't get an injured pinky finger on his right hand between now and Sunday. Not wishing it on him of course but just saying.......
ReplyDeleteFrom the Twitter feed:
ReplyDeletePer Davey, Stephen Strasburg (lat) had a clean bullpen session today and was given the clear by trainers. Still on track to return Sunday.
Woohoo! Next up: info on Harper, hopefully tomorrow, and hopefully appreciably along the same lines!
I forgot the game started at 3 today.... I guess I will be listening to Charlie and Dave on XM until I can get home and watch the game...
ReplyDeleteI had no idea Jeff Francis was having such a bad year. Walks and HRs are way up. The Nats need to show patience, get on base, and play for the Earl Weaver special today. They could put up a big number.
ReplyDeleteThe Post schedule page shows Haren on Sunday and Stras on Monday ... does Davey want to save SS for the Phils or is Monday still correct/
ReplyDelete>I had no idea Jeff Francis was having such a bad year.
ReplyDeleteOh great...these guys have had our freaking number this season.
ReplyDeleteDaveB,
Everywhere I checked they have Stas on Sunday in Cleveland and Haren in Phily on Monday.
ReplyDeleteWainwright is a free agent after this year. Right?
Wow.
Wright broke up the no-hitter after a chancy (not nessarily wrong) call by the ump. They didn't show reply if he checked his swing and they didn't show pitch f/x to see if it was a strike.
ReplyDeleteMrs B ... MLB on XM usually broadcasts the home team announcers. Does JFK have an XM station?
ReplyDeleteAnd now Wainwright walks a guy. Was he mentally in the dugout when he thought he had the 3rd strike on Wright? Luckily, a long flyout to center by Duda (had a nice sound, you could see Wainwright was worried).
ReplyDeleteWainright signed a 5 year extension in March for $97.5 million.
ReplyDelete
ReplyDeleteNever mind. Wainright signed a big long term contract in March. ($97.5 mil for 5 years).
ReplyDeleteI owe you a drink phil.
Sorry to see Clip II go back down.
ReplyDeleteHe'll be back. Cursed with not throwing with his left arm like Cedeno, I guess???
ReplyDeleteDoc,
Cedeno is only buying 3 more days until Stras returns I think.
BTW, from the other threads, but Re: Davey coaching in the ASG--am I remembering wrong, or is it not established convention to have the managers of the other division winners on the staff, if they accept?
ReplyDelete
ReplyDeleteSec.3
I think it's fairly discretionary but it's generally considered good manners to have the home manager invited to the staff.
And he didn't do that?
ReplyDeleteBalkin Bob Davidson and John Hirschbeck on the bases. Somehow I missed that the first two games....just hope nobody on the Nats gives Hirschbeck the opportunity to repeat his Pittsburgh performance when he tossed Harper out for no good reason.
ReplyDeleteNevermind. Terry Collins instead of Dusty. Interesting.
ReplyDeleteAlso, trainer Lee Kuntz goes with Davey.
ReplyDeleteWell, much as I enjoy a good pitchers' duel, gotta watch the first few minutes of my precious Nats before (sigh) work.
ReplyDeleteNL,
These 2 pitchers are special though. Aren't they?

ReplyDelete"Too bad for Little Clip, but he was just not ready."
He had 5 appearances (4.1 innings) with 7 Ks and 1 BB, and in 4 of those 5 appearances he allowed no earned runs. He had ONE bad outing in a game that was already a lost cause thanks to Haren. He's looked more 'ready' than Drew Storen has...
I figured it would be Baby Clip who got optioned. I agree Cedeno is next. I don't think Haren springs an injury between now and the. He's too straight forward a guy.
ReplyDeleteGYFNG!
I'd rather have Stras on Sunday FWIW.
GYFNG,
Wow...Det's ERA is 2.76 and Francis' is 6.30.
ReplyDeleteBoth have a record of 2 - 4.
Mr. Cy Francis presiding over the top of the first...
ReplyDeleteNot the best way to start the game, Det.
ReplyDeleteUhm... not good at bats at all fellas...
ReplyDeleteDaveBinMD--yeah, if you just looked at the stats. But looking at the games he was shaky and got rescued by some excellent fielding and the guy after him who didn't let inherited runners score. He was able to strike guys out, but didn't have much "craft". That will come, I hope.
ReplyDeleteCy Fracis needs to go
ReplyDeleteBabe Fowler came through on first pitch.
When Hirshbeck tossed Harper. Balking Bob was doing the plate.
ReplyDeleteCamera angle must be strange, how was that inside?
ReplyDeleteSo is CarGo out the game?
ReplyDeleteFreaky accident to CarGo
ReplyDeleteMrsB--yes. They subbed in Tyler Colvin.
ReplyDeleteAnd that's called a productive out. Take notice some of you Nats.
ReplyDeleteShakey start by Detwiler.
I hate to see anyone injured... That is tough...
ReplyDeleteThanks NL!
I thought CarGo hurt himself trying to get out of the way.
ReplyDeleteRoss looks rusty.
ReplyDeleteDid Detwiler warm up, they are not missing any pitches. Needed a K on Colvin andhe pitched right over the middle.
ReplyDeleteDet started the season lights out... then all of a sudden went into a lull...
ReplyDeleteCould've been worse. Hopefully Det settles in now.
ReplyDeleteOK, flip the script, Nats.
ReplyDeleteGood Det, minimized the damage, hasn't forgotten how to pitch. This game is not ending 1-0.
ReplyDeleteWe are going to win this game
ReplyDeleteUs - 8
Them - 3
"This game is not ending 1-0."
ReplyDeleteGetting in on the gutsy Internet prognostication game, I see... ;)
Jeff Francis hss been awful tis seasin. cy Francis is great.

Like you said he started off the season well. The Atlanta game was all about the fact that they had him scouted well and were prepared for him and Det sometimes has to mix it up. Also, there's a good chance Det was injured long before the game he was pulled from.
This is the thing about XM... So the inning just ended... But I am on MLB.com and pitch track just showed J Werth grounding out....
ReplyDeleteI dont understand why these pitchers with 5/6 ERAs eat us alive...
ReplyDeleteWe have not had a homer this series. About time we get one.
ReplyDelete>Also, there's a good chance Det was injured long before the game he was pulled from.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I seem to recall Carp and FP talking about him grimacing getting over to first during the previous start.
>I dont understand why these pitchers with 5/6 ERAs eat us alive...
ReplyDeleteIt's very strange and frustrating.
Mrs. b they kill us because we dont swing at first ball fast balls and the we are behibd too often
ReplyDeleteOK, nice. Now do your thing, rookie!
ReplyDeleteJust need Desi!
ReplyDeleteDesi is lights out hot...

It's why I suggested you rest Werth and LaRoche and get in the youngsters who have as good a chance on hitting his junk and the vets get a rest.
Francis is getting breaking balls over for a first strike, that's kind of different.
ReplyDeleteNiiiice...just a little bloop or seeing eye ball will do, z00k. Just even 'er up and go from there.
ReplyDelete15 and 8 game hit streaks
ReplyDeleteMan on 3rd with less than 2 outs
Anthony is lights out hot...
ReplyDeleteCome on Zook, perfect time to bring Desi home.. No dumb pop up...
meh
ReplyDeleteZuke is in a bad place at the plate. It would be so nice to get Ramos back, but now it's at least another month away. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteTHAT is why i hate first pitch swinging....
ReplyDeleteOops 2 outs. Forfot Werth batted this inning.
ReplyDeleteYou wanted a first pitch swing, you got one. From Suzuki, who never does that.
ReplyDeletebetter than watching detwiler hit tho
ReplyDelete2 batters in a row get hits and Suzuki swings at the 1st pitch he sees which was a pitchers pitch. Come on man!
ReplyDeleteIn his defense, Zook probably thought he wouldn't get another pitch to hit with Det batting behind him.
ReplyDeleteAll right, folks, venturing out into the weather. Take care of this one, go NATS!!!!

He is headed towards Mendoza and it's frustrating to watch. He started off the season looking clutch and now not so much.
DJ needs to give Zook more days off... Im not sure he has had a hit since he got hit by that pitch...

Which is why the 8 hitter has to be a patient hitter and you take what the game gives you. Detwiler then has to do his job. That's not Suzuki's job to swing at that pitch.
Now Detwiler begins the next inning. Sigh.
Having watched baseball this debate has been forever. To swing or not to swing.
ReplyDeleteIften times tge most hittable pitch is the first pitch. Teams that have a low average have it because they not hitting hittable pitches.
Nolan Areanto just got a hit on the first pitch.
there's a pivot for practice
ReplyDeleteI think that's Rendon's first turn 2B. He's had a few good feeds, but no turns. Good job!
ReplyDeleteNice turn by Rendon as Ian's flip was from in front of the bag, not behind.
ReplyDeleteNot easy.
See, this is why Zook needed to be patient, try to get a hit... Now Det leads off this inning...
ReplyDeleteDJ is going to have use JS more... Keep both guys motivated and healthy...
Nice clear by Rendon on that doubleplay! Textbook! Strong arm too!
ReplyDeleteSorry GoSM - I hadnt refreshed the page...
ReplyDeleteFP owes me a drink! "Cleared himself nice", I said nice clear. Hey FP! I will take a virtual Corona today!
ReplyDeleteMrsB, same thoughts always welcome ;)
ReplyDeleteWell, the reverse jinx is in force for Det. Nice.
ReplyDeletewait - Det got a hit!?!?!?! LOL... Good at bat sir... Saw like 8 pitches...
ReplyDeleteSuzuki hit hit fast ball that was doewn the middle. Most hittable pitch there is.
ReplyDeleteWhy would him not to hit the most hittable pitch there is?
Problem not the swing. It was the contact. He didnt square it, he hit the top of the ball.
Det's first hit of the year!
ReplyDeleteSee Detwiler got a hit. That's my point with Suzuki, do your job.

ReplyDelete">I dont understand why these pitchers with 5/6 ERAs eat us alive...

I'm about 99% sure it's not true. I bet if you could do splits, we hit the guys with high ERAs much more than the guys with low ERAs. We hit Scott Diamond well four games ago. Most of our other 6+ run outbursts also came against relatively bad starters.
Fans just remember it more when we can't hit mediocre guys because its that much more frustrating. You see a guy like Francis on the mound and you expect every Nat to get on base.
Also, this has been a horrible offense so far this season, so they really don't hit anyone all that well.
MNF, if that was down the middle, check it on pitch F/X. I thought it was down and in. Maybe you are right and if you are right, shame on Suzuki for not driving it.
ReplyDeleteOur hitters need to read Wee Willie Keelers's book.
ReplyDeleteMNF, if that was down the middle, check it on pitch F/X. I thought it was down and in. Maybe you are right and if you are right, shame on Suzuki for not driving it.
ReplyDeleteLook, we all know he's not a .300 hitter. And even .300 hitters don't always get a hit on fastballs down the middle. It happens.
ZIM! The streak continues.
ReplyDeleteI hope he didn't watch it too long. I guess this time it's ok.
ReplyDeleteThere's the dinger for the series. Way to go zim!
ReplyDeleteZIM! Keeping the streak alive, nice!
ReplyDeleteHOME RUN FINALLY FOR RYAN!!!! WHOOOT WHOOOOo!!!!
ReplyDeleteIt was breaking inside as I watched, but those are the hittable pitches
ReplyDeleteZim keeps homer streak going. That was not too far (a little higher) where Zook's pitch was.
Nice RZim, now the chorus of boos turn to cheers.
ReplyDeletePhillies announce John Lannan will start against the Nats.
ReplyDeleteI always liked Lannan.... But I hope we rock him in 4...

That ought to be interesting. Some of our boys struggle against off speed stuff . . .
The Wonkling just texted me a one word text. Let me quote it letter-for-letter:
ReplyDelete"YESSSSSS"
One lsst thought on last night.
ReplyDeleteDave Jagler announced and Ryan jogs into second.
Had he run not jogged he would have been headed for third.
Case is over to me now, Ryan figured a way to jog.
NWS has issued tornado warnings for the DC area.
ReplyDeleteReally nasty here now, heavy rain and wind.
Should be an out
ReplyDeleteMNF -- per GameDay (which seems to have been a lot more accurate this season than previously), the pitch to Zook was partway at the very bottom of the zone, very slightly lower than pitches with the bottom of the zone that Hoye (HP ump) has erroneously called balls today.
ReplyDeleteZim's dinger was much higher in the zone, at least 1/3 to 40% of the way up.
What is the injury?
ReplyDeleteBall bunted
ReplyDeleteBS, that's a strike not an HBP
ReplyDeleteIf you're in the strike zone that's too bad, it's a friggin strike.
ReplyDeleteHirshbeck we all know is a lier already
ReplyDeleteAight... see yall in an hour or so... going home to watch the game on tv and will rejoin you all then,...
ReplyDeleteHoping we score more while I am away...
See you in a few...
Pulled it bsck once ball was close
ReplyDeleteRyan found a way to avoid pulling a hamstring. I know everyone seems to want to do that, but he's avoid the trend for a change.
ReplyDeleteIn case there is any doubt. I HATE john Hirshbeck as an ump.
ReplyDeleteGosh -- I can't remember a discussion (re: RZ last night) that went on for so long which can be summarized by: "he misjudged, but he scored anyway"
ReplyDeleteHit the corners.
ReplyDeleteYeah, Hirshbeck's a well-established bum
ReplyDeleteBizarre call on Fowler. Front foot out of the box and body across the plate. The bat was being pulled back. I realize it's a judgment call but Nats need some calls to go their way.
ReplyDeleteMental errors can be teaching moments.
ReplyDeleteI'm watching on Gameday right now . . . missed the first inning:
ReplyDeleteWhat happened to CarGo?
Wonk -- and given the confusion around the near-catch, I don't know that all of us would agree that Zim misjudged. Most, sure, but not all.
ReplyDeleteWonk at 4:10, I agree. It had no adverse effect since he scored by Desi.
ReplyDeleteI'm just listening online, but if his foot is out of the box when he's hit - he's clearly out
ReplyDeletePoor judgement in my opinion.had he been in box not in front of the plate then a good call.

We just don't remember them so much. Just yesterday (or was it day before?) the throw beat the Nats runner (can't remember who), but the ump call him safe.
if you bunt in that position you're out anyway, can't see how be a batter in any way without being IN the box.
ReplyDeleteGood play by Rendon.

A foul ball that ricocheted off of him. He hurt his ankle. No video to show it. I thought possibly injured trying to dodge the ball as it was a low ankle injury.
wonk, it's still possible for the tag to be late or not made in that case. A guy can't have a foot out of the box and be a batter.
ReplyDeleteRendon with another nice fielding play!
ReplyDeleteI called out immediately, as he hit the ball . He was bringing back the ball it hit his hands on the bat. He was out of the batter's box so it seem clear he was out.
ReplyDeleteHad he been swinging not bunting it would never not be called a check swing.
i will grant you that call is missed, especially since they let guys rub the lines out pretty quickly
ReplyDeleteWonk, I'm a homer. I always think the Nats don't get the calls ;)
ReplyDeleteAlso: gameday says:
ReplyDeleteJeff Francis lines out to center fielder Denard Span.
Injury Delay.
What was the injury delay?

Spoken like a true fan!! ;-)
LaRoche has to start to take those outside pitches oppo again.
ReplyDeletethat's sad that no other ump saw it then if they conferenced.
ReplyDelete"What was the injury delay?"
ReplyDeleteThe Rockies batter fouled the ball off and it hit Carlos Gonzalez who was in the on-deck circle. He had to leave the game.
Calling Chipper Jones, ALR needs you again.
ReplyDeleteAgreed Ghost.
ReplyDeleteWe either hit him or totally stink.
ReplyDeleteALR swings at one a foot outside.
I loved that bunt a few games back agains the Mets
ReplyDeleteNobody has to tell Francis to lighten up, it's ALL lightweight
ReplyDeleteRendon due a tator.
ReplyDeleteOk, I like running against THIS guy if you can go first move.
ReplyDelete>I dont understand why these pitchers with 5/6 ERAs eat us alive...
ReplyDeleteAll a matter of perspective, my friend.
We think Ohlendorf pitched great last night.
I'm sure Rockies fans are saying: "WTF, the guys as has a combined ERA of 7.94 for 2011-2012 and we only get two hits off of him?!?!"
That was the worst swing Rendon has had since his callup. It happens. That looked like every swing lately from Chad Tracy.
ReplyDeleteRendon got under it, been driving through most
ReplyDeleteZook you are due
Ian's up to .288 -- highest BA on the entire team.
ReplyDeleteRendon due a tator.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a decepticon from Veggie Machines ... Ta-Tor!
> Zook you are due
ReplyDeleteIt's ok. We have that spray-hitter extraordinaire leading off next inning ;-)
This game ain't ending 2-1. We need more runs.

Rendon would disagree and somewhere Zach Duke is telling people he had the highest BA on the team.
Stay safe in the DC area -- weatherwise, I mean.
ReplyDeleteYah, that's right David Proctor Sheesh.
ReplyDeleteMASN has screwed up a couple times today.
ReplyDeleteDamn I. Go out for 5 minutes to feed the catsand I come back we are losing. i cant trust Ross while I am gone
ReplyDeleteRoss is just missing up a little. Probably rusty. He needs to be down to induce all those groundouts.
ReplyDeleteA DC Wonk said...

OK -- how about for those playing in more than 20 games?
It's DP's fault, MNF. He's The Summoner's Evil Twin today.
ReplyDeleteMade it to work, but some heavy rain. Student isn't here, so there was no rush... ;) Just in time to see Jayson make an error making it a real Nats game.
ReplyDeleteDavid you talking about playing the inning ending music after second out?
ReplyDeleteYeah MNF. They screwed up earlier too by playing the music. And they also tweeted the score was 4-3, when it's 3-2.
ReplyDeleteWell, it probably ain't ending 3-2 either. 'Bout time to figure this guy out.
ReplyDeleteAnother error - come on Werth. The amount of errors may be the most surprising part of the 2013 Nationals.
ReplyDeleteHas Werth hit one out of the infield this series?
ReplyDeleteThis guy pitches crap. I guessbeing an old man with eyes that are wearing out I could only hit crap now. Would never see the fastbalk.
ReplyDeleteFirst 2 batters so fatr weak
Zim, Werth, LaRoche up next inning. That's when we need to pounce.
ReplyDeleteThat is the Rockies way -- mostly lefties who get guys out based on changing speeds.
ReplyDeleteHad a hit to right last night scored zim.
ReplyDeleteIrst 2 batters have been worse than poor today, very Espi like.
Reminder to Nats: this guy has a 6+ era. Destroy him.
ReplyDeleteThe only issue I have with Det is that even on the rare occasion he throws offspeed, he doesn't throw it for strikes. He needs to get that curve and change over for a strike. Not all the time, but at least make them respect it. If he can do that, he'll be fantastic.
ReplyDeleteFrancis has made Kobernus look AA.
ReplyDeleteSorry no hit last night.
ReplyDeleteOne hit to outfield. double in the 5th Tuesday
Much better inning that time.
ReplyDeleteRyan Zimmerman fan challenge? Hmm... I would like to challenge Ryan to a competition of throwing a baseball from third to first.
ReplyDeleteTime to get seious, Francis is due to give up some runs.
ReplyDeleteI've got a fan challenge for Ryan: Nats Insider Trivia! Pick an event in Nats history at random--he has to guess who predicted it.
ReplyDeleteWell at least Francis will be out of the game soon.
ReplyDeleteHope that was it for Francis and get into their bullpen.
ReplyDeleteA change up right over the middle moving to the sweet spot and we stand and do nothing.
ReplyDeleteIs that Davey told Dave Jagler? No mote passive hitting?
top 5 1 for 15. Except the homer they have been Werthless.
Yet another day a guy with a high era feasts on us.
ReplyDeleteTell me again Davey just how good Eck is.
Great bats in middle of the order. 8k against Francis. Thats just awful. Wake up guys.
ReplyDeleteWe are 14th in runs and hits. Batters are not making any indication that they are oing what it takes to change that ranking.
ReplyDeleteYou know I wish Eck throw his clipboard away. We are in high tech now, and talk the batters during the game. at least look like you are engaged.
ReplyDeleteWerth's first error, though.
ReplyDeleteNine outs.
ReplyDeleteWhy does Desi insist on trying to bunt? I know he has a few bunt base hits, but his power is too valuable. I like the bunt if it's Span or Kobernus but not Desi.
ReplyDeleteHe wasnt planning to bunt. Wants to draw 3b man in that is all.
ReplyDeleteHad he plan to bunt he would have.
This is a huge AB for Suzuki. Get on it!
ReplyDeleteZook needs to start hitting again
ReplyDeleteNow Lombo needs to hit. Has been weak recently too.
ReplyDelete
