Game 65: Nats at Rockies

USA Today Sports Images
It's been 29 days since Ross Detwiler last pitched, a strained right oblique muscle having shelved him for nearly a month. Today, the left-hander returns to the mound, healthy and hoping to pick up where he left off. In eight starts before the injury, Detwiler sported a 2.76 ERA, certainly pitching better than his 2-4 record would suggest.

The Nationals have missed their No. 5 starter and gladly welcome him back with open arms this afternoon as they seek to win their second straight against the Rockies and take this series. With Detwiler officially activated off the DL, reliever Erik Davis has been optioned to Class AAA Syracuse. That means Ross Ohlendorf is sticking around for now, though the Nats will need to make another roster move on Sunday when Stephen Strasburg returns.

After watching his club score five runs last night against Jorge De La Rosa and Co., Davey Johnson is going with a similar lineup against fellow lefty Jeff Francis. That means Jeff Kobernus makes his second straight start in left field, batting second. The only change: Kurt Suzuki returns behind the plate, batting eighth.

Though I'm not in Denver for this series, I will be watching alongside all of you this afternoon. And I'll have an Instant Analysis post as soon as the game ends, so be sure to check back for that...

  1. Too bad for Little Clip, but he was just not ready. Interesting that they are keeping Ohlendorf. He can't pitch for a few days, but if they sent him down he would have to stay there for 10 days, or he could take his opt-out.

    ReplyDelete
  2. Welcome back Det.... Im glad to see Kobernus getting more plate appearances...

I would have rathered Mini Clip stay up and Cedeno go back down...

While last season's answer appeared to have been a chicken ("sacrifice a live . . ." or "a whole (KFC) chicken just like you ordered" or "soup" or "mode" or whatever), this season it appears to be gunpowder ("Have to wake up bats!").

Mule senses a bat-awakening in progress. Offerings of cigars and rum are also indicated.
Thanks be given to the baseball gods (or Jobu, or whomever); may the excitement continue to build !

  4. Cards scored a run against Harvey with small-ball. Wonder if that will be enough for Wainwright.

    ReplyDelete
  5. I'm wondering if Haren doesn't get an injured pinky finger on his right hand between now and Sunday. Not wishing it on him of course but just saying.......

    ReplyDelete
  6. From the Twitter feed:
Per Davey, Stephen Strasburg (lat) had a clean bullpen session today and was given the clear by trainers. Still on track to return Sunday.

Woohoo! Next up: info on Harper, hopefully tomorrow, and hopefully appreciably along the same lines!

  7. I forgot the game started at 3 today.... I guess I will be listening to Charlie and Dave on XM until I can get home and watch the game...

    ReplyDelete
  8. I had no idea Jeff Francis was having such a bad year. Walks and HRs are way up. The Nats need to show patience, get on base, and play for the Earl Weaver special today. They could put up a big number.

    ReplyDelete
  9. The Post schedule page shows Haren on Sunday and Stras on Monday ... does Davey want to save SS for the Phils or is Monday still correct/

    ReplyDelete
  10. >I had no idea Jeff Francis was having such a bad year.

Oh great...these guys have had our freaking number this season.

    ReplyDelete

  11. DaveB,

Everywhere I checked they have Stas on Sunday in Cleveland and Haren in Phily on Monday.

    ReplyDelete

  12. Wainwright is a free agent after this year. Right?

    Wow.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Wright broke up the no-hitter after a chancy (not nessarily wrong) call by the ump. They didn't show reply if he checked his swing and they didn't show pitch f/x to see if it was a strike.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Mrs B ... MLB on XM usually broadcasts the home team announcers. Does JFK have an XM station?

    ReplyDelete
  15. And now Wainwright walks a guy. Was he mentally in the dugout when he thought he had the 3rd strike on Wright? Luckily, a long flyout to center by Duda (had a nice sound, you could see Wainwright was worried).

  16. Wainright signed a 5 year extension in March for $97.5 million.

    ReplyDelete

  17. Never mind. Wainright signed a big long term contract in March. ($97.5 mil for 5 years).

  18. I owe you a drink phil.

  19. Sorry to see Clip II go back down.

He'll be back. Cursed with not throwing with his left arm like Cedeno, I guess???

    ReplyDelete

  20. Doc,

Cedeno is only buying 3 more days until Stras returns I think.

    ReplyDelete
  21. BTW, from the other threads, but Re: Davey coaching in the ASG--am I remembering wrong, or is it not established convention to have the managers of the other division winners on the staff, if they accept?

    ReplyDelete

  22. Sec.3

I think it's fairly discretionary but it's generally considered good manners to have the home manager invited to the staff.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Balkin Bob Davidson and John Hirschbeck on the bases. Somehow I missed that the first two games....just hope nobody on the Nats gives Hirschbeck the opportunity to repeat his Pittsburgh performance when he tossed Harper out for no good reason.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Nevermind. Terry Collins instead of Dusty. Interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Also, trainer Lee Kuntz goes with Davey.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Well, much as I enjoy a good pitchers' duel, gotta watch the first few minutes of my precious Nats before (sigh) work.

    ReplyDelete

  27. NL,

These 2 pitchers are special though. Aren't they?

He had 5 appearances (4.1 innings) with 7 Ks and 1 BB, and in 4 of those 5 appearances he allowed no earned runs. He had ONE bad outing in a game that was already a lost cause thanks to Haren. He's looked more 'ready' than Drew Storen has...

    ReplyDelete
  29. I figured it would be Baby Clip who got optioned. I agree Cedeno is next. I don't think Haren springs an injury between now and the. He's too straight forward a guy.
    GYFNG!
I'd rather have Stras on Sunday FWIW.
    GYFNG,

  30. Wow...Det's ERA is 2.76 and Francis' is 6.30.

    Both have a record of 2 - 4.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Mr. Cy Francis presiding over the top of the first...

    ReplyDelete
  32. Not the best way to start the game, Det.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Uhm... not good at bats at all fellas...

    ReplyDelete
  34. DaveBinMD--yeah, if you just looked at the stats. But looking at the games he was shaky and got rescued by some excellent fielding and the guy after him who didn't let inherited runners score. He was able to strike guys out, but didn't have much "craft". That will come, I hope.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Cy Fracis needs to go

Babe Fowler came through on first pitch.

    ReplyDelete
  36. When Hirshbeck tossed Harper. Balking Bob was doing the plate.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Camera angle must be strange, how was that inside?

    ReplyDelete
  38. MrsB--yes. They subbed in Tyler Colvin.

    ReplyDelete
  39. And that's called a productive out. Take notice some of you Nats.

    Shakey start by Detwiler.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I hate to see anyone injured... That is tough...

    Thanks NL!

    ReplyDelete
  41. I thought CarGo hurt himself trying to get out of the way.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Did Detwiler warm up, they are not missing any pitches. Needed a K on Colvin andhe pitched right over the middle.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Det started the season lights out... then all of a sudden went into a lull...

    ReplyDelete
  44. Could've been worse. Hopefully Det settles in now.

    ReplyDelete
  45. OK, flip the script, Nats.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Good Det, minimized the damage, hasn't forgotten how to pitch. This game is not ending 1-0.

    ReplyDelete
  47. We are going to win this game

    Us - 8
    Them - 3

    ReplyDelete
  48. "This game is not ending 1-0."

Getting in on the gutsy Internet prognostication game, I see... ;)

    ReplyDelete
  49. Jeff Francis hss been awful tis seasin. cy Francis is great.

Like you said he started off the season well. The Atlanta game was all about the fact that they had him scouted well and were prepared for him and Det sometimes has to mix it up. Also, there's a good chance Det was injured long before the game he was pulled from.

    ReplyDelete
  51. This is the thing about XM... So the inning just ended... But I am on MLB.com and pitch track just showed J Werth grounding out....

    ReplyDelete
  52. I dont understand why these pitchers with 5/6 ERAs eat us alive...

    ReplyDelete
  53. We have not had a homer this series. About time we get one.

    ReplyDelete
  54. >Also, there's a good chance Det was injured long before the game he was pulled from.

Yeah, I seem to recall Carp and FP talking about him grimacing getting over to first during the previous start.

    ReplyDelete
  55. >I dont understand why these pitchers with 5/6 ERAs eat us alive...

    It's very strange and frustrating.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Mrs. b they kill us because we dont swing at first ball fast balls and the we are behibd too often

It's why I suggested you rest Werth and LaRoche and get in the youngsters who have as good a chance on hitting his junk and the vets get a rest.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Francis is getting breaking balls over for a first strike, that's kind of different.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Niiiice...just a little bloop or seeing eye ball will do, z00k. Just even 'er up and go from there.

    ReplyDelete
  61. 15 and 8 game hit streaks

Man on 3rd with less than 2 outs

    ReplyDelete
  62. Anthony is lights out hot...

Come on Zook, perfect time to bring Desi home.. No dumb pop up...

    ReplyDelete
  63. Zuke is in a bad place at the plate. It would be so nice to get Ramos back, but now it's at least another month away. Sigh.

    ReplyDelete
  64. THAT is why i hate first pitch swinging....

    ReplyDelete
  65. Oops 2 outs. Forfot Werth batted this inning.

    ReplyDelete
  66. You wanted a first pitch swing, you got one. From Suzuki, who never does that.

    ReplyDelete
  67. better than watching detwiler hit tho

    ReplyDelete
  68. 2 batters in a row get hits and Suzuki swings at the 1st pitch he sees which was a pitchers pitch. Come on man!

    ReplyDelete
  69. In his defense, Zook probably thought he wouldn't get another pitch to hit with Det batting behind him.

    ReplyDelete
  70. All right, folks, venturing out into the weather. Take care of this one, go NATS!!!!

He is headed towards Mendoza and it's frustrating to watch. He started off the season looking clutch and now not so much.

    ReplyDelete
  72. DJ needs to give Zook more days off... Im not sure he has had a hit since he got hit by that pitch...

Which is why the 8 hitter has to be a patient hitter and you take what the game gives you. Detwiler then has to do his job. That's not Suzuki's job to swing at that pitch.

Now Detwiler begins the next inning. Sigh.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Having watched baseball this debate has been forever. To swing or not to swing.

Iften times tge most hittable pitch is the first pitch. Teams that have a low average have it because they not hitting hittable pitches.

Nolan Areanto just got a hit on the first pitch.

    ReplyDelete
  75. there's a pivot for practice

    ReplyDelete
  76. I think that's Rendon's first turn 2B. He's had a few good feeds, but no turns. Good job!

    ReplyDelete
  77. Nice turn by Rendon as Ian's flip was from in front of the bag, not behind.

    Not easy.

    ReplyDelete
  78. See, this is why Zook needed to be patient, try to get a hit... Now Det leads off this inning...

DJ is going to have use JS more... Keep both guys motivated and healthy...

    ReplyDelete
  79. Nice clear by Rendon on that doubleplay! Textbook! Strong arm too!

    ReplyDelete
  80. Sorry GoSM - I hadnt refreshed the page...

    ReplyDelete
  81. FP owes me a drink! "Cleared himself nice", I said nice clear. Hey FP! I will take a virtual Corona today!

    ReplyDelete
  82. MrsB, same thoughts always welcome ;)

    ReplyDelete
  83. Well, the reverse jinx is in force for Det. Nice.

    ReplyDelete
  84. wait - Det got a hit!?!?!?! LOL... Good at bat sir... Saw like 8 pitches...

    ReplyDelete
  85. Suzuki hit hit fast ball that was doewn the middle. Most hittable pitch there is.

Why would him not to hit the most hittable pitch there is?

Problem not the swing. It was the contact. He didnt square it, he hit the top of the ball.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Det's first hit of the year!

    ReplyDelete
  87. See Detwiler got a hit. That's my point with Suzuki, do your job.

  88. Eric said...

">I dont understand why these pitchers with 5/6 ERAs eat us alive...

I'm about 99% sure it's not true. I bet if you could do splits, we hit the guys with high ERAs much more than the guys with low ERAs. We hit Scott Diamond well four games ago. Most of our other 6+ run outbursts also came against relatively bad starters.

Fans just remember it more when we can't hit mediocre guys because its that much more frustrating. You see a guy like Francis on the mound and you expect every Nat to get on base.

Also, this has been a horrible offense so far this season, so they really don't hit anyone all that well.

    ReplyDelete
  89. MNF, if that was down the middle, check it on pitch F/X. I thought it was down and in. Maybe you are right and if you are right, shame on Suzuki for not driving it.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Our hitters need to read Wee Willie Keelers's book.

    ReplyDelete
  91. MNF, if that was down the middle, check it on pitch F/X. I thought it was down and in. Maybe you are right and if you are right, shame on Suzuki for not driving it.

Look, we all know he's not a .300 hitter. And even .300 hitters don't always get a hit on fastballs down the middle. It happens.

    ReplyDelete
  92. I hope he didn't watch it too long. I guess this time it's ok.

    ReplyDelete
  93. There's the dinger for the series. Way to go zim!

    ReplyDelete
  94. ZIM! Keeping the streak alive, nice!

    ReplyDelete
  95. HOME RUN FINALLY FOR RYAN!!!! WHOOOT WHOOOOo!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  96. It was breaking inside as I watched, but those are the hittable pitches
Zim keeps homer streak going. That was not too far (a little higher) where Zook's pitch was.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Nice RZim, now the chorus of boos turn to cheers.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Phillies announce John Lannan will start against the Nats.

    ReplyDelete
  99. I always liked Lannan.... But I hope we rock him in 4...

  101. The Wonkling just texted me a one word text. Let me quote it letter-for-letter:

    "YESSSSSS"

    ReplyDelete
  102. One lsst thought on last night.

Dave Jagler announced and Ryan jogs into second.

Had he run not jogged he would have been headed for third.

Case is over to me now, Ryan figured a way to jog.

    ReplyDelete
  103. NWS has issued tornado warnings for the DC area.

Really nasty here now, heavy rain and wind.

    ReplyDelete
  104. MNF -- per GameDay (which seems to have been a lot more accurate this season than previously), the pitch to Zook was partway at the very bottom of the zone, very slightly lower than pitches with the bottom of the zone that Hoye (HP ump) has erroneously called balls today.

Zim's dinger was much higher in the zone, at least 1/3 to 40% of the way up.

    ReplyDelete
  105. BS, that's a strike not an HBP

    ReplyDelete
  106. If you're in the strike zone that's too bad, it's a friggin strike.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Hirshbeck we all know is a lier already

    ReplyDelete
  108. Aight... see yall in an hour or so... going home to watch the game on tv and will rejoin you all then,...

Hoping we score more while I am away...

    See you in a few...

    ReplyDelete
  109. Pulled it bsck once ball was close

    ReplyDelete
  110. Ryan found a way to avoid pulling a hamstring. I know everyone seems to want to do that, but he's avoid the trend for a change.

    ReplyDelete
  111. In case there is any doubt. I HATE john Hirshbeck as an ump.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Gosh -- I can't remember a discussion (re: RZ last night) that went on for so long which can be summarized by: "he misjudged, but he scored anyway"

    ReplyDelete
  113. Yeah, Hirshbeck's a well-established bum

    ReplyDelete
  114. Bizarre call on Fowler. Front foot out of the box and body across the plate. The bat was being pulled back. I realize it's a judgment call but Nats need some calls to go their way.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Mental errors can be teaching moments.

    ReplyDelete
  116. I'm watching on Gameday right now . . . missed the first inning:

    What happened to CarGo?

    ReplyDelete
  117. Wonk -- and given the confusion around the near-catch, I don't know that all of us would agree that Zim misjudged. Most, sure, but not all.

    ReplyDelete
  118. Wonk at 4:10, I agree. It had no adverse effect since he scored by Desi.

    ReplyDelete
  119. I'm just listening online, but if his foot is out of the box when he's hit - he's clearly out

    ReplyDelete
  120. Poor judgement in my opinion.had he been in box not in front of the plate then a good call.

    ReplyDelete

We just don't remember them so much. Just yesterday (or was it day before?) the throw beat the Nats runner (can't remember who), but the ump call him safe.

    ReplyDelete
  122. if you bunt in that position you're out anyway, can't see how be a batter in any way without being IN the box.

A foul ball that ricocheted off of him. He hurt his ankle. No video to show it. I thought possibly injured trying to dodge the ball as it was a low ankle injury.

    ReplyDelete
  124. wonk, it's still possible for the tag to be late or not made in that case. A guy can't have a foot out of the box and be a batter.

    ReplyDelete
  125. Rendon with another nice fielding play!

    ReplyDelete
  126. I called out immediately, as he hit the ball . He was bringing back the ball it hit his hands on the bat. He was out of the batter's box so it seem clear he was out.

Had he been swinging not bunting it would never not be called a check swing.

    ReplyDelete
  127. i will grant you that call is missed, especially since they let guys rub the lines out pretty quickly

    ReplyDelete
  128. Wonk, I'm a homer. I always think the Nats don't get the calls ;)

    ReplyDelete
  129. Also: gameday says:

    Injury Delay.

    ReplyDelete
  132. that's sad that no other ump saw it then if they conferenced.

    ReplyDelete
  133. "What was the injury delay?"

The Rockies batter fouled the ball off and it hit Carlos Gonzalez who was in the on-deck circle. He had to leave the game.

    ReplyDelete

  138. Ok, I like running against THIS guy if you can go first move.

    ReplyDelete
  139. >I dont understand why these pitchers with 5/6 ERAs eat us alive...

All a matter of perspective, my friend.

We think Ohlendorf pitched great last night.

I'm sure Rockies fans are saying: "WTF, the guys as has a combined ERA of 7.94 for 2011-2012 and we only get two hits off of him?!?!"

    ReplyDelete
  140. That was the worst swing Rendon has had since his callup. It happens. That looked like every swing lately from Chad Tracy.

OK -- how about for those playing in more than 20 games?

    ReplyDelete
  153. It's DP's fault, MNF. He's The Summoner's Evil Twin today.

    ReplyDelete
  154. Made it to work, but some heavy rain. Student isn't here, so there was no rush... ;) Just in time to see Jayson make an error making it a real Nats game.

    ReplyDelete
  155. David you talking about playing the inning ending music after second out?

    ReplyDelete
  156. Yeah MNF. They screwed up earlier too by playing the music. And they also tweeted the score was 4-3, when it's 3-2.

    ReplyDelete
  157. Well, it probably ain't ending 3-2 either. 'Bout time to figure this guy out.

    ReplyDelete
  158. Another error - come on Werth. The amount of errors may be the most surprising part of the 2013 Nationals.

    ReplyDelete
  159. Has Werth hit one out of the infield this series?

    ReplyDelete
  160. This guy pitches crap. I guessbeing an old man with eyes that are wearing out I could only hit crap now. Would never see the fastbalk.

First 2 batters so fatr weak

    ReplyDelete
  161. Zim, Werth, LaRoche up next inning. That's when we need to pounce.

    ReplyDelete
  162. That is the Rockies way -- mostly lefties who get guys out based on changing speeds.

    ReplyDelete

  164. Reminder to Nats: this guy has a 6+ era. Destroy him.

  165. The only issue I have with Det is that even on the rare occasion he throws offspeed, he doesn't throw it for strikes. He needs to get that curve and change over for a strike. Not all the time, but at least make them respect it. If he can do that, he'll be fantastic.

  168. Ryan Zimmerman fan challenge? Hmm... I would like to challenge Ryan to a competition of throwing a baseball from third to first.

  170. I've got a fan challenge for Ryan: Nats Insider Trivia! Pick an event in Nats history at random--he has to guess who predicted it.

  171. Well at least Francis will be out of the game soon.

  172. Hope that was it for Francis and get into their bullpen.

  173. A change up right over the middle moving to the sweet spot and we stand and do nothing.

  175. Great bats in middle of the order. 8k against Francis. Thats just awful. Wake up guys.

  176. We are 14th in runs and hits. Batters are not making any indication that they are oing what it takes to change that ranking.

    ReplyDelete
  177. You know I wish Eck throw his clipboard away. We are in high tech now, and talk the batters during the game. at least look like you are engaged.

  178. Why does Desi insist on trying to bunt? I know he has a few bunt base hits, but his power is too valuable. I like the bunt if it's Span or Kobernus but not Desi.

    ReplyDelete
  179. He wasnt planning to bunt. Wants to draw 3b man in that is all.

Had he plan to bunt he would have.
