Start times, umps announced

Associated Press photo
Marvin Hudson and Davey Johnson will be reunited during the NLDS.
The first two postseason games by a Washington baseball team in 79 years will have late-afternoon starting times, and don't be surprised if that trend continues next week once the National League Division Series returns to the District.

Major League Baseball today announced starting times for all postseason games through Tuesday, revealing that Game 1 of the NLDS between the Nationals and the winner of today's NL Wild Card Game between the Braves and Cardinals will begin at 3:07 p.m. EDT Sunday. Game 2 will be played at 4:37 p.m. EDT Monday.

Start times for Games 3-5 -- scheduled to be played Wednesday through Friday at Nationals Park -- have not been announced yet. But it's likely that Game 3 will feature another afternoon start, and it's possible the same could be true for potential Games 4 and 5.

Why all the day baseball? Because the Nationals, as the No. 1 seed in the NL, have the same Division Series schedule as the Yankees, the AL's top seed. And MLB and TBS (which is broadcasting all but two Division Series games over the next week) prefer to showcase the star-studded, 27-time World Series champs from New York in primetime whenever possible.

Thus, the Yankees will open their ALDS on the road Sunday night against the winner of tonight's Wild Card Game between the Orioles and Rangers at 6:15 p.m. EDT and will play Game 2 on Monday at 8:07 p.m., with the Nationals serving as the lead-in both days.

Sunday's Game 1 also will partially run up against the Redskins' 1 p.m. home game against the Falcons.

Start times for the final three games of the NLDS, all scheduled to be played in Washington, likely won't be announced until the last possible minute because they could be affected by the status of other Division Series that could be wrapped up by then. The NLDS between the Giants and Reds and the ALDS between the Tigers and Athletics could be over as early as Tuesday if one team sweeps the three-game series.

But if either of those series extends to four games, it would affect the starting time for Wednesday's Game 3 between the Nationals and Braves or Cardinals.

If the games at Nationals Park end up being played in the afternoon, outfielders from both teams will have to contend with the potentially difficult sun that resulted in three dropped flyballs over the course of two days Sept. 23-24.

Meanwhile, a familiar (and not-so-popular) face will be umpiring the Nationals' Division Series: Marvin Hudson. Hudson, who blew a call at first base during a Sept. 15 loss to the Braves that led to manager Davey Johnson's lone ejection of the season, was named by MLB as one of the six umpires on the crew for this series.

The full list of umpires: Joe West (crew chief), Paul Emmel, Ed Hickox, Hudson, Jim Joyce and Alfonso Marquez.

Per MLB rules, umpires are not allowed to work consecutive postseason rounds. Thus, anyone umpiring in the Division Series cannot work in the League Championship Series, though they are eligible to return for the World Series.

  2. May the Sun Monster come out in the bottom half of the innings... also, Hudson owes us.

  3. This means Game 1will be starting during the third quarter of the Redskins-Falcons game. Better than a 1PM start I suppose...

  4. I don't like the schedule at all. If you work until 5 and have an hour commute you're going to miss half the game. BS

  5. Country Joe and Marvin "I don't have to see it or hear it, to call it" Hudson---a duo from umpire Hell!!!

Hopefully, they catch each other's flu and have to be replaced!

May there seats slide out the airplane door on the way to Washington!

  6. I don't think the Nats will have much problem disposing of either the Reds or the Giants. So we need to get past the Cards/Atl to get to the WS. Just my opinion.

Which means that if the Orioles win tonight, their first two ALDS games will be airing immediately after the Nationals game. Under MASN's plan for extended postseason coverage, the Nationals postgame show will be at the same time as the Orioles pregame show. How will they handle this, with MASN2 or the execrable "one happy MASN family" combined broadcast booth? If it's the latter...hello Charlie and Dave! (Although that's what it will probably be anyway.)

  9. Joe West might be more than a bit prickly and overly intrusive, but he in terms of getting calls right or wrong, he's very good. This is a pretty strong umpiring crew.

    ReplyDelete
  10. What? Laz Diaz, C.B. Bucknor, Balkin Bob Davidson and Angel Hernandez weren't available?

    ReplyDelete
  11. I am still fond of Joe West's 4th chin. Handsome man is he!

    ReplyDelete
  12. Joe West AND Marvin Hudson? How on earth do they let West, especially, umpire a play off game? I thought this was not a seniority-based decision. After what Hudson has done to us, how can MLB send him our way?

  13. (Repeating a comment that got new-posted):

But though 2012 seems like a foundation for even better seasons, I wouldn't count on it.

Perhaps not, but the chances are much better for the Nats than other teams.

    Why?

For starters: consider how the Nats did it this year -- with over 350 games lost to injured starters.

Consider, too, the youth of the team -- most players have their most productive years from age 27-32. Neither Desi nor Danny are 27. (And, of course, Harper's still only 19!). Ramos is only 24, bit upside, and we should have him the entire season next year.

On the pitching side: Det seems like he's just now coming into his own; Stras will be available the entire season -- so will Storen. And, to boot: Det, Stras, JZ, Gio, and Storen are all under 27, too.

And most of the guys above are under team control for years.

As Boz (I think) pointed out: not a single player on the team had a career year (except for near rookies who fulfilled expected potential -- although I suppose Desi might have). LaRoche perhaps tied his best year, but: we've seen Morse, RZ, and others hit (over the entire season) better.

Nothing's guaranteed . . . but if you had to bet on _any_ team having a whole bunch of, say, 92+ win seasons starting this year -- you'd start with the Nats.

  14. Go O's. Orioles fans deserve at least one home playoff game in the 20th year of Camden Yards. The Orioles, their fans and their ballpark were there before Angelos, and they'll still be there long after he's gone.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I'm as worried about Hudson behind the plate as in the field. In he last game he umpired here against Milwaukee, he was horrible. He had both JZimm and Peralta wondering what was a strike in that game.

    ReplyDelete
  16. If the Braves lose today, the handling of Medlen will be the reason why vs the Nats handling of Strasburg.

Think about what would have happened if Medlen was the Braves #5 starter on Day #1. Theoretically they could have been the team with 99 wins instead of their postseason dependent on "lose and die" scenario and even if they win today, Medlen may not pitch again if the Braves get swept in 3 in the NLDS although he will most likely pitch Wednesday if they move on.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Joe West voted worst umpire in baseball.

    ----

The same poll had him as the fifth best. Not saying he isn't a jerk, but he's a good technical umpire. Also, he might be down to only 2 or 3 chins. He's lost so much weight he's not conspicuous by his waddling motion.

    ReplyDelete
  18. All home games in the afternoon games plus Marvin Hudson on the crew (not to mention Joe West). A very dispiriting post.

Actually, West was a very decent HP umpire the last time we saw him. Maybe they'll put Hudson on the LF line or something.

    ReplyDelete
  19. What bothers me about West in the playoffs is that he tries to make the show about him, rather then the players. As to Hudson, he really does need to see an optometrist.I have found him to be just plain bad. Surprised that he got this assignment.

    ReplyDelete
  20. OK, why would MLB want a controversy, can't Hudson umpire the other series, I mean for real!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Ghost, I totally agree on Medlen/Strasburg. I posted this awhile back, and I'm linking to it know not to say "me first" but because I didn't want to do the research again.

The idea that the Braves were smarter than the Nats in handling their post-TJ surgery ace because theirs is able to start the WC game is beyond silly.

Also, everyone touts the streak he has of the Braves winning games he started without mentioning that it covers three seasons. Only 12 of those winning games were this year.

If they move on, they'll only have him for one game (Game 3) in the NLDS, while we'll have Gio for two, if necessary.

    ReplyDelete
  22. The post season is about the Nats and their opponent, not about Hudson and West. This is very disappointing

    ReplyDelete
  23. The big winner is Living Social, they get the pub with little or know late games...

    ReplyDelete
  24. Aside from the Sun Monster aspect (and hey, it could always be a cloudy day) the late afternoon start time for weekday games is actually the best. It avoids both the morning and afternoon rush hours for traffic, and there will be no need for the late night Metro service. Thus there will be no excuse for the stands not being packed from the first pitch clear through the last out. Also, if it turns cold and silences the power bats, it will be much worse after dark. And according to Davey, the sun problem is worst earlier in the afternoon.

  26. The more I learn about the Red Sox situation, the more that team turns me off. I can not believe that the team turned on Valentine back in April because of his old school approach. I mean are you joking??? These players let themselves and their fans down in 2011 and one would expect that the very least they would be embarrassed to question a proven coach about changing the way they approach the game. just stunning

  29. I have a strange prediction for both games, watch the O's and Rangers score be something like 2-1 and Braves-Cards 7-6.

Buck is really gambling on this pitcher and I assume he is going with him because he has post season experience.

The Braves-Cards game could be a classic pitching duel, but this is when the crazy things happen, will Medlen continue to be a cool cat or will the one game and out get to him?

As I recall they all ARRIVED AT THE SAME TIME dude. I remember seeing my tax money burned by the governor of Baltimore William Donald Schafer for his good buddy Peter Angelos, mob lawyer, and his ownership group which included famous best selling author Tom Clancy (Reagan's favorite novelist).

Memorial stadium was the home to the other Orioles (the ones that actually won) plus ownership groups. The INNUH HAABAH was all Schaefer and his cronies. Don't get me started on that!

While I was suffering without a team I ended up paying so the damned Arbutians could have one?

Sorry I am not happy about that at all. Keep your bubbly good Oriole spirits to yourself please.

  32. mick,

The problem with Valentine is not that he's old school but that his ego is larger than Fenway Park and he did manage to coach the Red Sox to historically awful results.

    ReplyDelete
  33. peric... I hear you, I don't blame your anger but Angelos is not even worth getting your blood pressure up over...

    ReplyDelete
  34. JD... agreed on the ego of Valentine, my point was the team left him before the season began and the way 2011 ended, one would think the players would be respectful and receptive to changing

    ReplyDelete
  35. And don't bring up Edward Bennett Williams (nee' of Redskins ownership fame) as first. Angelos was already there working behind the scenes to grab up the O's. Can't have a DC owner owning the Ori'hoes. Right? Damned Governor of Baltimore ... Reach the Beach and the Mountains ... Governor of Baltimore and Ocean City plus Garret County and Deep Creek Lake ... Grrrrrrrrrrr ....

    ReplyDelete
  36. Peric so one can assume you were no fan of Willy Don, lol

    ReplyDelete
  37. Well, yeah, I was thinking that myself, actually--that Angelos and OPCY started the same year. But the fans had their park, even if it was a different one. And they did used to be the Browns, and then there's the whole Colts thing, so maybe they won't be there after he's gone. So the owner's a jerk. That certainly isn't unique.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Anyhow, don't you live in California? What's it to ya?

    ReplyDelete
  39. So the owner's a jerk. That certainly isn't unique.

Unlike the great Edward Bennett Williams who was in fact a famous and extremely competent top trial lawyer ... a mob/mafioso Greek insider in cahoots with the Governor of Baltimore and his cheeky mistress ... tacky, lacking any class unlike a Williams. LOW CLASS ARBUTIAN SCUM!

  40. mick,

I agree but that's a very quirky group there and they had Francona there for such a long time that it was hard to change the culture. The Red Sox addressed that a bit by getting rid of Becket but they still have to deal with players like Pedroia and Lester who feel that that the inmates should run the asylum.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I guess you answered my question on Willy Don, no mincing of words with you, lol

  49. mick,

I followed Valentine when he managed the Mets. He is a good baseball man but he gets on everyone's nerves very quickly. I don't see him getting a good managerial job anytime soon.

The Sox would be better off hiring someone more low key ( I hear they are after Farrell but I don't think the Jays will let him walk without compensation).

  52. I got bored and slipped into poke mode. Won't happen again. OK, maybe it will, but not today.

Ha! You need to learn that DC baseball fans, original baseball fans (albeit few and far between now) are just as feisty and ornery as any Ori'hoe, Spankee, Metsy, or Giant fan. We had to put up with a lot of losing and abuse.

The Noveau, "metrosexual", transient fan will not be like us ... we are hard core, die hard fans who live and die with our team. Yes, Boz is numbered among us ... that was clear when he mused about finding some his old high school buddies to mix it up in the stand with the Philthy fans. I understood exactly where he was coming from.

You forgot about Ed Williams. Also, you forgot about the roads, the infrastructure surrounding and the INNUH HABBAH and idea borrowed from the city of Victoria in Canada. Where did that money come from? And as for lottery proceeds spent on a stadium? Instead of education or something just as worthwhile? It still comes out of folks pockets no matter how you look at it.

  66. Peric, what does EBW have to do with Camden Yards? He died in 1988, well before the park opened. With respect to the lottery, that is something that people choose to participate in, not something, like general taxes, that are mandated. If they didn't buy a ticket, they weren't paying for the park. As far as improvements, that area was so blighted anyways that infrastructure improvements were probably necessary anyways.

  67. Seriously don't understand California. Nothing against it, just don't grasp it.

Big state two opposing poles that intermingle: Evangelical, ultra conservative types who make the Puritans look like liberals at times. Mostly to the east. Mostly the north and long the coast? The ultra liberal, earth tribe, Californial fusion religious types who mix Hinduism,(they call it Yoga but its Hinduism (I hate stealing ideas that are 5000 years old and calling them new and mine?) Buddhism mixed with Native American Shamanism and a lot of the Transgenerational trauma and grief they carry.

Clearly the two poles don't understand each other at all. One can't abide the other. Yet without each pole, the negative and the positive (each with an opinion as to which is negative and which positive ~smiles~ ) California's current doesn't flow.

    ReplyDelete
  68. As far as improvements, that area was so blighted anyways that infrastructure improvements were probably necessary anyways.

Not with state funds ... your memory and mine are much different. The DC area of Maryland generated most of the capital in the State treasury and even the lottery. How much did Schaefer spend their? Our road improvement needs were far greater both for businesses and for residents. Why did he have to build a new highway between Baltimore's INNUH HABBAH and Ocean City? Why not improve route 29? There was the BWI corridor, 32 and 175. No, nothing leading to DC for Schaefer. Then, it was off to the mountains with another highway while DC metro Maryland residents suffered with choked off highways like 270, 29, and 495, etc.

Montgomery County generated 40% of the tax base at that time. 40%. Did we get 40% back? No. Not even close with Schaefer. And the University of Maryland system badly needed upgrades ... we did not need a Stadium for Arbutians.

  70. The impetus for the 'big move' started precisely when EBW died and ownership of the Orioles was put up for sale. Plans for the new stadium with B-more (not Williams) ownership in the plans starting in 1979.

Efforts to redevelop the downtown area started with the construction of the Baltimore Convention Center, which opened 1979. Harborplace, an urban retail and restaurant complex opened on the waterfront in 1980, followed by the National Aquarium in Baltimore, Maryland's largest tourist destination, and the Baltimore Museum of Industry in 1981. In 1992, the Baltimore Orioles baseball team moved from Memorial Stadium to Oriole Park at Camden Yards, located downtown near the harbor. Six years later the Baltimore Ravens football team moved into M&T Bank Stadium next to Camden Yards.

Once again, you've taken over a perfectly friendly and entertaining blog and made it a forum for your insults and your random bile. I've contributed to that by answering your stupid, insulting taunt. Apologies to my friends here. I'll go back to ignoring your idiocy now.

Come on, you don't have a Peric issued "Nats Fan" ID card? ;)

We all know who the bandwagon fans are.

  78. Not familiar with Savannah, so can't compare. But to me, Louisiana on a hot, humid day, oh, yes... Flat and endless, Slidell coming up on the highway, can't beat it. And when it's a tiny bit cooler, gimme some crawfish and jazz... drive a few miles west and go to a Cajun wedding, put them dollar bills on the bride's dress, get the fiddles playing and a dance a little two-step....

And from my perspective? Back to rampant hypocrisy and the pot calling the kettle black.

Hell yes you and Ghost are bandwagon fans. You didn't suffer through what original fans did. Sorry but "dems" the facts pal. You have the intellectual capacity of a flea and the imagination of stink worm. Please ignore me, you are beyond boring with your pathetic attempts at vituperative repartee.

    Get a life dude!

Swing dancing was invented in Savannah at the end of its pier under a huge gazebo/band stand area. Burned in the late sixties. They call it Carolina shag but it really originated in Savannah.

  83. WOW!! Love the internet. You get to read such fun stuff.

  84. Come on, 222 and Ghost, lay off peric for 10 minutes willya? Enjoy the day, enjoy life, Nats are in the play offs, it's beautiful!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  85. Cwj, wait Mitch wasn't one of the people who criticized Nats for shutting down SS and thought Nats won't go far in postseason without him?

    ReplyDelete
  86. Btw, I'm the best Nats fan :-)

    ReplyDelete
  87. I didn't know that about swing dancing and Savannah. Everyone says it's a lovely town. Might have to take a drive there one day.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Faraz- Like many on MLB network, Mitch is prone to changing his mind frequently :)

  90. I didn't know that about swing dancing and Savannah. Everyone says it's a lovely town

Actually a lot of the dancing happened on the long pier off of Tybee Island ... but close enough for government work.

Savannah hosts a huge jazz festival that lasts 2 weeks or more in March when they have the huge, traditional St. Patties Day celebration. Biggest one outside of Boston prolly just as big. Much like Mardi Gras in New Orleans.

  91. NatsLady- A little less counting the pre-game coverage.
I'm pretty excited to see any baseball right now, it's been what, 2 days? lol

Peric loves the attention. I put a smiley face next to my comment and vot Cwj as the "Best Nats fan".

I had the best night sleep last night knowing that the Nats made the post-season and don't have to worry about a "death match" game today.

I was skeptical of the new Wild Card format but this could be great for the fans. A 1 game winner take all is exciting.

    Bandwagon cretins.

  96. Faraz- The "analyst" on MLB network who annoys me the most is Harold Reynolds. At least when he mentions the Nats.
All he does is ramble on about Strasburg's shutdown.
Otherwise I kinda like his easy going, everything's fun type manner.

  97. Ghost- Thanks, but I think Natsfan may have me beat :-)

Been there. Been to Hardeville SC too. Nice place.

You and I often agree except on Lannan and Werth. 23 out of 25 ain't bad + Rendon.

  100. cwj, seriously, I think we're all equal in our fandom. :-)

On another note, I just noticed something. As they did last season, the playoff* team sites bring up a full-screen video of a key play from the season when you first navigate to the home page (you can check a "don't show me this again" box if you'd rather not watch it every time). Anyhoo, guess what the Nats video is? Just a certain player, from a certain town, stealing home against some supposedly old school and prestigious dude.

*One of the teams shown on the video is in the playoffs. The other - not so much. Waaaah! Maybe next year, when they're healthy. Yeah, that's the ticket. :-)

I like Harold whose stripes change quickly based on his flavor of the day.

He still carries that stigma of troubled days behind the scenes with the ladies at ESPN.

  107. How fast things change. Here's Ted Leonsis on the Wizards and his "I, I, I" and he doesn't even mention his other team the Caps.

What I find awkward is his saying "[Nats] wake up one day and they’re winning the pennant". No Ted, they didn't just wake up and win the pennant. They had a plan and spent a king's ransom for a difference changer in Jayson Werth and got rid of the ego head cases and most importantly, the Nats players listen to their coach. There is no Ovechkin here to act above and beyond his teammates.

"I look at the Nationals’ arc and it gives me hope and strength. I look at the Nationals losing a hundred games and finishing in the basement, and picking high and bringing in a free agent and making an astute trade, and then they wake up one day and they’re winning the pennant. We see data, we see exemplars of teams that have gone through tough times and they’re able to fight through it and keep their core together and add to it in the right way and that’s what I’m hoping we can do with the Wizards".

  110. NL, please. Why should I lay off peric when he just gratuitously insults me? I mean, did you read what he said? Maybe you should suggest to him that he lay off me, and everyone else he insults and taunts.

I'm enjoying the beautiful day and life as a fan of the best team in baseball plenty, thank you very much. I just don't appreciate his "more Nats fan than thou" attitude and I reserve the right to respond when he says something idiotic, especially when it's about me.

He calls me a bandwagon fan who didn't suffer through what the original fans did. Really? Not sure how much more original you can get than being an STH since day one. (Actually, someone who put down a deposit towards season tickets in 1987 might qualify... wait, I did that too.). So I guess I'm not an original fan because I didn't know who he was back then, and I didn't debate him on some blog at the time. Really? Hahahaha.

I'm a day one participant in, and original financial contributor to, this blog, by the way. Don't know if he was because he was Anonymous until Mark deprived him of that cloak for his poison pen this year.

Savannah is a very lovely town by the way.

  113. Guys! What is the problem with late afternoon games, and having to leave work, anyway?

Like, you seriously want to pretend you'll actually BE working, and not counting the moments till the game starts? I know that it's a decision made about baseball ratings and the Yankees. But I PREFER to think that it's about not torturing us through a loooong day waiting get things going! This is what sick leave is for. Or personal leave. Or annual leave.

  114. In other news and fwiw, according to an item currently linked to at left, MASN will have a viewing party (which my husband says sounds like--well never mind about that) at the Fairgrounds at 3 PM on Sunday.

  115. I have a feeling we will see a lot of flip flopping by the ALL the analysts/reporters about the nats. I mean for the Love of God - HEYMAN picked us to win. He is such a NY homer that I nearly choked when I read his article.

NOW if Rosenthal picks us, prepare for the Mayans.

JaneB, perhaps not everyone is lucky enough to have paid leave as an option.

  120. nobody in bmore is rooting for the Nats. Just like when they were missing a football team they didn't root for the Skins. So quite frankly I hope the Rangers beat them 15- 1. Then I don't have to look at anymore stupid cartoon birds. And PERIC is dead on with his earlier comments. I live amongst these Bmorons and its not fun.
