Major League Baseball today announced starting times for all postseason games through Tuesday, revealing that Game 1 of the NLDS between the Nationals and the winner of today's NL Wild Card Game between the Braves and Cardinals will begin at 3:07 p.m. EDT Sunday. Game 2 will be played at 4:37 p.m. EDT Monday.
Start times for Games 3-5 -- scheduled to be played Wednesday through Friday at Nationals Park -- have not been announced yet. But it's likely that Game 3 will feature another afternoon start, and it's possible the same could be true for potential Games 4 and 5.
Why all the day baseball? Because the Nationals, as the No. 1 seed in the NL, have the same Division Series schedule as the Yankees, the AL's top seed. And MLB and TBS (which is broadcasting all but two Division Series games over the next week) prefer to showcase the star-studded, 27-time World Series champs from New York in primetime whenever possible.
Thus, the Yankees will open their ALDS on the road Sunday night against the winner of tonight's Wild Card Game between the Orioles and Rangers at 6:15 p.m. EDT and will play Game 2 on Monday at 8:07 p.m., with the Nationals serving as the lead-in both days.
Sunday's Game 1 also will partially run up against the Redskins' 1 p.m. home game against the Falcons.
Start times for the final three games of the NLDS, all scheduled to be played in Washington, likely won't be announced until the last possible minute because they could be affected by the status of other Division Series that could be wrapped up by then. The NLDS between the Giants and Reds and the ALDS between the Tigers and Athletics could be over as early as Tuesday if one team sweeps the three-game series.
But if either of those series extends to four games, it would affect the starting time for Wednesday's Game 3 between the Nationals and Braves or Cardinals.
If the games at Nationals Park end up being played in the afternoon, outfielders from both teams will have to contend with the potentially difficult sun that resulted in three dropped flyballs over the course of two days Sept. 23-24.
Meanwhile, a familiar (and not-so-popular) face will be umpiring the Nationals' Division Series: Marvin Hudson. Hudson, who blew a call at first base during a Sept. 15 loss to the Braves that led to manager Davey Johnson's lone ejection of the season, was named by MLB as one of the six umpires on the crew for this series.
The full list of umpires: Joe West (crew chief), Paul Emmel, Ed Hickox, Hudson, Jim Joyce and Alfonso Marquez.
Per MLB rules, umpires are not allowed to work consecutive postseason rounds. Thus, anyone umpiring in the Division Series cannot work in the League Championship Series, though they are eligible to return for the World Series.

I don't think the Nats will have much problem disposing of either the Reds or the Giants. So we need to get past the Cards/Atl to get to the WS. Just my opinion.

Under MASN's plan for extended postseason coverage, the Nationals postgame show will be at the same time as the Orioles pregame show. How will they handle this, with MASN2 or the execrable "one happy MASN family" combined broadcast booth? If it's the latter...hello Charlie and Dave! (Although that's what it will probably be anyway.)

Perhaps not, but the chances are much better for the Nats than other teams.
Why?
For starters: consider how the Nats did it this year -- with over 350 games lost to injured starters.
Consider, too, the youth of the team -- most players have their most productive years from age 27-32. Neither Desi nor Danny are 27. (And, of course, Harper's still only 19!). Ramos is only 24, bit upside, and we should have him the entire season next year.
On the pitching side: Det seems like he's just now coming into his own; Stras will be available the entire season -- so will Storen. And, to boot: Det, Stras, JZ, Gio, and Storen are all under 27, too.
And most of the guys above are under team control for years.
As Boz (I think) pointed out: not a single player on the team had a career year (except for near rookies who fulfilled expected potential -- although I suppose Desi might have). LaRoche perhaps tied his best year, but: we've seen Morse, RZ, and others hit (over the entire season) better.
Nothing's guaranteed . . . but if you had to bet on _any_ team having a whole bunch of, say, 92+ win seasons starting this year -- you'd start with the Nats.
Go O's. Orioles fans deserve at least one home playoff game in the 20th year of Camden Yards. The Orioles, their fans and their ballpark were there before Angelos, and they'll still be there long after he's gone.
ReplyDeleteI'm as worried about Hudson behind the plate as in the field. In he last game he umpired here against Milwaukee, he was horrible. He had both JZimm and Peralta wondering what was a strike in that game.

ReplyDeleteThink about what would have happened if Medlen was the Braves #5 starter on Day #1. Theoretically they could have been the team with 99 wins instead of their postseason dependent on "lose and die" scenario and even if they win today, Medlen may not pitch again if the Braves get swept in 3 in the NLDS although he will most likely pitch Wednesday if they move on.

The same poll had him as the fifth best. Not saying he isn't a jerk, but he's a good technical umpire. Also, he might be down to only 2 or 3 chins. He's lost so much weight he's not conspicuous by his waddling motion.

What bothers me about West in the playoffs is that he tries to make the show about him, rather then the players.As to Hudson, he really does need to see an optometrist.I have found him to be just plain bad. Surprised that he got this assignment.

ReplyDeleteThe idea that the Braves were smarter than the Nats in handling their post-TJ surgery ace because theirs is able to start the WC game is beyond silly.
Also, everyone touts the streak he has of the Braves winning games he started without mentioning that it covers three seasons. Only 12 of those winning games were this year.
If they move on, they'll only have him for one game (Game 3) in the NLDS, while we'll have Gio for two, if necessary.
The post season is about the Nats and their opponent, not about Hudson and West. This is very disappointing

ReplyDeleteAside from the Sun Monster aspect (and hey, it could always be a cloudy day) the late afternoon start time for weekday games is actually the best. It avoids both the morning and afternoon rush hours for traffic, and there will be no need for the late night Metro service. Thus there will be no excuse for the stands not being packed from the first pitch clear through the last out. Also, if it turns cold and silences the power bats, it will be much worse after dark. And according to Davey, the sun problem is worst earlier in the afternoon.

I remember seeing my tax money burned by the governor of Baltimore William Donald Schafer for his good buddy Peter Angelos, mob lawyer, and his ownership group which included famous best selling author Tom Clancy (Reagan's favorite novelist).
Memorial stadium was the home to the other Orioles (the ones that actually won) plus ownership groups. The INNUH HAABAH was all Schaefer and his cronies. Don't get me started on that!

I agree but that's a very quirky group there and they had Francona there for such a long time that it was hard to change the culture. The Red Sox addressed that a bit by getting rid of Becket but they still have to deal with players like Pedroia and Lester who feel that that the inmates should run the asylum.

About 30 years ago, I never would have imagine that as a very ugly history that many in Montgomery County do not discuss was true about old Dietls, I will leave it at that as I witnessed a very ugly scene there in 1980.

I followed Valentine when he managed the Mets. He is a good baseball man but he gets on everyone's nerves very quickly. I don't see him getting a good managerial job anytime soon.
The Sox would be better off hiring someone more low key ( I hear they are after Farrell but I don't think the Jays will let him walk without compensation).

I feel strange and uncomfortable actually agreeing with Feel, but Angelos bought the Orioles after Eli Jacobs, the owner at the time of Camden Yards' opening, went bankrupt. Additionally, I believe that Camden Yards was funded by lottery proceeds and not by general tax revenues.

ReplyDeleteYou forgot about Ed Williams. Also, you forgot about the roads, the infrastructure surrounding and the INNUH HABBAH and idea borrowed from the city of Victoria in Canada. Where did that money come from? And as for lottery proceeds spent on a stadium? Instead of education or something just as worthwhile? It still comes out of folks pockets no matter how you look at it.

With respect to the lottery, that is something that people choose to participate in, not something, like general taxes, that are mandated. If they didn't buy a ticket, they weren't paying for the park. As far as improvements, that area was so blighted anyways that infrastructure improvements were probably necessary anyways.

Mostly the north and long the coast? The ultra liberal, earth tribe, Californial fusion religious types who mix Hinduism,(they call it Yoga but its Hinduism (I hate stealing ideas that are 5000 years old and calling them new and mine?) Buddhism mixed with Native American Shamanism and a lot of the Transgenerational trauma and grief they carry.
Clearly the two poles don't understand each other at all. One can't abide the other. Yet without each pole, the negative and the positive (each with an opinion as to which is negative and which positive ~smiles~ ) California's current doesn't flow.
As far as improvements, that area was so blighted anyways that infrastructure improvements were probably necessary anyways.
ReplyDeleteNot with state funds ... your memory and mine are much different. The DC area of Maryland generated most of the capital in the State treasury and even the lottery. How much did Schaefer spend their? Our road improvement needs were far greater both for businesses and for residents. Why did he have to build a new highway between Baltimore's INNUH HABBAH and Ocean City? Why not improve route 29? There was the BWI corridor, 32 and 175. No, nothing leading to DC for Schaefer. Then, it was off to the mountains with another highway while DC metro Maryland residents suffered with choked off highways like 270, 29, and 495, etc.
Montgomery County generated 40% of the tax base at that time. 40%. Did we get 40% back? No. Not even close with Schaefer. And the University of Maryland system badly needed upgrades ... we did not need a Stadium for Arbutians.
At least Jim Joyce is there to shed some tears in case of wrong calls.
ReplyDeleteThe impetus for the 'big move' started precisely when EBW died and ownership of the Orioles was put up for sale. Plans for the new stadium with B-more (not Williams) ownership in the plans starting in 1979.
ReplyDeleteEfforts to redevelop the downtown area started with the construction of the Baltimore Convention Center, which opened 1979. Harborplace, an urban retail and restaurant complex opened on the waterfront in 1980, followed by the National Aquarium in Baltimore, Maryland's largest tourist destination, and the Baltimore Museum of Industry in 1981. In 1992, the Baltimore Orioles baseball team moved from Memorial Stadium to Oriole Park at Camden Yards, located downtown near the harbor. Six years later the Baltimore Ravens football team moved into M&T Bank Stadium next to Camden Yards.
California seems like a foreign country to me. Can't say that about any other state, though Texas is close. Don't understand Texas very well, except Houston. Houston I understand because it is practically Louisiana, and Louisiana is where I would live (given a choice) if I didn't live here.

Not familiar with Savannah, so can't compare. But to me, Louisiana on a hot, humid day, oh, yes... Flat and endless, Slidell coming up on the highway, can't beat it. And when it's a tiny bit cooler, gimme some crawfish and jazz... drive a few miles west and go to a Cajun wedding, put them dollar bills on the bride's dress, get the fiddles playing and a dance a little two-step....

ReplyDeleteSwing dancing was invented in Savannah at the end of its pier under a huge gazebo/band stand area. Burned in the late sixties. They call it Carolina shag but it really originated in Savannah.

ReplyDeleteActually a lot of the dancing happened on the long pier off of Tybee Island ... but close enough for government work.
Savannah hosts a huge jazz festival that lasts 2 weeks or more in March when they have the huge, traditional St. Patties Day celebration. Biggest one outside of Boston prolly just as big. Much like Mardi Gras in New Orleans.

I had the best night sleep last night knowing that the Nats made the post-season and don't have to worry about a "death match" game today.
I was skeptical of the new Wild Card format but this could be great for the fans. A 1 game winner take all is exciting.

As they did last season, the playoff* team sites bring up a full-screen video of a key play from the season when you first navigate to the home page (you can check a "don't show me this again" box if you'd rather not watch it every time). Anyhoo, guess what the Nats video is? Just a certain player, from a certain town, stealing home against some supposedly old school and prestigious dude.
*One of the teams shown on the video is in the playoffs. The other - not so much. Waaaah! Maybe next year, when they're healthy. Yeah, that's the ticket. :-)

I like Harold whose stripes change quickly based on his flavor of the day.

They had a plan and spent a king's ransom for a difference changer in Jayson Werth and got rid of the ego head cases and most importantly, the Nats players listen to their coach. There is no Ovechkin here to act above and beyond his teammates.

(Actually, someone who put down a deposit towards season tickets in 1987 might qualify... wait, I did that too.). I'm a day one participant in, and original financial contributor to, this blog, by the way. Don't know if he was because he was Anonymous until Mark deprived him of that cloak for his poison pen this year.
Savannah is a very lovely town by the way.

But I PREFER to think that it's about not torturing us through a loooong day waiting get things going! This is what sick leave is for. Or personal leave. Or annual leave.
