Photo by Mark Zuckerman / NATS INSIDER The Nats open an 11-game homestand tonight against the Cardinals. |
So begins an 11-game homestand, the longest of the season, with the defending World Series champion Cardinals in town the next four days. St. Louis will be up against a familiar foe tonight in Edwin Jackson (a member of that World Series club).
Left-hander Jaime Garcia gets the nod for the Cards, facing a Nats lineup that broke out of its slump in a big way last night. Plenty of updates to come, so please check back...

7:07 p.m. -- And we're underway on a warm, 88-degree night in the nation's capital. Appears to be a late-arriving crowd.
7:15 p.m. -- A very impressive top of the first for Edwin Jackson. He struck out Jon Jay, Carlos Beltran and Allen Craig, displaying some filthy stuff including a 96 mph fastball. Would've had a 1-2-3 inning except he deflected Matt Holliday's comebacker and Danny Espinosa couldn't get to it quite in time to make the play.
7:26 p.m. -- Well, I guess Bryce Harper is feeling pretty hitterish right now, huh? He just crushed a 2-0 meatball from Jaime Garcia to the back of the right-field bullpen for his 15th homer of the season and his third in 24 hours. That was as impressive as any the rookie has hit lately, both because of the picture-perfect swing he put on the pitch and because it came off a tough left-hander. That's only the fifth homer Garcia has ever given up to a left-handed hitter. Nats take a 2-0 lead after one.
7:39 p.m. -- Jackson's first five outs recorded tonight: All strikeouts. Man, he is in a zone, showing off a devastating breaking ball to go along with his fastball. Then Rafael Furcal had the nerve to ground out to second base to end the top of the second, the first out recorded on a ball in play against Jackson tonight. The nerve.
7:53 p.m. -- Three innings down, seven strikeouts for Jackson. You'd think his former teammates would know his repertoire a little better, wouldn't you? Whatever the case, the Nats will gladly take it. They lead 2-0 in the middle of the third.
8:11 p.m. -- Harper takes another Garcia pitch deep to center and ... comes about three feet short of his fourth home run in two nights. No worries, the Nats still scored a run on Adam LaRoche's sac fly to right. So it's now 3-0 after three impressive innings.
8:21 p.m. -- If you know baseball, you've probably heard of the "neighborhood play," where a second baseman turning a double play is given the benefit of the doubt even if his foot is only in the neighborhood of the base. Well, Danny Espinosa wasn't even close to the neighborhood in the top of the fourth ... unless that neighborhood is the size of Montana. So props to umpire Brian Knight for making the right call there, even though the Nats weren't happy about it.
8:37 p.m. -- Make it eight strikeouts for Jackson through five innings. That gives the Nationals pitching staff 1,068 K's for the season, matching their all-time high set in 2010. And there are still 32 1/2 games left to play. They still lead 3-0 in the middle of the fifth.
8:49 p.m. -- How much difference has Werth made on the Nats lineup since his return from a broken wrist? A huge difference. Werth's updated slash line through the fifth inning of tonight's game: .344/.416/.489. Those numbers all just took a big jump up when Werth launched his first homer since coming off the DL, a towering shot over the visitors bullpen to give the Nats a 4-0 lead. There's been some concern Werth couldn't hit for power anymore. Well, he just showed it there in a big way. And that .489 slugging percentage isn't too shabby, either.
9:12 p.m. -- Make it 6-0 Nats as they plate a couple more runs in the bottom of the sixth. And who else but Werth (fielder's choice) and Harper (sharp single over the shortstop's head) to drive in those two runs. It's been a banner couple of days for the top two guys in the lineup.
9:21 p.m. -- A nice, over-the-shoulder catch by Harper to end the seventh (and possibly Jackson's night). His line to this point: 7 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 9 K, 105 pitches. Big-time stuff against a big-time lineup. Still 6-0 at the stretch.
9:38 p.m. -- Jesus Flores ropes a two-run single to left, making it 8-0, and this one has officially become a rout. So much so that Davey let Jackson hit for himself. He'll retake the mound for the top of the eighth.
9:46 p.m. -- So much for the shutout. The Cards finally score a run (their first in 28 innings) thanks to Ryan Zimmerman's airmail of a throw to first base. No problem, because Jackson still finished out the inning to complete an eight-inning, 123-pitch masterpiece. Now 8-1 as we go to the bottom of the eighth.
10:06 p.m. -- It's over. Nats win 8-1 as Michael Gonzalez finishes off Jackson's gem. That was a big-time thumping of a big-time opponent, and a nice way to open this 11-game homestand.
Guai Fung!
ReplyDelete(You there, in the back row, stand up straight and quit goofing off. Don't make me come back there!)
ReplyDeleteWelcome home, boys. We missed you.
(You, in the first row - yes, you - I hope you brought enough gum for everybody.)
Go, EJ!! Go, NATS!!
having just joked around while taking the official 2012 team photo (you can sort of make it out above).
What does that mean, Sofa?
ReplyDeleteanyways looking forward to the series.
Here's hoping we get off on the right foot with a big win. Go Edwin!
ReplyDeleteI want Edwin to DEAL against his former team. GYFNG!
ReplyDeleteGO EDWIN! GYFNG!!!!
ReplyDeleteThis is the start of our next winning streak.
Let's go Nats! I feel a win coming on.
ReplyDeleteHere you go, NatsJack.
ReplyDeleteMLB Network getting ready to do piece on Strasburg purportedly 2 to 3 more starts before StrasNoMas
ReplyDeleteFunny, the MLB Network just showed Mark's tweet:
ReplyDeleteDavey spoke to Strasburg on team plane last night, told pitcher he'll make "probably 2 or 3 more" starts before shutdown.
Let's keep our helmets on tonight. ;)
ReplyDeleteGo Nats!
I know we already did this topic to death but here is the CloseCalls on Harper's ejection (this is the site that tracks ejections). You can see from the comments that opinions were very divided. Interesting that not only is this Harper's first ejection, it's the Nationals first ejection of 2012.
ReplyDeleteEjection of Harper
http://www.closecallsports.com/2012/08/ejection-143-cb-bucknor-2.html
Michele, did I read correctly a few threads ago: you're on pace to attend about half of the home games this year? Can that be right? That's a stunning performance. Amazing consistentcy.
ReplyDeleteFaraz, that's the phonetic spelling of "GYFNG!"
ReplyDeleteThis is gonna be a Whopper of a series. This could be the best baseball we have seen all year -- and that's saying something.
ReplyDeleteFor Dave & Hiramhover:
ReplyDeleteOur real C is behind the plate!!!!!
GoJFlooooooooooooooooooo!!!GoNaaaaaaaaaaaats!!!
GYFNG!!
ReplyDeleteLady, that site is great, thanks for linking it!
Ya know, Doc, first you cry "uncle," but now you you've got me feeling like Michael Corleone--like you're trying to pull me back in.
ReplyDeleteTime to get back to my formula. Win every series.
ReplyDeleteThese are some games I really wish I could attend; I can recall Cards-Nats match-ups in the not-too-distant past that were quite exciting, even when the Nats weren't exactly playing great baseball (an extra-inning Nats win over the Cardinals in 2010 was the last game I made it to in DC). And I hope the atmosphere at the park matches the importance of the series.
ReplyDeleteBut at least I'll be able to watch this one live (on MLB.tv); I've been having to watch replays the past six or seven games (albeit without knowing the results). This should be fun. GYFNG!
I see empty seats.
ReplyDeleteYes, Carp said it was a "fashionably" late-arriving crowd and not a "good" crowd. All I can say is that I have a lot of people gone for the last weekend before schools starts in Virginia.
ReplyDeleteNice to see by EJax. Great movement!
ReplyDeleteShould be big crowds this weekend. I will be there on Sunday.
ReplyDeleteKind of surprised Bryce is in there. Hope he is seeing the ball well. Garcia can be a soft tosser.
ReplyDeleteEarly Thunder from Harper...BOOM!!!
ReplyDeleteI guess Bryce is hot, don't you think so?
ReplyDeleteKeep the pressure on; don't let up.
ReplyDeleteApparently Bryce is seeing the ball just fine!

Answer questioned. LOL Or maybe random thoughts answered.
Who should sit against lefties? Not!
ReplyDeleteSwift, Legion of BAMH
ReplyDeleteHaha Gonat...a little reverse whammy there...Let me try...
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised Morse is in there, hope he is seeing the ball well...
What - no helmet spike?!
ReplyDeleteGive Werth some credit too, worked a walk, got Garcia in the stretch early...
ReplyDeleteGonat, Do you remember when Bryce was hot after his callup he hit lefties better. It's a matter of seeing the ball well.
ReplyDeleteThis is the third time this year we've gotten a 2 run lead in the first thanks to a Harper homer, right?
ReplyDeleteSteveM, great point.
ReplyDeleteSwift, big time credit to Werth doing what leadoff guys are supposed to do.
-Dan-, no 3 HRs in the 1st inning but on June 3rd was a solo jack!
ReplyDeleteBryce's HRs by inning:
ReplyDelete1st 3
2nd 0
3rd 2
4th 2
5th 4
6th 0
7th 1
8th 2
9th 1
Molina's swing looked awful, still looks hurt
ReplyDeleteGonat, yeah, it came after Lombo's leadoff homer against the Braves, thanks for the help, i had forgotten. The other if i remember well was in Flushing against the Mets.
ReplyDeleteLol, Flores to Edwin: "Strikeouts are fascist, throw some ground balls, more Democratic"
ReplyDeleteHarps 5th HR vs LHP
ReplyDelete-Dan- I just have been going through box scores, yes, 2 run 1st inning jack against Chris Young of the Mets
ReplyDeletehttp://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=23273767&c_id=mlb&topic_id=vtp_interstate
ReplyDeleteHere you go -Dan-
Swift, um, McCatty to EJax, "Strikeouts are bulls--t. Get some quick outs to your fielders".
ReplyDeleteHaha, if there's ever a pitching coach movie, I hope it's based on McCatty aka "quote machine"...The reporters should interview every day, he's gold Jerry, gold...
ReplyDeleteSwift, he believes what he says and says what he believes.
ReplyDeleteLike it or not, he and Rizzo want hard throwers who can get K's when they really need them to strand baserunners.
LaRoche doesn't have the reflexes any more like he used to. Looked like Zim last night.
ReplyDelete7 K through 3

ReplyDeleteThat Werth guy sux. LOL
ReplyDeleteI think Harper is seeing the ball well tonight.
ReplyDelete(Understatement of the year?)
Almost
ReplyDeleteI'm on board 100% with the pitching philosophy too, hard throwers get wins in October...
ReplyDeleteMcCatty to EJax, "Strikeouts are bulls--t. Get some quick outs to your fielders".
ReplyDeleteI don't think it's that simple. Sometimes guys just can't get a bat on your stuff.
Davey mentioned that regarding Dwight Gooden. They wanted him to get less K's, and Davey said, "what? you want me to change how he pitches?"
(Yes, Gooden had problems later, but it was because of too many innings too young, and too much partying)
Wonk, you are right. Its philosophy.
ReplyDeleteLaRoche swings at ball 3 to help Garcia
ReplyDeleteIt's also about executing pitches...certainly appears the book on the Nats lineup is to go off speed and breaking balls, but if they're not quality pitches, the Nats will kill fastballs when ahead in the count....
ReplyDeleteHarper induced hustle by Ryan for a base hit. Great throw, greater hustle by Zimm. Morse walks on four pitches. ALR? We'll take the sac fly!
ReplyDeleteSomebody Must have missed the game last night, Zimmerman smoked the ball to right 3 times last night, he's fine...
ReplyDeleteAlso, the Nats are still 15-3 when Werth, Zimmerman, and Morse are in the starting line-up (not including the game when Morse was HBP and left in the 1st inning)
ReplyDeleteHold them again ejax
ReplyDeleteSorry, 1 run in that situation let Garcia off the hook.
ReplyDeleteSure, LaR got that Sac Fly but he swings at ball 3 and falls in a 2-1 count then 2-2 and lost count leverage.
Well, again you gotta give Werth a lot of credit for his ability to get on base leading off.Too bad to only get one run that inning though.
ReplyDeleteMolina can't swing without pain. Why goof around with balls
ReplyDeleteGonat, I'm not saying it was a great AB by ALR but With one out I'll take the sac fly, rather then say a ground ball double play. Would've liked Desi to come through with guys on the corners.
ReplyDeleteWow, now we're not giving the "Neighborhood play" Are they going to start calling that too!!
ReplyDeletetoo much to allow there I suppose on the DP
ReplyDeleteHe better make that call EVERY time now...I'm guessing he won't...
ReplyDeletejust need an out
ReplyDeleteDanny has to get the lead runner.
ReplyDeletemake your pitch with the pitcher coming up
ReplyDeleteI think the ump thought he had to come off the base to take the throw.
ReplyDeleteI'm not blaming Danny there, that call is NEVER made....Unless the base runner is named Jeter...
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteSwift, you don't think the ump thought Zim's throw pulled him off?
ReplyDeleteNow you have to call that consistently.
I had no problem with the ump on that call. Danny was way off the bag. No problemo! EJax looks pretty darn good!
ReplyDeleteYeah, but it was egregious, he was all the way off the bag and stradling nothing but dirt, not "on his way" off the bag, where one leg is kinda over it. Still, it's kind of in keeping with this whole crew to get noticed.
ReplyDeleteWonk, it was Espi, not Desi
ReplyDeleteThanks, Gonat. Let me rephrase:
ReplyDeleteI disagree. The "neighborhood" has boundaries. On replay, he was pretty far off the bag -- at least 3 feet. Ump made a good call, imho. Espi came off _way_ too soon for that to be called out.
Now the Nats go on 7 pitches in this inning. Just not smart the last 5 batters
ReplyDeleteDanny still leads NL in K
ReplyDeleteWe have umps who have trouble with Safe/Out, Fair/Foul, and Ball/Strike....How about they get those right a little more often before enforcing the "look at me" calls like the neighborhood play and ejections for thrown equipment...Get the important stuff right first blue...
ReplyDeleteSo, following up on my previous post, since exposure to second-hand negativity and complaining destroys brain cells and makes one stupid(er), I wonder, does exposure to stupidity make people complain more?
ReplyDeleteFlores is handling those balls in the dirt really well
ReplyDeleteWhoa Sofa, are you saying the Legion of Doom is making me dumber? That ain't not good...
ReplyDeleteToo many balls 19 batters 33 balls
ReplyDeleteIs that former mayor Anthony Williams in the second row behind home, in the red curly-W cap?
ReplyDeleteMan, that's not like Beltran to be that aggressive, pretty cool ending to that inning.
ReplyDeleteTop of the order coming up; keep the pressure on; don't let up.
ReplyDeleteHuge K of the leadoff batter. Didn't think he would throw the slider twice in a row!
ReplyDeleteGot Beltran out of the way for the 6th inning.
Swift, not me. Scientists.
ReplyDeleteYep, Werth sux. He has no power. His ISO sux. His SLG sux.
ReplyDeleteGo werth
ReplyDeletedazed and confused for Werth? ought to be Whole Lotta Love after that bomb.
ReplyDeleteThe Legion of BOOM!!!!
ReplyDeleteI think somebody is very wrong about Werth not having any power anymore.
ReplyDeleteAnything can happen of course, but so far the NL teams outside the East just have not looked all that great to me...I mean yes Cin and St Louis have a lot of wins, but they play a lot of games v Hou, CHC, and Mil...and they didn't play the AL East in inter-league either...Nats won 5 of 6 v SF, and we'll see with the new-look Dodgers...
ReplyDeleteBOOM goes the Lead-Off Man
ReplyDeleteThat was a blast by Werth. About 25k here tonight.
ReplyDeleteGarcia's pitches all look like they're in the 80s, not a whole lot of difference in speed if he's not hitting his spots or particularly deceptive.
ReplyDeleteEspi really in a funk again. 5 for his last 37.
ReplyDeleteHoping that gives him some reverse un-funk.
ReplyDeleteEJax looked amped up tonight, really driving on the front leg, his stuff is moving like crazy!
ReplyDeleteEJ is TCB
ReplyDeleteNats Rule, Cardinals Drool....
ReplyDeleteLOL at all the Zeppelin references. "We're gonna groove" is apt tonight - for our guys easy playing and Garcia's pitches.
ReplyDeleteGood for Dan
ReplyDeleteGonat at 8:48, good job!
ReplyDeleteGonat on fire..just fixed Danny's swing
ReplyDeleteehay, when the game gives you lemons, play lemon songs.
ReplyDelete"Bring it on Home" please.
ReplyDeleteFlores hitting the 5 1/2 hole.
ReplyDeleteGoing for the jugular would be seding up Tyler here. But Edwin could hack something
ReplyDeleteGhost/Swift, I thought I would give it a try! Its worked twice tonight.
ReplyDeleteUnlucky
ReplyDeleteMan, that is some LOUSY luck on babip.
ReplyDeletei forgot the memo about reverse jinx psychology complaining
ReplyDeleteSofa, I am just recycling some old junk.
ReplyDeleteCould have been worse, Ive seen triple plays on balls like that
ReplyDeleteLucky he didn't catch it as Desi would have been doubled off 3rd. Unlucky as it would have gone into CF if he doesn't get a glove on it.
ReplyDeleteKeep the pressure on; another hit or two, please.
ReplyDeleteugly way to get an rbi
ReplyDeleteTrue, really bad luck would have been multiple outs.
ReplyDelete"Baby Come on Home"
ReplyDeleteEugene? are you still nervous b/c of the losing streak?or did you just take The Over tonight?
ReplyDeleteI believe Eugene is not underestimating the Card's offense.
ReplyDeletewill it be "Hats Off To Harper"
ReplyDeleteyeah, I don't leave the needle on that one...
Love Bryce going with the pitch!
ReplyDelete"Hats Off to Harper"
ReplyDeleteOoh, coke owed
ReplyDeleteThe Nats have more than Four Sticks tonight.
ReplyDeleteAnd Matheny may be thinking this is When The Levee Breaks...
ReplyDeleteUgly RBI? I don't think so.
ReplyDeleteNo, no panic. Just respectful of the Cardinals' offense (and their whole franchise). So, as I said, keep the pressure on.
ReplyDeleteJust checked, no Walters for us to Walk.
ReplyDelete(This is the best use some of these titles may have ever had. )
Very true, Cards are champs for a reason...but it feels a little like a vacation to be out of the NL East...
ReplyDeleteI mean Jimmy Rollins actually plays hard against the Nats! Cliff Lee wins games against the Nats! Carlos Lee steals bases against the Nats!...I'm glad to see some other teams..Lol
I agree, Eugene. Step on 'em and grind it in
ReplyDeleteRyan, that wasn't a strike. Oh, we'll, we picked up two more. I loved Bryce's hit, and I'll take Werth's RBI groundout. 6-0 is a good thing.
Gonat said...
ReplyDeleteYep, Werth sux. He has no power. His ISO sux. His SLG sux.
Clearly a bench player, right?
Joe and Eugene, I think you are saying the Cards should be "Trampled Underfoot"?

The last week for the Nats: Good Times Bad Times
OK, Werth IS playing well. No need to rub it in to those opposing opinions.
ReplyDeleteI know he used to work in St. L, but man Carp sure knows a lot about the Cardinals! I'm waiting for him to tell me their food allergies when they come up to bat...
ReplyDeleteDang, ehay, you beat me to "Trampled."
ReplyDeleteI'm gonna crawl over to the coke machine...
All you people who dis Bryce....
ReplyDeleteYeesh . . . Cards have 0 runs and just 13 hits over the last three games (including this one thus far).
ReplyDeleteAs I wrote yesterday, I'm hoping that it's the start of a week-long batting slump for the team.
Or perhaps you are commenting on Werth's play as What Is, and Peric is saying it is What Should Never Be?
ReplyDeleteBest to find common ground, no matter how small the acreage.
ehay2k said...
ReplyDeleteOK, Werth IS playing well. No need to rub it in to those opposing opinions.
True . . . but the thing is: Werth has played well all season, before and after the injury. Yes, his power was down, but he has been the most consistent "get on base" machine on the team all season long.
Another SportsCenter moment for Bryce...and no equipment was damaged during the play...
ReplyDeleteBest to find common ground, no matter how small the acreage.
ReplyDeleteIt's the battle of evermore...
For those of us who saw Paul Blair play CF, I think Bryce is now playing a few steps too shallow. Good play on that one though.
ReplyDeleteYou're right Wonk, I was a Werth-basher for a long time, have to give him his due...He's had consistent ABs all year...MMMMM Crow
ReplyDeleteSofa, I will buy you a beer for that one!

Paul Blair. I loved those O's teams.

ReplyDeleteOh wait, not a Zeppelin song.
Manassas, you owe me a Pepsi!
ReplyDeleteEugene...did the lizard ever throw anyone out?
ReplyDelete3 crooked number innings tonight so far!
ReplyDeletewhat? only eight runs scored so far. I am disappointed.
ReplyDeleteGonat, I was tempted to look at the Robert Plant discography for any song with BABIP (unlikely} or 5 1/2 hole (possible).
ReplyDeleteThe 5-1/2 Hole would be a good name for a band, better name for a bar ...
ReplyDeleteSwift River @ 9:39: No, but he beat her turtle (named Ryan Zimmerman) in a series of races that were staged as part of science fair experiment. And I'm not making this up, I promise.
ReplyDeleteSwift, the lizard may have insured his throwing leg in a freak "falling lid-weight" accident.
ReplyDelete*injured. Dang auto correct.
ReplyDeleteWell Eugene, w/out a cortisone shot, I'm sure the turtle would have no chance...
ReplyDeletethe five and a half hole is about where I quit playing golf and find the nineteenth.
ReplyDelete108 pitches and counting. Why push it.
ReplyDeleteZimmerman, really?
ReplyDeleteok, last one - that Zim throw was Over The Hills And Far Away
ReplyDeleteEjax is tired, McCatty just gave him a "Your time Is Gonna Come" look.
ReplyDeleteMan, that Zimmerman Throwing thing is Weird!
ReplyDeleteThat throw was Goin To California
ReplyDeleteblovy8,
ReplyDeleteActually I think it took a 'Misty Mountain Hop' into the stands...
I could see Zimmerman as a turtle, but he'd be pissed thinking it was a Terrapin, being a former Cavalier, that would not do.

ReplyDeleteEast, as in toward The Ocean.
ReplyDeleteSo shut it down here, let that be unearned, at least.
ReplyDeleteRyan Zimmerman is going to get roasted on Intentional Talk with a "Got Heeeem"
ReplyDeleteImagine how great it's going to be when Stras and Jordan are 28 and nobody will care about their pitch/inning counts...
ReplyDeleteI put that one on a tee for you, ehay. A tee for one.
ReplyDeleteYou know, you may want to pitch Edwin again in five days, Dave.
ReplyDeleteI don't get Davey. Call it a night.
ReplyDeleteTy Sofa, but I am not very good hitting off a tee, so it actually counts as extra credit. :-)
