If you're going to try to pull off your second straight sweep on the road, might as well send your ace to the mound. Yep, Stephen Strasburg gets the nod, looking to improve his record to 8-1 and the team's record to 11-2 when he starts. He'll be opposed by young Kyle Drabek, the Blue Jays' key acquisition from the Phillies in the Roy Halladay trade several years back who to this point is an unimpressive 8-14 with a 5.26 ERA in 29 career starts.
One key change to the Nationals' lineup for this afternoon's getaway matinee at Rogers Centre: Adam LaRoche is not starting for the first time since May 7 (when he missed four games with an oblique strain). So Tyler Moore makes his first career start at first base in LaRoche's place.

I'm really, really worried about Strasburg today. Last start was stressful. He was laboring even before he got to 100 pitches, and then he ended up throwing 120. I think today will be tough. Gorzo and Det should get ready to pitch a while tonight.

ReplyDeleteDrabek has been pretty meh this year. I expect we will get some knocks. I am concerned about SS today coming off a very laborious 125 pitch effort in 6 innings on Friday. I expect Davie and Cat to keep a real close eye on him today.

ReplyDeleteIn a perfect world we would have ran Gorzo out there and saved stras for opening with the yankes. Either way, our 2,3,4 vs yankes 3,4,5. I like the matchups. But we don't want to look ahead and blow this. So go stras and I'm looking forward to a 2 day rest getting ALR back on point. And here is to Bryce keeping it up!!!!!

ReplyDeleteI'm glad we're going for the sweep with Strasburg on the mound. Yes, it would be fun to have Stras, Gio, and JZnn face the Yanks, but all wins count equally in the standings and Gio, JZnn, and EJax pitching to the pinstripes will do just fine.
Following up on the thread on the last post, there are a handful of certainties in life:
1. Death
2. Taxes
3. Davey will never move Zim from the No. 3 spot (except perhaps to hit cleanup if we end up with injuries).
4. Zim will not have 2011 Werth-like numbers at the end of the season.
Interesting discussion Section 222. Davey the sabermatrician, is not always the sabermatrician that he might be.

Just sayin'...it's really important for the Nats to let him give us baserunners.
In terms of "sabermetric" lineups, you generally put your best hitters #1, #2, #4, #5, followed by #3. So, perhaps Zimm hitting 3rd actually makes sense for the time being.

ReplyDeleteWith regard to SS pitch count, I am less concerned about it impacting his performance today, than I am about the fact that he routinely needs to throw so many pitches to achieve that performance. Eight strikeouts is enough, I want more foul pop fly outs and knuckled grounders to the infield.
As for LaRoche sitting, I also appreciate that they have worked in a start for Moore knowing that he likely returns to AAA upon DeRosa's activation.
Finally, some were debating Harper's affinity for the Yankees as a future threat. (more wind) I doubt that by the time he is free to leave that the desire will be as strong. Once he wins a few championships here and Jeter/Arod/Mo retire, it will seem like just another team.

Good point about the timing of LaRoche's day off corresponding to Moore being here to play 1B, whatsanattau.

ReplyDeleteNot only will Zim not move from the #3 spot, he won't move closer to the plate, either. The comments in this regard are almost verbatim to the comments last year when he came off the DL after the abdominal thing (you could look it up, as Casey would say). It just painfully (no pun intended) obvious that he does not do well upon returning from any length of time off. The upside is that his stuggles at the plate have in no way impacted his impeccable fielding. His bat will come around, and the fear of that happening at any time is what keeps getting Harper pitches to hit. Zim has been hitting the ball sharply, just hitting it at people. He doesn't look lost at the plate, as Espi did earlier this year. It looks like maybe his bat is coming around, too.

OK - taking a very legitimate break. For all of you that follow such stat things -- it seems to me that when Lombardozzi is at the plate, he usually ( well , not that first ab), makes the pitcher use up a lot of bullets. Is there a stat for the number of pitches a batter uses up? He just seems to foul off a lot of pitches, and even if he ends up getting out, he wears down the pitcher - something you don't see in the box for the game. I feel like there have been games where he single- handedly knocked out a starting pitcher by using up so many pitches. Is that just my impression of him? Good trait in a lead off guy. Happy for TMo -- getting that first one. I just love our rookies!!!!!!! How does he look at first?

Sources say that the Nats want a club to pay the rest of his remaining salary and give up at least one legitimate player.
Talks between the Dodgers and Nationals have been only preliminary, according to sources, while the Rockies kicked the tires on the pitcher before being turned off by the price. For the Dodgers, Lannan would be an alternative to left-hander Ted Lilly while he is sidelined with a shoulder issue.

I don't think Rizzo will give up right now on DeRosa.
On HenRod, it won't happen that he goes back to the Minors except on a Rehab assignment. Once his rehab is over, he has NO options and can only be waived and won't cleared waivers as someone will take him. Choices are trade him or hope he comes back improved. I have felt for a long time to trade him to an AL team and get what you can.

ReplyDeleteAnd 72 after 5 innings is downright good. Stras hitting his stride. Probably "hooked," as Davey likes to say, after 6, because of his high pitch count last time out, but he could go 7 or even 8 with a little luck. He'll have six days of rest after this start because of the off days unless Davey decides to have Wang skip a start.

I am listening to the Toronto broadcasters. They ended the last inning with "That's two homeruns for the Nationals today. Three yesterday and two more on Monday. This is a VERY good team." Sweet sweet music!!

More importantly, has FP made reference to Harper's "that's a clown question, bro" response to the Toronto media type who asked if 19 year old Bryce was going to have a beer after the game? They're making t-shirts already. (seriously)

Zimmerman's demeanor rarely changes, never too high or too low as he likes to say, and he has maintained that same outward confidence throughout this season. The inflammation in his right AC joint hasn't helped, and while it's certainly manageable, where it could affect him is in his pre- and post-game work.
Obviously a different part of the body, but when Zimmerman returned from his abdominal tear in 2011, it wasn't until about six weeks later that he was his full self in the weight room and elsewhere to get himself into shape to be the player he is on the field.
It's common for players to return from injury when they're "good enough to play," so to speak, but not at their prime operating health. To this point, though, Zimmerman has declined to use the shoulder as an excuse.
"He's hard for me to read a little bit because he's so talented, but he's really not attacking the ball," Johnson said. "He went through spells where he hit it hard and hit it at people and balls that would have gone nine miles if the wind hadn't held it up, but I haven't seen him hitting the ball like that in a while. I don't know if his shoulder's bothering him or what but we certainly need him."

Another random question for you -- who on the team has NOT hit a home run yet this year? I can't think of anyone but Morse. All 3 catchers, all the quasi- regular outfielders, all the infielders and most of the utility guys. Can you think of anyone else?

ReplyDeleteI do think we'll beat our Nationals Park attendance this week, single and total for all three games. The Nationals blacked out these games from reward program and they wouldn't even allow rain out trade ins for that day. Plus the vouchers in those five game flex plans where for any games expect Yankees. So basicly all the seats will be paid, which is what they count. Plus they selling the unsold boxes as seats too. And you know standing room is coming too.
I expect to average 44K this weekend with over 45K on Saturday.
Place your bets.

In decreasing order of plate appearances for less than 50, the following have not hit any (for those with 10 or more plate appearances):
DeRosa, Morse, Maldonado
That's it. (plus pitchers)

Why? This is what Tyler Moore has done with 2 previous years in the Minors. Blogger Russ Adams has been saying it for 2 years as Russ lives in Harrisburg and follows the H'burg Senators and most of the Minor Leaguers.
I was never impressed with Tyler's OBP which is what I thought would hold him back and still may. The kid is definitely a power hitter, but 1 game doesn't make a career.

Sure there are others who think Moore has a good future, and of course one game doesn't prove he belongs in the bigs, but there is no one who has sung his praises and pushed for him to get a shot in the lineup more than peric. He takes alot of abuse in here, much of it deserved, but for the sake of comity and camraderie amongst our community of imaginary friends on this most enjoyable afternoon of Natitude, I choose to give him a shout out.
Sect 222, when Skole becomes a star for the Nats, then I will give him credit ;-)

I never understood that "trust but verify" business (and I think Reagan was quoting someone else). If I trust someone, I don't NEED to verify.
I don't send a private detective out to follow Cunegonde around and verify that she's not stepping out on me, because I trust her.
If I DID hire a detective, that would be proof that I DIDN'T trust her.
It should be "Trust OR verify." Makes more sense that way.
Now back to our game.

ReplyDeleteGood lord, we are homer happy playing the Jays. We have broken 2 of their pitchers and kicked their bullpen around. I don't remember ever doing that to any team (we might have beaten up a bullpen 1 or 2 times, but not for an entire series, plus I can't remember breaking 2 pitchers)

Most fun at a ballgame was hanging at a Spring Training game listening to NatsJack and some other NatsInsiders discuss the 2012 team.
TyMo... when was the last time a Nat hit 3 HRs in one game?
ReplyDeleteDunn did it at least once. Also, Josh Willingham hit two grand slams in one game up in Milwaukee in 2009.
This sort of reminds me of the pre-Soriano days at RFK, when the Nats would hit balls to the warning track, and the other teams would be putting them in the seats. The Jays' flies don't seem to be carrying, do they?

ReplyDeleteI I suppose what it really means is "verify before trusting," which is what I tried to do when I went back to find Scooter's impressively prescient comment. It didn't take long to realize that I wouldn't find a post on Feb. 30, even though this is a leap year. Scooter's downfall was he got greedy. We didn't hear that Morse was injured until March if I'm not mistaken.
