Lannan, Perez, Leon coming up

With the calendar about to shift to September, the Nationals have plans to expand their roster in time for Saturday's game against the Cardinals.

Manager Davey Johnson said the club will recall left-hander John Lannan, catcher Sandy Leon and outfielder Eury Perez from Class AAA Syracuse. Veteran utilityman Mark DeRosa also will be activated off the disabled list after missing the last month with an abdominal strain.

The Nationals plan more reinforcements next week, after Syracuse's season ends on Monday. Johnson hinted that outfielder Corey Brown and reliever Christian Garcia will join the big-league roster at that point.

Of the September call-ups, Lannan figures to have the greatest impact. The left-hander was kept at Class AAA the entire season (aside from two spot starts during doubleheaders) specifically to take over the rotation spot that will become vacant when Stephen Strasburg is shut down.

I kind of feel bad for Corey Brown who had a break out season. Not sure I see Perez as an improvement ... he's just learned to walk more in AAA. But, Bernadina has had a break out season.

As far as Harper. Looks like Davey was right again. Harper's development was better contrived in the majors under his and Eck's watchful eyes. Watch out because he is more than likely to do the same with Rendon next season.

Why not keep John pitching in AAA until their season is over, he won't start in the bigs for a while Stras due for two more starts or so?

Don't think Lannan's turn in the 'Cuse rotation was going to come up again before the end of the season.

Sec. 3 - the only thing phil can keep up with is negativity and he is really good at that. Hope HRod will have the same results as Drew with his surgery and give us even more depth next year.

I have really liked C. Brown in the little time I have seen him but Perez must be very excited to hit the majors and what a big jump for him.

Instead of these guys actually trying out for the next year, they will be part of a team headed for post season play. I wonder if that puts a different light on what they think about.

I also wonder how they will keep LannEn sharp until his 3rd major league start. I realize Syr. has only a few games left but couldn't he have gone down to FLA. or is that season over as well?

Read Kilgore's article about Lannan's season in AAA and you'll realize why they're not punishing him further by making him go to Florida until Stras is shut down. He deserves the reward of being a big leaguer again for the whole month of September. He can throw bullpens or simulated games here to stay fresh until it's time for him to start again.

That was a great piece. Welcome home, John. And welcome to the other guys, too. :-)
