Game 53: Mets at Nats

Photo by Mark Zuckerman / NATS INSIDER
Jordan Zimmermann faces the red-hot Mets this evening at Nationals Park.
It's kind of becoming a broken record -- and we'll probably be saying this over and over again as the rest of the season plays out -- but the Nationals open a big series tonight. Their latest tough division opponent: the Mets, who weren't supposed to contend this season but have surprised and enter this series having won nine of 13 to draw within a half-game of the Nats and Marlins atop the NL East.

New York will send Chris Young to the mound for his first start in 13 months. The 6-foot-10 right-hander had surgery on his shoulder capsule, the same procedure Chien-Ming Wang and Johan Santana needed.

Jordan Zimmermann, meanwhile, starts for the Nationals, looking to bounce back from a less-than-spectacular outing last week in Miami.

7:05 p.m. -- And we're underway with a ball from Jordan Zimmermann to Kirk Nieuwenhuis. An unseasonably cool 69 degrees at gametime. And with all these clouds, doesn't look like we're going to get a chance to see the thrilling transit of Venus across the Sun. Dang.

7:11 p.m. -- Solid top of the first from Zimmermann, who struck out both Andres Torres and Lucas Duda on sliders. David Wright, of course, sent a two-out single to left. But it's not like any pitcher in the NL has been able to get Wright out so far this season. He entered the night hitting .361.

7:18 p.m. -- Not much happening for the Nats in the bottom of the first against Chris Young. A couple of flyballs to center from Steve Lombardozzi and Bryce Harper and then (shockingly) a groundball to short from Ryan Zimmerman, who has been doing a lot of that lately. Scoreless after one.

7:31 p.m. -- Hmm, the Nats have sent six batters to the plate so far against Young, who is firing up 85 mph fastballs in his first start in 13 months ... and they've all made outs. Adam LaRoche and Michael Morse even made outs on the first pitch they saw in the bottom of the second. At least Ian Desmond worked the count before flying out to right. Scoreless after two.

7:37 p.m. -- Zimmermann looks really sharp so far tonight. He's retired nine of 10 batters so far, four of them on strikeouts (two fastballs, two sliders). And the other five outs all came on groundballs. The only Met to get the ball out of infield was Wright on his first-inning single. Forty-one pitches, 27 strikes for Jordan.

7:49 p.m. -- Bryce Harper's .922 OPS just went up another few points, thanks to an RBI single to left in the bottom of the third. What a nice piece of hitting by the kid, fouling off a couple of pitches and them calmly sticking his bat out and poking a smooth single to left with two strikes and two outs. Impressive. The Nats take a 1-0 lead.

7:51 p.m. -- I failed to give some well-deserved props to Danny Espinosa for jump-starting that rally with a drag bunt and then a stolen base. That's the second straight game Espinosa has reached on a well-executed bunt. I'll tell you what: If he can make that a regular part of his game, he could add another key element to his whole package.

8:04 p.m. -- And there is Michael Morse's first hit of the season: a rope of a double to right-center. We saw a few of those last year, huh? Good sign for Morse, who had been 0-for-9 since coming off the DL. Nats still lead 1-0 after four.

8:12 p.m. -- Five scoreless innings in the books for Zimmermann, who has thrown an economic 64 pitches. He's only reached the eighth inning once in his career. Might he do it tonight?

8:33 p.m. -- The good news: Ryan Zimmerman finally came through with a clutch hit. With two outs and two strikes, he laced a single up the middle to bring home Zimmermann (who doubled). And then thanks to some defensive comedy from the Mets, Lombardozzi scored as well to make it 3-0. The bad news: Zimmermann gave two of the runs back in the top of the sixth on solo homers by Jordany Valdespin and David Wright. The Nats still lead 3-2, but that's not what Davey Johnson was looking for after his team took what looked like a comfortable, three-run lead.

8:44 p.m. -- And ... so much for Zimmermann reaching the eighth. He's pulled after six and only 81 pitches. Final line: 6 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 5 K, 2 HR. Tom Gorzelanny is in for the top of the seventh, protecting a 3-2 lead.

8:48 p.m. -- Nice job by Gorzelanny, retiring the side and striking out two. The guy doesn't get a whole lot of attention, but he's performed quite well in this role and served as an important bridge from the starters to the back of the bullpen. Still 3-2 as we reach the seventh-inning stretch.

8:55 p.m. -- Curious move to send up Rick Ankiel to pinch-hit and then have him bunt. Suffice it to say, it did not end well. Why not use Roger Bernadina (or even Edwin Jackson) for that task? Anyways, we go to the bottom of the eighth. Sean Burnett now in.

9:10 p.m. -- A rare implosion from Burnett and Craig Stammen, and it costs the Nats the lead (and perhaps the game). Burnett gave up a one-out double to Valdespin (where'd this guy come from?) so Davey Johnson brought in Stammen to face Scott Hairston. With the count 3-2, Stammen tried to sneak a curveball past Hairston, but it was a tad inside. So that left two on with one out for Andres Torress, with David Wright on deck. If ever Stammen had a double-play pitch in his bag of tricks, now was the time. Instead, Torres ripped a double to center, scoring two and putting the Mets ahead 4-3.

9:31 p.m. -- Big chance for Morse to show he's ready to face a big-time, big-league hurler as Terry Collins summons closer Frank Francisco with one out and Zimmerman on second base in the bottom of the eighth. Morse, though, tapped a weak grounder to third. Never fear, because Ian Desmond came to the rescue and delivered the game-tying, two-out, RBI single to right. It's 4-4 as we go to the ninth and Tyler Clippard enters.

9:40 p.m. -- Harper goes a loooong way to track down Valdespin's looper to right and quash a rally for the Mets, so we go to the bottom of the ninth in a tie game. It'll be Flores, Ankiel and a pinch-hitter (Nady?) due up.

9:42 p.m. -- Well, Harper had a chance to be the hero in the bottom of the ninth after Roger Bernadina sent a two-out single to left. And the kid smoked the ball to left field ... right at Vinny Rottino. So we go to the 10th, and coming in to pitch for the Nats ... Henry Rodriguez. First appearance in eight days. Gulp.

9:58 p.m. -- Well, that was kind of predictable, no? Rodriguez gives up a leadoff single to Hairston, lets him steal second and then watches him take third on a grounder. And then with Wright at the plate, a man on third and first base open ... he threw a pitch in the dirt that let the go-ahead run score. It's officially a wild pitch, but Jesus Flores needed to do a much better job to keep that ball in front of him. He tried to catch it without turning his glove over or using his body. Poor form there, and because of it, the Mets now lead 5-4.

10:22 p.m. -- What a wacky ballgame. Thanks in no small part to two Valdespin errors at shortstop, the Nats stormed back to tie this one in stunning fashion. Yet they couldn't win it because with the bases loaded and two outs, Ankiel turned a 3-0 count into an inning-ending strikeout. So we go to the 11th of what is now a 5-5 game, and Ross Detwiler is on the mound. He's the last man out of the pen, so he'll go until this one ends.

10:34 p.m. -- Detwiler does his job in the top of the 11th, recording three strikeouts (despite a two-out single and a walk). On to the bottom of the 11th, and here comes Elvin Ramirez to pitch for the Mets. You may remember him as the Nats' failed Rule 5 pick last year. Or maybe you don't.

10:47 p.m. -- Who wants to play 12 tonight? Evidently these two teams do after Ramirez struck out Harper, Zimmerman and LaRoche in succession to end the 11th. The final pitch to Zim, of course, was about 10 inches outside ... and Zim let umpire Mark Wegner know it. Livan Hernandez might be the only pitcher who's ever gotten a strike three call on a pitch further outside than that. Nevertheless, this game continues.

11:00 p.m. -- Uh-oh. Scott Hairston takes Detwiler deep on a 3-2 breaking ball to lead off the top of the 12th. This after Detwiler got ahead in the count 0-2. The Mets take a 6-5 lead and are once again three outs from winning this game and taking over first place in the division.

11:20 p.m. -- How about that? Morse and Desmond each double in the bottom of the 12th, as Desmond ties this game for the third time in five innings. Then Flores and Detwiler (?!) walk to load the bases for Xavier Nady. Who grounds into a fielder's choice. Setting the stage for Bryce Harper to win it on a base hit to left. Unbelievable. Final: 7-6 in 12. And the Nats are all alone in first place.

Kilgore-itis? Hope the boys are ready to go tonight? By the way, if you think Jordan doesn't get any run support -- Tim Lincecum has two wins this year - none since April 28th and Cliff Lee has ZERO wins this year. We can take this series but the 3-6 spots just HAVE to produce! GYFNG!!!

Mark must be furiously keeping up with the draft, using cut and paste.

He's allowed one error a year, however.

How many David Wrights do the Mets have, anyway? And what are David Wrights 1 through 4 doing tonight?

Who"d ever have thought there would be a key series involving the Nats ans Mets in June? Truthfully, for the next 3 weeks, every series is going to be a big one for the Nats.

With their fifth pick the Nats took a Clemson catcher named Kieboom.

Watching mlb ( almost constantly) and they are live from nats park but talking exclusively to the Met's radio guy ( ?). They were just discussing how difficult it's going to be for the Mets to have to go through the Nats (!!!) interesting perspective. They are so relieved to miss Stras and Gio - as well they should be. Rauch not available, Miss Iowa expected. I should have realized that their fans are terrified to come here as the first leg of 9 games on the road - if you can call playing in the Bronx the road, of course. David Wright brings out Giancarlo -like anxiety in me.

Boy, I'm having a bang-up day, huh? Sorry for the typos. I was scrambling to get the game thread posted before running down to the Nats clubhouse to get a whole bunch of pregame updates. Obviously I should've stuck around up here for another minute to proofread things first...

You're forgiven, Mark. Three days with no game out of the last five, and then there's that draft thingy they throw at you, you can be excused for not knowing which end is up....I sure as heck don't :)

Mark, anything that's no big deal and worth a little chuckle is fine among friends...

on the LOL front, when you have a moment, you might also want to fix the URL, which still reads "game-53-mets-at-braves".

What we all really hope is that the Mets have been scouting the wrong team and this completely throws off their game plan -- "Aren't they pitching Brian Beachy tonight?"

No worries, Mark. We know there's a lot going on today. Heck, you so rarely have any typos, despite your prodigious output, that I guess we all got excited about sharpening our virtual red pencils. :-)

baseballswami said...

You still have many, many fewer errors than Starlin Castro, Mark. Mitch Williams giving Jordan tons of love on mlb. Even they are startled by his stats vs wins vs run support. sheesh. Go Nats!!!!!!! I hear the Mets bullpen is a bit shaky and this is the pitchers first start. Maybe knock him out nice and early? Maybe not make him look like Cy Young?

Gonat said...

Jordan Zimmermann has had ownage on David Wright when they have faced each other.

baseballswami said...

Holding him to a single and stranding him is a success in my book.

Gonat said...

JZim throwing 94 and Chris Young throwing 84 on their fastballs.

Gonat said...

Another groundout for Zim. Luckily no doubleplay.

baseballswami said...

Recent trends continues -- the opposing hitters are tougher outs, use up more of our starters' pitches. Our hitters come up and get out on just a few pitches. I would love to see our hitters give the opposing pitcher a harder time instead of making it easy on him. Zim just looks so bad - obviously it's not a rest issue because they have had games off.

Gonat said...

baseballswami, the Nats are swinging early in the counts. 3 of the 7 Mets swung at the 1st pitch.

Gonat said...

Case and point. 1 pitch, 1 out for LaRoche. 1 pitch and 1 out for Morse. Shaking my head.

This pitcher is making his 1st start. WORK HIM. This is not professional hitting.

SFNats said...

Agree, Gonat. This is Young's first start back in over a year of being hurt. Make him work and run up the pitch count.

baseballswami said...

WOULD IT KILL YOU TO TAKE A PITCH????? Desi finally did - but why are they making this slow-thrower in his debut look like Nolan Ryan???

SFNats said...

Hopefully, they're just getting the timing of his Livo-esque fastball so they can crush it the second time around.

Gonat said...

Flores gets the hitters pitch in his hot zone and pops it up to 1st base.

Come on boys!

Gonat said...

Leave it to the pitcher to get a hit. LOL

Gonat said...

And Lombardozzi doesn't get the job done. What does it take?

Gonat said...

Does Young pitch around Bryce to get to Zim? Last time that happened in this exact situation, Zim hit a 2 run double

Gonat said...

Look who gets it done. BRYCE HARPER. Youngest kid on the field.

TheNatsMovement said...

We are lacking in the elite offense category. We should have gotten 2 or 3 runs in that inning, we had him shook. Last year we couldnt get the one run, this year we can get the one run, but we need to scoop up 3 in an opportunity like that presents itself.

baseballswami said...

Who got that done? Espi - young, Jordan - pitcher, and Harper - rookie. Uh, hello? Veterans? Are you there? Poor Jordan - just taking matters into his own hands again. Can't blame him.

Go Nats and keep it up Jordan.

If that was the case he would be in trouble in the 4th. JZim's slider disappears after 70 pitches. The rest of the pitches looked good.

This is a must Win so glad they pulled him with 3 straight lefties batting.

Wow, Flores gives a stare back at Bautista after 2 very inside pitches.

Gonat said...

Ankiel can't even bunt. Just shaking my head.

peric said...

They started too fast ... ALL oF THEM. They were all into who was going to win the CY Young in April ... and now they're tired ... and its only June.

I really didn't think Detwiler was pitching all that badly. I'm sure I'll see all sorts of screaming and yelling, surely the kind Michelle hates, when Wang implodes. He isn't as good as Detwiler right now. In fact I think Gorzelanny is better. I don't think Wang will be able to go 6 innings consistently every five starts.

IN any case we had four bad starts by a guy who just needs his worse stuff to throw a 1 hitter: Strasburg. Gio just took a short 4 inning or so start. Uhmm who's left? I guess we remember EJax imploding ... and pitching a
complete game.

The need to find a rhythm as they start thinking about the long haul. The problem is only Gio, EJax, and now Wang have had that experience. I'd much rather see Detwiler getting this experience over Wang but I guess bringing Wang back was Davey's idea so he has to put his money where his mouth is even if its the wrong move.

SCNatsFan said...

I fear we have seen the best Ankiel has to offer and as his ABs get fewer and fewer his numbers will continue to drop

Gonat said...

Anibel Sanchez night ends with 7 earned runs!

We better come back and win this, as this become a theme the last week and 2 days. Again leading going into the middle to late innings. The pitching staff just has to match the other team from then on as we are leading, and the previous 4 losses they didn't, and if we lose this it will 5 straight game that this would happen. the one win would be when the pitchers Satruday pitched well enough to ahve 2 runs stand.

We can still win this, but I simply don't understand this real bad habit the pitchers have developed. Up 3 this time before they decided to take the night off.

I was in the car when Torres got his double, Charley Schlows made it sound like ANkiel was out of position. haven't seen replay since I got home, was he to far toward leftcenter like he said.

What was the deal with Stammen and the nibbling with Hairston, Scholes siad he seemed to not want to pitch him a strike. (since he was alked and the 4th run, I was wondering).

Swinging strike 1 in the dirt on 1st pitch to Ankiel. Actually takes 2nd and 3rd pitches for a ball. If Rick wouldn't swing he would be ahead 3-0 now. Swings and fouls a ball left up that could have been the Walk-Off. Of course strikes out on 3-2

I hate this lineup. I truly do.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

When DeRosa is coming back is taking Ankiel's spot. He K's too much, From 309 to a K. the second strike might have been a ball and was worth taking. Not sure what poccessed Davey to allow him to swing.

Will said...

Rick Ankiel's pitching gave him a nervous breakdown. Rick Ankiel's hitting will give ME a nervous breakdown.

mick said...

I am so sick of these pathetic wimpy hitters players on this team. Ankiel and Espi are all part of a culture of losing.

Eckstein you area joke and the worst excuse of a coach i have ever seen!!!

mick said...

Gonat.... this what eckstein teaches... He SUCKS!!!

Will said...

I don't know what is going on with MLB Gameday right now, but HRod is apparently 6-2 on Murphy...

Exposremains said...

I wonder how many Ks combined Espinosa and Ankiel have in big spots. 3 errors and a walk in one inning and you score one run.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

WHo is working with these two strike out kings to cut the crap out. They are not home run hitters why are striking out so much. Who is allowing it?

mick said...

3-0 count, bases loaded at home and this pussy strikeouts!

SCNatsFan said...

Sorry to keep harping on it but Espinosa is not a major league hitter unless we want a 220 hitter who cannot make reliable contact. I'm amazed he swings and misses as often as he does.

Ankiel, well, its what you have come to expect. He should have bunted to SS who was trying to give us the game.

Gonat said...

When you see Espi and Ankiel coming up, how many of us were hoping Strasburg would Pinch Hit?

Nats Fan in Brazil said...

Could corey brown do worst than that? brown over ankiel any given day

mick said...

Espinoza is not prime time, he is a wimp!!!!

I don't think I want to listen to Davey's voice after this one, he needs to fore Eckstein and he needs to bench some of the garbage in this line up

SCNatsFan said...

Gonat, I'm really rooting for Danny but after his quick start he looks so overmatched. I don't know what Lombo has to do to get the regular nod and see if Espi can get some consistency getting regular ABs at AAA.

mick said...

exactly, what does Lombo have to do?????

mick said...

I am done with Danny and Hrod and soon i may be done with Davey

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Det gets the first two guys out then starts pitching balls. What on earth is that about.

Gonat said...

SCNatsFan, Danny is swinging better in the low leverage situations and same with Ankiel. Just don't get it.

mick said...

come on Ross

Gonat said...

Several of us have said it, Lombo to 2nd and Danny to the bench. Bring back Corey Brown to CF, Bryce to RF and Morse back to LF

Exposremains said...

Detwiler doing in one inning what he usually does over a game.

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

quit nibbling

Gonat said...

Thank the Lord! Detwiler makes it interesting and gets it done!!!

mick said...

you think we can get 1 freakin run?

Nats Fan in Brazil said...

Mick you realy think we would be better without davey? I mean look the nats before him and after him..

Manassas Nats' Fan said...

Now win it dog gone it.

mick said...

is laroche a joke too

SCNatsFan said...

I don't think the bench does anything for Danny; get him somewhere to get lots of ABs. Get himsome confidence.

SCNatsFan said...

Here here Manassas. Now that Tosh.0 is over I'm ready to go to bed.

mick said...

Nats212.. I have not given up on him yet, I said I close

Gonat said...

Heart of the Order for the Nats needs to come through right here!!!!

Gonat said...

Even though the ump called a strike, there wasn't 1 strike thrown to Bryce.

Will said...

UGHHHH Bad Harp is back.

mick said...

here comes a DP from the King of the DP's Zim

Gonat said...

Someone move Zim 2 inches closer to the plate.

mick said...

Heart of the order has NO HEART

Gonat said...

Time for LaRoche to do what he did in Chicago

mick said...

Zim is so over rated, LaRoche just sucks

phil dunton said...

nats offense is pathetic.

Gonat said...

I didn't mean Game 1 in Chicago, was hoping for Game 2. I should have been more specific.

Will said...

Anyone still happy we didn't get Prince?

Will said...

I believe Wright is due up next inning, so that was our chance.

Nats Fan in Brazil said...

How can a player cool down so fast? i mean laroche was our early beast and now he looks ankiel!

Gonat said...

Ramirez throws 4 straight balls to Nady for a walk. Davey has to tell Young Bryce, be very patient.

Cameron said...

Larouche is back to his normal self.

phil dunton said...

It seems like David Wright bats every inning. I have a bad feeling about his next at bat.

Exposremains said...

umpire wants to play for a while. What happened to Laroche? I think he got the Nats disease. Every time a Nats player is doing good and people start talking about him, he completely loses it and start sucking.

Cameron said...

Great game Natinals, great game!

rogieshan said...

Johnson manages the offense like he's in the American League.

Is LaRoche fatigued or is he playing hurt?

Why do we always get beat by a Hairston?

I'm putting myself on the 15 day DL, y'all. I can't take this team.

Exposremains said...

FP is right the Mets do all the little things right on offense. That's the complete opposite of Nats. So doing the little things right is as good as having a great rotation.

This has been discussed for about 3 weeks now on here. Many of us think he has lost some bat speed.

Put Morse on first base and sit Laroche.
